Insightful analysis only confirms intelligence, not ideology. Machiavelli was a rabid Republican but is best remembered for his strategic insight concerning a form of strong man government he held in no particular regard.
If you lack the capacity to correctly analyze the world around you, then your ideology is irrelevant as you'd never be able to implement it anyway.
He would only put down the best protests. All of our protests these days (in the US) are lame, so there wouldn't be an issue.
How Jackie Chan Became The Most Hated Celeb On The Chinese Internet
Aug. 10, 2013, at 12:36 a.m.
On Saturday, Jackie Chan received 6,400 comments on Weibo for praising Beijing’s blue skies.

On the subject of freedom and democracy in the Chinese-speaking world, he said in 2009:

To be fair, Chan was mostly speaking about the lack of regulation over food safety and media piracy. But in a country where stealing more than $3,000 worth of property can put you on death row, and where the law doles out harsh punishment against ethnic minorities and political dissidents, Chinese netizens were having none of it.

BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky – Washington liberals are trying to push through the so-called DREAM Act, which creates an official path to Democrat voter registration for 2 million college-age illegal immigrants.

I havent forgotten the quote, which also says that Gorbechev did not have a firm enough hand. It sounds to me that it is not dispassionate analysis, but rather, analysis from a man with a perspective which values authoritarianism. As such, it is very troubling still.
I would also like to note that although Machiavelli was a republican in the discourses on livy, when he wrote the Prince apparently he did it with an eye towards moving up into the ranks of the powered classes again. So while his analysis in both works is useful, he was not exactly a principled man.
Dammit I know Trump has a lot of flaws. I don't like most of the people he has appointed to his cabinet. But I still know that he is not Hillary. I think our country is between a rock and a hard place and has been for a while. I think guns would be gone had Hillary been elected except for the order followers. What would she have done to people like us here at RPFs? I don't pretend to know what will happen with Trump but I am pretty sure any dem POTUS will start working to ban guns and free speech and raise taxes out of site. I try to keep my imagination at bay cause I just don't know what the facts are about anything these days. I don't know why Trump said what he said about Tienanmen Square and Russia in the 90's Playboy interview and I don't know if his view on it has changed either. I know he could be a total Trojan Horse selected to pull the wool over the eyes of the real resistance. At least he claims to have respect for life and is trying to put the brakes on after birth abortion of course I know he could just be pandering to keep us sedated. I just want my grand children to have a chance of living in some semblance of freedom and peace.
