Once upon a time, middle class households took home 62 percent of all income in America.

Today, that number has dropped to just 43 percent. This is just one of the absolutely astounding statistics that you will read about in this article. Over the years, the middle class in America has been in steady decline. Our incomes have been going down, our net worth has been going down, the quality of our jobs has been going down, and yet the cost of living just keeps going up. As a result of all of these factors, more Americans are living in poverty today than ever before, and dependence on the government has exploded to unprecedented levels.

I am slightly confused by some of their data. In the article, they note that:

yet they have a chart where a family of three is "high income" if they make $126,000.

Who and how many people are in the "middle class" depends on how you define it. And it changes over time. A household with "middle income" today has assets which would have been considered "upper class" 50 years ago. Bigger homes. Two cars. A color TV in every room. Telephones for every person in the family. "Poor" in this country would be at least middle class in a lot of the rest of the world.

How do we know a middle class is "good"? It's a pretty new phenomenon, and economics alone can't tell us whether ANYTHING is good or bad(it's a descriptive science).

When you are not rich and want to avoid being poor, then you know the middle class is "good".

Too subjective to be a valid argument. "Poor" is relative. i.e.-compare the "poor" in the U.S. to the "poor" of the 3rd world. ETA: We also know that some people subjectively prefer poverty-such as Henry David Theoreau and the guys who live in monastaries and gals who live in nunneries.

middle class is an illusion. It works as a buffer to keep the 99.9% from killing the top .1%. Check out L-curve income.

The other thing that's never mentioned is that these numbers are heavily dependent on location.
There is no place within 40 miles radius of Washington, DC where $145k puts you in the upper income bracket for a family of four.
And the overwhelming majority of the families who are in the middle class here have two income earners.
But just one of those incomes in, say, Indianapolis, is going to put you in a much nicer house and nicer cars than you'd have had in DC with two incomes.

So basically all of the government regulations of the past 40 years is working perfectly.
