AUSTIN – Ted Cruz has plucked the backing of Rand Paul’s Texas chairman, now that the Kentucky senator has dropped out of the GOP presidential race in the wake of a dismal Iowa performance.State Sen. Don Huffines, R-Dallas, on Wednesday threw his support behind Cruz ahead of Texas’ March primary, a Huffines spokesman confirmed. He had been among Paul’s biggest Texas boosters, even attending a GOP debate last year to back the senator.
Huffines said in a written statement that he is “thrilled by the momentum Senator Cruz is gaining.”
“Ted Cruz will secure the border and fight daily to restore liberty and freedom, which is what our nation needs most at this critical juncture in our history,” he said, calling Cruz a “courageous, constitutional conservative.”
The switch is likely just one piece of the Republicans’ endorsement shuffle, as Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee have now also dropped their White House bids. And following Cruz’s historic Iowa win, the Texan could be primed to gather more steam.
The Texas Tribune reported, for instance, that Cruz also picked up support on Wednesday from Rep. Jonathan Stickland, a Bedford Republican who had shown support for Paul.
And Huffines’ support for Cruz – first reported by the Texas Tribune – isn’t really a surprise. Though Huffines has deep ties to the Paul family, his political rise was fueled by many of the same tea party supporters who pushed Cruz to prominence.
“We are very honored to have his support and grateful for his help to secure the GOP nomination for Ted Cruz,” Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said in a written statement.
