On Thursday night,
middle and high school students around Iowa participated in a Statewide Youth Caucus as part of a Caucus 101 curriculum.
Participants gathered at area high schools and were able to participate in both a Democratic and Republican caucus to choose their nominee for the presidency. Bernie Sanders won nearly 53 percent support on the Democratic side, while Dr. Ben Carson claimed the Republican victory with 22 percent. Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate tells KMA News that students were able to hear messages from each campaign before they began the selection process.
"They listened to the candidate's messages, because we had video messages from each of them and -- in some of the cases -- candidates actually came to some of the sites," said Pate. "Based on that, they gave us their snapshot on who they thought was hitting the hot spots and who they would favor for the presidency. It was a great learning experience for them."
Over 1,600 students registered and participated in the event,
including around 1,000 students that will be eligible to participate in the real Caucus in February. Pate says the results could serve as an eye-opener for some campaigns when it comes to connecting with a younger electorate.
"They sent some pretty clear signals, I think, based on what the messages were the candidates gave them," said Pate. "I looked at those results and on the Democrat side, 53 percent of the young people were with Sanders and O'Malley had 24 percent, Clinton had just 15 percent. That's a wake-up call, I think, that this is what young people are listening to."
Pate adds that the same message rings true on the GOP side as well.
"On the Republican side, you had 22 percent for Carson, 15 percent for Trump and Rubio popped in there with 14.8 percent, followed by Paul and Cruz," said Pate. "They're listening to the messages the candidates are giving them today and how they are responding. I think, the candidates should take them seriously, because these young people are key voters in the caucuses coming up."
Pate says the participation numbers paired with the results shows how passionate Iowa is about the political process.
"It speaks well to Iowans and how fired up we are about caucuses," said Pate. "I think the candidates better get serious, because these young people are listening, and they are voters."
