Congressman moves to block porn on federal computers

Rep. Walter Jones, a North Carolina Republican, is leading a crusade to stop federal employees from watching and downloading porn on government equipment while at work.

“We are over $19 trillion in debt, and taxpayers are paying for federal employees to waste time at work surfing porn,” Jones said in a press release. “This is a well-documented, government-wide problem. It’s time to put a stop to it.”

Jones sent a letter to House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers asking that future appropriations bills include language ensuring that computer networks funded by the government block the viewing, downloading and exchanging of porn.
Porn watching at government agencies has been an issue at the Environmental Protection Agency, where last year the Inspector General revealed in a report that two employees earning $120,000 a year watched porn on the job. They were put on administrative leave for nearly a year before anyone tried to fire them.

Similarly, in 2014, an EPA employee admitted to watching between two and six hours of porn a day at work and downloading 7,000 files of porn on a government computer.

House Appropriations Chair Silent On Feds Watching Porn

House Committee on Appropriations Chairman Harold Rogers isn’t saying if he will support a proposed spending amendment to make it illegal for all federal employees to view pornography on the Internet using government computers.

Rep. Walter Jones asked the Kentucky Republican in a March 17 letter to include language in all future appropriations bills that forces federal agencies to block access to porn on government computer networks.

“We are over $19 trillion in debt, and taxpayers are paying for federal employees to waste time at work surfing porn,” the North Carolina Republican said in a statement. “This is a well-documented, government-wide problem. It’s time to put a stop to it. My solution is simple and I urge all of my colleagues to join me in blocking employees at all federal agencies from viewing porn on the job.”

Rogers has yet to respond. He has been chairman of the spending panel since 2011 and is in his 18th term in Congress.

JONES SECURES LANGUAGE TO BLOCK FEDS FROM SURFING PORN ON TAXPAYER DIME

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) thanked House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers (KY-5) for acting on Jones’ March 17 request to include language in federal spending bills to ensure that computer networks in federal agencies block the viewing, downloading, and exchanging of pornography. Eight of the nine spending bills introduced so far this year have included the language requested by Jones. Only four of last year’s spending bills included the language.

“We are over $19 trillion in debt, and taxpayers are paying for federal employees to waste time at work surfing porn. This is a well-documented, government-wide problem. It’s time to put a stop to it, and I am grateful for Chairman Rogers’ assistance in support of that cause,” said Congressman Jones.
