Russian Jet Does a Barrel Roll Over U.S. Recon Plane in the Baltic

    https://pjmedia.com/trending/2016/04...in-the-baltic/

Some smart-ass Russian pilot decided to channel Tom Cruise in Top Gun and perform a barrel roll over a U.S. reconnaissance plane in international waters. The incident was the second such provocation against the American military in the last few days. On Thursday, Russian jets buzzed the USS Donald Cook destroyer, flying 30 feet above its deck.

    CNN:

The incident Thursday occurred when a Russian jet "performed erratic and aggressive maneuvers" as it flew within 50 feet of the U.S. aircraft's wing tip, Danny Hernandez, a spokesman for U.S. European Command, said in a response to a question from CNN.
The Russian Su-27 began the barrel roll from the left side of the U.S. RC-135 and went over the top of it to end on the right side of the aircraft, European Command said.

The RC-135 aircraft was "intercepted by a Russian SU-27 in an unsafe and unprofessional manner," Hernandez said, adding that the U.S. plane never entered Russian territory.

"The unsafe and unprofessional actions of a single pilot have the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions between countries," said Hernandez, who added the United States is protesting with the Russian government.

But Russia's Defense Ministry said that reports on Thursday's incident were "not consistent with reality" and that the Russian aircraft's maneuvers had been "performed strictly in accordance with the international regulations on the use of airspace."

Ministry spokesman Gen. Igor Konashenkov said the Su-27 had been dispatched after Russian air defense facilities spotted an unknown target over the Baltic Sea, approaching the Russian border at high speed.

It identified the jet as an American reconnaissance aircraft, and after visual contact, the U.S. plane "changed its course to the opposite direction, away from the Russian border," he said.

No incidents were recorded over the encounter, he said.

That seemed like a friendly enough greeting towards guests flying the RC-135.

I wonder if the approach was detected prior to the visitor's evasive maneuver?
(that might explain the cranky tone of the written response contained in the OP)

Since these aircraft don't have turn signals, it might be a good idea to give it a little
wing wobble before changing lanes, especially if there's only about 15 meters of clearance
    between them.

This was pushed on nearly every media source yesterday. Hysteria from the war propagandists. So ridiculous when the talking heads are are "discussing" it with their typical expressions of concern and seriousness. "Oh my, that is terribly aggressive." "Yes, this is the most provocation from the Russians since the cold war." "This naked aggression from Putin must not stand."

Bring out Lindsey Graham, Bill Kristol and John McCain! Their panties are waded tight and soaked in Ben-Gay about now...

Top speed for the RC- 135 is 933 kph- 580 mph (link with photo). A Boeing 767 cruising speed is (533 mph or 858 km/h)- pretty close to that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_767

Nice trivia there. And what's your point?

Found this interesting thread on DU. I think zippy would like this.

OK, I buzzed a Russian Navy "trawler", several times, back in the late 60s. Big deal.

I was a pilot in the Alabama Air National Guard.
We were flying the RF-84/F, a reconnaissance/fighter aircraft.

(The 'bomb-like' things under the belly are 450 gallon external fuel tanks. There were two.)

My squadron, out of Birmingham, Alabama, was part of a joint all-military branches combat exercise (war game) namd "Clove Hitch" in the late 60s staged out of Ramey AFB in Puerto Rico.

My squadron mate and I were scheduled for the 'dawn patrol' (06:00 departure) to take photos of some bridge or something, but our briefing officer told us that mission was scrubbed. Instead we were to 'harass' a Russian Navy 'trawler' (spy ship) just off the coast. We all knew they were monitoring our activities, radio transmissions, etc. It was the height of the cold war.

Woo Hoo! A license to buzz!

We were given the latest position of the trawler.
Dan and I flipped a coin and he flew lead, I flew wing.
We took off and climbed to 10,000' and hit the last known position of the Russkies.
    Dan soon sighted them.

"I'll make the first pass across their deck. Count to 5 and come on in."
I was on Dan's right wing and he peeled left.
I counted to 5 and followed.
    I saw the ship.
I saw Dan blast over the bow deck and pull up.
Just as I was approaching for my run, Dan said "PULL UP! WRONG SHIP!"
I pulled up and rolled inverted and looked down as I passed over and sure enough, it was a cruise ship.
    Woops.

A few minutes later Dan found the Russian ship and we pressed on.
He made the first pass at deck level.
I made my first pass about 10' above the midships deck using color motion picture film in my forward film bay.
It was the first and only time I had ever been loaded with either color or motion picture fan.***

Dan's first pass still photos showed many sailors looking up.
My first movie film showed guys diving down and closing hatches.
We beat the ship up, low pass after low pass, for about an hour and then returned to Ramey.

At our farewell banquet at the Ramey Officers Club I was awarded the "Order of the Russian Trawler".
I have the certificate to prove it.

***I asked for a copy of the film. I was told:
    1. It was not available.
    2. Your security clearance doesn't go that high.
    3. Finally "What film?"
OK, I think I made a movie for the CIA.

Does anyone think to question why the US was flying a RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft (aka SPY PLANE) along Russia's coast?
    What was the objective?
Is it not aggressive to go flying spy planes along the borders of another country.

So the US is upset that's its aggressive act of sending spy planes off Russia's coast is met with a completely predictable and logical defensive response.
Were Russia and China flying spy planes along the US coast do you not think US would great them with jet escort - perhaps doing barrel rolls over them to shooo them away?

It has been some time since the last world war. Russia does need the occasional reminder who's in charge.

Same thing happened in January: http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/29/politi...nes-intercept/

A Russian fighter jet came within 15 feet of a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance plane over the Black Sea this week in what the Pentagon is calling an "unsafe" incident, U.S. officials say.

"On January 25, 2016, a U.S. RC-135U flying a routine route in international airspace over the Black Sea was intercepted by a Russian Su-27 in an unsafe and unprofessional manner. We are looking into this particular incident," said a statement from Army Lt. Col. Michelle L. Baldanza, a Defense Department spokesperson.
Another U.S. military official told CNN that the Russian jet flew along the right side the U.S. plane then turned away in a maneuver that had an adverse impact on the "controllability of the U.S. aircraft." The official did not know if the Russian aircraft was armed at the time. The official said the incident occurred more than 40 miles from the Russian coast.

The U.S. official said Russian intercepts happen routinely and the majority are conducted safely.

But Monday's encounter is similar to one between the same two types of U.S. and Russian aircraft in 2014.

In that incident, a Russian Su-27 flew within 100 feet of the nose of the U.S. Air Force RC-135U over the Sea of Okhotsk between Russia and Japan, a Defense Department official said.

At the time, the U.S. official called it "one of the most dangerous close passes in decades" and said the Russian jet "put the lives of the U.S. crew in jeopardy."
The Russian aircraft turned and "showed its belly" to the U.S. crew so they could see it was armed with missiles.

    Yes, same thing Zippy.

A US ship was in the Russian equivalent of the Chesapeake.

Their reaction was predictable and defensive.

If the US government wants to fight a war of aggression against Russia, well okay, but let's be honest about who's the aggressor.

Another Spy Plane; Another Barrel Roll

Washington complains again that its spy plane flying the Russian border is "harassed".

Another Washington Spy plane flying along the Russian border is intercepted with flyby and barrel roll.

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-0...ed-russian-jet

Of note, Washington's spy plane had its transponder turned off, which identifies the plane.

Russian response to Washington's flying spy planes along its borders - "either not to fly near our borders or to turn the transponder on for identification."

Dang Russian aggression, placing its borders under Washington's spy planes. When will Russia stop forcing Washington to fly its spy planes along Russia's borders.

Russians 'barrel roll' over another U.S. Air Force plane

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/29/politi...r-force-plane/

    Fri April 29, 2016

Washington (CNN)A Russian SU-27 conducted a "barrel roll" Friday over the top of a U.S. Air Force RC-135 which was flying a reconnaissance mission in international airspace above the Baltic Sea, the Defense Department said.

The Russian SU-27 approached alongside within 25 feet of the U.S. aircraft and then flew inverted over the top of the plane to the other side, Lt. Col. Michelle L. Baldanza, a U.S. Army spokesperson, said in a statement.

"The SU-27 intercepted the U.S. aircraft flying a routine route at high rate of speed from the side then proceeded to perform an aggressive maneuver that posed a threat to the safety of the U.S. aircrew in the RC-135," Baldanza said.

The U.S. considers this a very unsafe aerial maneuver and is expected to voice its concerns to the Russians, a U.S. defense official told CNN.

This is the second barrel roll maneuver over a U.S. aircraft by the Russians this month. On April 14, a Russian jet "performed erratic and aggressive maneuvers" as it flew within 50 feet of a U.S. aircraft's wing tip, Danny Hernandez, a spokesman for U.S. European Command, said in a response to a question from CNN.

In that incident, an RC-135 aircraft also was intercepted by a Russian SU-27. The Russian SU-27 began the barrel roll from the left side of the U.S. RC-135 and went over the top of it to end on the right side of the aircraft, U.S. European Command said.
This also comes after two encounters earlier this month in the Baltic Sea between the Navy missile destroyer USS Donald Cook and two Russian jets. In one of those incidents, a Russian jet flew within 75 feet of the ship.
