PLAYA DEL REY (CBSLA.com) — A stretch of beach in El Segundo that was closed due to medical waste and other garbage washing ashore reopened Friday night. But Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey remained closed while cleanup efforts continue.

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the beach was reopened between Grand Avenue and 45th Street around 6 p.m. Dockweiler State Beach from Grand Avenue north to Ballona Creek in Playa del Rey was still closed.

The beach was declared off-limits on Wednesday after debris including hypodermic needles, condoms, tampon applicators and other waste began washing up on the sand. Excessive bacteria levels were found in the water.

County health officials are warning people to avoid contact with ocean water, wet sand and any materials that washed ashore at Dockweiler State Beach.

Sanitation District spokeswoman Tonya Durrell said Thursday that crews collected at least 200 pounds of waste from the beaches. Officials believe it was discharged from a pipeline belonging to the city-owned Hyperion Treatment Plant.

The mile-long pipeline had been dormant but was brought back online last week as a heavy storm strained the regular 5-mile pipeline.

Durrell says the rains may have overflowed a tank meant to capture solid matter.

to my knowledge, storm water and waste water systems are never interconnected.

my industry used real acid to clean A/C/R coils in the early 80's. we changed over to strong alkaline cleaners.
because of fish kills in the rivers and streams. in the late 80's.

I wonder if a bunch of homeless people... were "displaced" by the storm water?

sediment tanks do not normally contain the type of debris described.

MMSD operates the only combined sewage system in Wisconsin on Lake Michigan.[9]*This leads to its dumping of untreated sewage into*Lake Michigan*by accident or as a result of*sewer overflow*on a periodic basis.[10]*MMSD cannot calculate the exact volume of these dumping events, and therefore can only provide estimates.[9]*It has discovered that the estimates MMSD provides have been inaccurate in the past.[9]

The State of Wisconsin filed a complaint against MMSD's dumping in October, 2005.[9]*By late March, 2006 the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District had accidentally dumped 800,000 gallons of sewage into Lake Michigan. The accidents occurred as workers at the Jones Island facility were testing a new computer operating system. Testing was done under the United Water contract.[citation needed]*1994 through mid-2011 MMSD dumped 24.2 billion gallons of untreated sewage including human feces into Lake Michigan.[11]*In June 2011, combined sewers discharged 170.5 million gallons of untreated wastewater to rivers and Lake Michigan.[citation needed]

On April 10, 2013 combined sanitary and storm sewer overflows were again redirected to rivers and Lake Michigan.[12]Diverting combined sewer overflows to waterways is an emergency measure to prevent sewage backups into basements.[13]Officials said the heavy rains caused sewers in the Milwaukee area to spill an estimated 595 million gallons of untreated wastewater to local waterways.[14]
