    Medical incompetence, another story

This is a recent story about a friend of a friend. She is approximately 60 yo. She had a bowel blockage, and was taken in for emergency surgery. They removed several feet of colon, said that it was cancer tumors, and that she also had stage 4 ovarian cancer. They drugged her up, and told her she had 2 days to live. Being medically trained herself (almost nurse level), she started to question their "treatment" after 2 days passed. They had convinced her she was a goner. Her first questions were about the heavy drugs they were giving her. She is very small, and suspected that they were giving her way too much. She convinced them to send her home on hospice, which they obliged. Once home, she kicked out hospice and stopped all drugs. It took over a week, but now she feels much better. She is healing from the surgery, and has very little pain, all pain is related to the surgery and excess bandaging they put on her. She cleans and bandages herself now. She can walk around, and take care of herself. Two days indeed.

Bottom line: Their remedy was essentially euthanasia. And don't think for a second that it is an unusual situation.

I don't doubt it for a minute. Any word on a second opinion for her cancer?

Not unusual at all. I am hearing this type scenario more and more and I even witnessed it with my own eyes.

I am glad she was able to figure it out before they did her in.

    I'm with you.

But....she was having blockage from tumors? And they also found it in her ovaries? If that is so....and like I said, I'm with you....the two days thing was obviously wrong...but if they verified she is ate with cancer that progressed.....well...you know.

Sady, if the cancer is there like that....there is no telling where else it is they didn't poke around.

Second opinion is this week, I believe. They didn't want to give her one.

Latest update. No second opinion scheduled. They are refusing to schedule one. She tried going to the Emergency room hoping to see a specialist, no go, they wouldn't do it. They are hoping their "2 days to live" diagnosis won't last more than a few months. They are trying to out-wait her.

Get their prognosis in writing. Get the physician names and who saw her and when. Get them on-record, or it simply did not happen.

As for "them" not scheduling a second opinion, there is always someone to see.
Genuine, willful, aggressive ignorance is the one sure way to tick me off. I wish I could say you were trolling. I know better, and it's just sad.

I'm with Melissa, she needs to go somewhere else and take a copy of her records.

I get this second-hand, so I don't talk to the patient, but it appears that she did just that and got her medical records. Apparently it was very difficult and they resisted, but she has knowledge of medicine and the law, so they couldn't hold her off.

By looking at the records, she found that the pathologist for the colon tumors rated her stage 3, and recommended additional hysterectomy-ovary removal. It was certainly not "2 days to live" and go die in hospice as was first told to her.

She now has an appointment with an Oncologist, and the Doctor she is talking to now (don't know if it is the same "2 days to live" Doctor) is being extremely nice, even offering to act as her "advocate".

    Final update:

She lasted 3 months after being told she had two days to live. If she had stayed in hospice as they wanted, they would have killed her within a week via morphine overdose.

She had her medical records, and was planning on going to a specialist in another State, but unfortunately did not make it long enough. During that three months, she was well enough to clean out her house, and sell it. She drove halfway across the country by herself and moved to a new house.

While she had plenty of energy for all of that, there is some evidence that major moves like that while battling cancer decrease your survival odds, but it is unknown if she would have survived by staying put and finding competent treatment.

Moral of the story: don't take any diagnosis and treatment recommendation at face value. Get a second opinion, especially when it is a critical condition. You are your own advocate.

    RIP

I'm glad she kept living. I imagine it's tough to keep going after being handed a death sentence.

I am glad she did what she did. She accomplished much more by using her instincts.

Found out a key detail yesterday. One reason she had trouble getting further treatment was that she had no health insurance. She lost her insurance when Obamacare went into effect, and the cost doubled for her to get new insurance under Obamacare, so she had none. She was an independent contractor.

"No insurance? We'll just go ahead and euthanize you now."

    It's a double edged sword.

"Great insurance! We'll just drag you along until your body can't take it anymore."

I am seeing this with my own eyes right now to a judge who has great insurance and was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer. If they refuse treatment, they cannot get any treatment anywhere else and their great insurance will be dropped.

That's their favorite threat. "Do what we say or you will lose coverage." They like to tell seniors that Medicare will not pay for things if they don't do exactly what they say, usually involving being virtual prisoners in rest homes until the highest paying coverage runs out. Then it's GTFO.
