    It remains fairly common for people to believe they are choosing the ‘healthier’ option when reaching for a diet soda instead of the regular one, but research has been surfacing over the past few years which suggests consuming artificial sweeteners might not be the best idea either. Of course, this does not mean that we should return to regular sodas instead, as the amount of sugar found in these drinks is literally deadly; sugar represents a major contributing factor in the prevalence of multiple chronic diseases which continue to plague the Western population.

    Non-caloric artificial sweeteners (NAS) are the most widely used food additives in the world, and they are considered safe despite the concerns that have been raised by multiple studies.

    Last year, a strong case was made by a team of scientists in Israel, who concluded that ingesting artificial sweeteners might lead to obesity and multiple ailments that are related to obesity, like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, gout, and some cancers.

    The study noted the obesity link in animal models (mice), and it was not the first to to find evidence that, as Scientific American, “the sweeteners appear to change the population of intestinal bacteria that direct metabolism, the conversion of food to energy or stored fuel. And this result suggests the connection might also exist in humans.” (source)

    Those are not part of the study. According to their charts at the link, they only tested with saccharin. They are listed under "references" but we do not know what part of those publications were cited. We also cannot see their actual results since no data is included (unless you want to pay $200) and the images provided are too small to read.

    Abstract


    Non-caloric artificial sweeteners (NAS) are among the most widely used food additives worldwide, regularly consumed by lean and obese individuals alike. NAS consumption is considered safe and beneficial owing to their low caloric content, yet supporting scientific data remain sparse and controversial. Here we demonstrate that consumption of commonly used NAS formulations drives the development of glucose intolerance through induction of compositional and functional alterations to the intestinal microbiota. These NAS-mediated deleterious metabolic effects are abrogated by antibiotic treatment, and are fully transferrable to germ-free mice upon faecal transplantation of microbiota configurations from NAS-consuming mice, or of microbiota anaerobically incubated in the presence of NAS. We identify NAS-altered microbial metabolic pathways that are linked to host susceptibility to metabolic disease, and demonstrate similar NAS-induced dysbiosis and glucose intolerance in healthy human subjects.     gave free-living, normal-weight subjects 1 150 g soda sweetened
    with aspartame (APM) or high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) per
    day. Relative to when no soda was given, drinking APM-sweetened
    soda for 3 wk significantly reduced calorie intake of both
    females (n = 9) and males (n = 2 1) and decreased the body
    weight of males but not of females.
    However, drinking HFCSsweetened
    soda for 3 wk significantly increased the calorie intake
    and body weight of both sexes. Ingesting either type of
    soda reduced intake of sugar from the diet without affecting

    Aspartamine did not lead to increased obesity. High fructose corn syrup did. Study did not look at any other health risks from either sweetener but only at changes in body weight. Nothing about "metabolic disease", heart disease, diabetes, etc.

    Abstract
    Twelve normal subjects and 10 subjects with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus were given, in random order at intervals of greater than or equal to 1 wk, three drinks of the same beverage: one unsweetened, one sweetened with 400 mg aspartame, and one sweetened with 135 mg saccharin. The amount of sweetener approximated that in 1 L of sugar-free soft drink. Plasma glucose, insulin, and glucagon were measured for 3 h after ingestion of the test beverage. Plasma glucose declined slightly throughout the test period, probably due to fasting, with no differences between the three treatments. Neither sweetener affected peak insulin levels in subjects with or without diabetes. Analysis of area under the curve showed that mean insulin levels were statistically significantly higher after aspartame than after saccharin or unsweetened beverage in normal subjects only, but the magnitude of the difference was small and unlikely to be of physiological importance in the absence of differences in glucose levels. Furthermore, the differences could largely be accounted for by a decrease in insulin values after both unsweetened beverage and saccharin, with no change from baseline after aspartame. Glucagon levels showed time-to-time variation but no overall differences. We conclude that ingestion of aspartame- or saccharin-sweetened beverages by fasting subjects, with or without diabetes, did not affect blood glucose homeostasis.

    How much aspartame are you consuming in your daily life? Are you getting symptoms of aspartame poisoning?

    Aspartame is marketed as a diet product, but it is not a diet product at all. In fact, it will cause you to GAIN weight because it makes you crave carbohydrates.

    The woman in this story, who remains anonymous, is the sister of a writer who was featured on Rhonda Gessner’s blog. We hope her story will serve as a warning to anyone who consumes diet drinks with the ingredient aspartame.

    The woman began to get very ill in 2001. It started with stomach spasms; she had so much pain that she had a hard time walking around and even getting out of bed. She had several biopsies done to determine what was wrong with her. Doctors couldn’t give her a definite diagnosis, but they suspected she might have multiple sclerosis (MS).

    By March of 2002 she was on 24 different kinds of prescription medications and had to be in a wheelchair. She was in so much pain and felt so sick that she actually felt death was close. She began her final preparations, putting her home, bank accounts, and life insurance in her older daughter’s name, and making sure her younger kids would be taken care of.

    Finally she planned a trip to Florida so she could have one last getaway. Her trip was scheduled for March 22nd. Her sister called on March 19th to ask about her test results. During the conversation, her sister recalled an article she had read about the dangers of aspartame poisoning. She asked the woman if she ever drank diet soda.

    The woman responded that she did, and was about to have one that very moment! Her sister told her not to drink it ever again and emailed her the article about aspartame poisoning. Shortly thereafter, the woman called her sister with astonishing news – she had stopped drinking the diet soda and, only 32 hours later, she was able to walk again and no longer had muscle spasms!

    When she got to Florida, she was no longer taking her myriad of prescription pills and only had to take one pill for aspartame poisoning. She ended up making a full recovery!

    Conclusion/Findings: While denying that aspartame is an allergen, the FDA says: However, certain people with the genetic disease phenylketonuria (PKU), those with advanced liver disease, and pregnant women with hyperphenylalanine (high levels of phenylalanine in blood) have a problem with aspartame because they do not effectively metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine, one of aspartame's components. High levels of this amino acid in body fluids can cause brain damage. Therefore, FDA has ruled that all products containing aspartame must include a warning to phenylketonurics that the sweetener contains phenylalanine.

    Instead of addressing the single point, that the topic of the thread you started is not supported by the study you provided, you just threw up an anecdote by some fictional internet friend-of-a-friend.

    When called out on that, you just throw up a new wall of text to muddy the waters.

    Pick any study off that list, search the forum to determine it hasn't been previously discussed, start a thread on it, and I will tell you why posting it makes you wrong yet again.

    Actually the study is about aspartame and MSG. It tested three different excitotoxins, one of which is a metabolite of aspartame. The dose figures you have are incorrect. Humans concentrate excitotoxins in the bloodstream at a level of 5 times higher than mice. That would put the experiments' dose equivalent to 12 times the average daily dose. However, the study wasn't concerned with the average daily dose. It was concerned with a single dose that could cause irreversible damage to parts of the brain by the excitotoxins and that is what it found. This irreversible brain damage from a single dose is seen in infant and very young mice in these experiments. Given the low body weight of infants, it is very easy for them to obtain a high dose (mg of excitotoxin per kg of body weight). MSG was removed from all baby food as a direct result of this and other experiments on excitotoxins. However, an infant or young child could obtain a fairly high dose of excitotoxin from non-baby food products such as diet drinks or soup (for example).
