If they were going to stand there, they might as well bend over.

    That's so sad.

I like how the guy speaking says, "us" when he really is not including the people he is addressing.

This is progress according to the National Review Online. Have them move to the IT field.

LOL - yeah, then they can lose jobs to workers who are imported.

From an economic standpoint, cheaper labor means the company can offer cheaper units more competitively. But still...it hurts.

Heh - I remember the days when the union thugs would have run that guy off the stage, set his car on fire and shut the plant down immediately.

Instead of fighting the beast that enforces corporate taxation & union excess, they move overseas.

Absolutely. Especially now that the Consumer Protection Bureau or whatever has taken shakedowns to a new level, why anybody would choose to start a manufacturing business here escapes me.

Wow, I hope the company gives their employees help on the expenses of relocating their families to Mexico.

With a name like Carrier, that makes sense.

Here we see how disastrous trade policies in this country are. Gotta give credit where credit is due though, it was good of the company to give them over a year's notice. That should give people enough time to either find another job in their area or relocate somewhere else.

I've worked in Union and non union jobs. Union jobs are, by far, safer, higher paying, and have better benefits. I'm making about $106,000 at my union job this year.

It wasn't the EPA. I know it's popular to hate on them in these parts but in this case it's the Department of Energy. They enacted higher efficiency standards for motors to weed out the less efficient systems. Not saying that that is necessarily a good or bad thing, but I just wanted to clarify that the EPA had nothing to do with this, and it was in fact a cabinet level agency.

So moving to Mexico will fix that problem?

In general there are three main sources of high paying jobs. Government. Banks/ finance, and union. Rise and fall of unions has mirrored the rise and fall of the Middle Class.

No. The regulations are on systems being installed, not manufactured. They're moving to Mexico to cut down on labor costs.

I thought the high paying jobs were those in the government; not having to produce anything that requires voluntarism or non-aggression seems to be the way to go.

Government jobs usually have a pretty $#@!ty payscale unless you're an elected official or have a degree in something that would net you more in the private sector, like accounting or engineering.

    Doing what?
There is literally no place in West Virginia where you can't be the sole breadwinner of a family of 6 and still live like royalty off that.
    It's frankly ridiculous.

I work with people who have incredibly specific IT skills on top of master's degrees, who are working in the private sector in the wealthiest per-capita county in the whole country, and they're not making $106k.

I don't know what you do, but if it's a union job, it's the functional equivalent of digging ditches compared to what people here are getting paid less for, and it's ridiculous. Not silly... but literally worthy of ridicule.
There are no crimes against people.
There are only crimes against the state.
And the state will never, ever choose to hold accountable its agents, because a thing can not commit a crime against itself.

Working at a chemical plant. We get a $1 raise for every year we are there on our anniversary month, plus an 8% raise every May for the length of the contract. This particular contract runs until 2019.

The difference being, of course, that the unions aren't college educated, not specialists in any given trade, and therefore are not worth the premium they demand. Which is why their jobs are moving to Mexico.
