Money drenched in blood: Pope scolds Congress for US made weapons sold around the world

It is amazing hypocrisy that US media owners often get on high horse judging Africans' "blood diamonds" but I have never heard a peep in our media about tens if not hundreds of billion dollars of " 'Money drenched in blood" being made by US companies and their investors?

Why it took a foreign leader to point out massive blood drenched sore right under our noses?

Blood drenched money making has spiked under the "Nobel Peace Prize" winner.

Pope Francis Scolds Congress for Gun and Weapons Sales

On September 24, Pope Francis scolded Congress for guns and weapons which are manufactured in America and sold around the world.

He said he was determined “to minimize and, in the long term, to end the many armed conflicts throughout our world,” as he addressed the billion-dollar sales from American companies that he sees as a contributing factor to conflicts abroad.

According to The Intercept, Pope Francis said:
Here we have to ask ourselves: Why are deadly weapons being sold to those who plan to inflict untold suffering on individuals and society? Sadly, the answer, as we all know, is simply for money: money that is drenched in blood, often innocent blood. In the face of this shameful and culpable silence, it is our duty to confront the problem and to stop the arms trade.

U.S. manufacturers make tens of billions cumulatively—The Intercept cites a figure of $23.7 billion in 2014 alone—from guns and weapons that are sold “to nearly 100 different countries.” The sales “have surged to record levels” under Obama, due in part to taxpayer subsidized sales to Israel and Egypt and “huge shipments to Gulf States, particularly Saudi Arabia.” And Saudi Arabia has subsequently been criticized for using “cluster bombs and other munitions… to hit densely populated areas, schools, and even a camp for displaced people in Yemen.” These are some of the things that appear to be behind Pope Francis’s statements on this issue.

    http://www.breitbart.com/big-governm...weapons-sales/

In addition to spending much, much more on its own military -- both in raw numbers and on a per capita basis -- than any nation in the world, the United States remains one of the world's leading arms exporters, shipping some $8.2 billion in high-tech lethal weaponry to our cash-paying friends around the globe. Wherever cluster bombs are dropped or tear gas lobbed at pro-democracy protesters in the world, there's an excellent chance that a U.S. company profited on the transaction.

This is the kind of thing that used to be an issue. Day, the founder of the Catholic Worker movement, was a staunch pacifist who vehemently opposed the use and spread of nuclear weapons, which inspired the now largely forgotten Catholic peace movement that flourished in the Vietnam War era. By then, that wild-eyed radical -- President Dwight Eisenhower -- had also tried to warn America about the perils of the military-industrial complex. Today, America's runaway military budget and its billion-dollar arms deals rarely raise a peep. Like Michael Corleone said, "Don't ask me about my business, Kay."

In a remarkable role reversal, Pope Francis took advantage of his historic address to the U.S. Congress to lecture politicians on the importance of wealth creation for lifting the poor out of poverty.

Back in July, when a journalist told the Pope that many Americans view his words on the global economy as a criticism of the American economic system and way of life, Francis promised that he would take the critique seriously and would study up on American economic life.

He was also criticized for paying too little attention to the middle class, “people who work and pay their taxes, normal people.”

“That’s a good correction,” the Pope replied. “You’re right. It has been my mistake not to think about this,” after which he acknowledged: “I should go more into this in my teaching.”

Now, in the most important political address of his trip, the Pope has done just that, holding up hard-working members of the middle class as an example to all and praising the U.S. free market system. Stymieing the predictions of the pundits who announced that the Pope would “probably discuss American capitalism’s flaws” in his words to Congress, he has done the opposite.

Likening the men and women of Congress to the biblical figure of Moses, he reminded them of the importance of the simple, industrious people who make America great.

The Pope said that it is “the many thousands of men and women who strive each day to do an honest day’s work, to bring home their daily bread, to save money and – one step at a time – to build a better life for their families” who “sustain the life of society.”

These men and women “generate solidarity by their actions, and they create organizations which offer a helping hand to those most in need,” he said.

But the Pope’s most striking words came when speaking about the ability of the free market to lift people out of poverty.

In the fight against poverty, Francis said, it “goes without saying that part of this great effort is the creation and distribution of wealth. The right use of natural resources, the proper application of technology and the harnessing of the spirit of enterprise are essential elements of an economy which seeks to be modern, inclusive and sustainable.”

“Business is a noble vocation,” the Pope continued, “directed to producing wealth and improving the world. It can be a fruitful source of prosperity for the area in which it operates, especially if it sees the creation of jobs as an essential part of its service to the common good.”

This doesn’t mean that Francis will lessen his attention on helping the poor, but it does signal a realization that the free market system can do just that.

Air Force's plan for new stealth bomber could give Southland a boost

The Air Force plans to award a lucrative contract Tuesday to develop and build a fleet of 80 to 100 long-range stealth bombers over the next decade, a massive military spending project that could help resuscitate Southern California's beleaguered aerospace industry.
The estimated $60-billion initial contract is one of the largest in Air Force history and culminates an intense four-year battle involving three of the world's largest military contractors.
Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Air Force leaders will announce the winning bid — either Northrop Grumman Corp. or a team consisting of Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp. — at the Pentagon after financial markets close in New York to avoid turmoil in stock prices, according to U.S. officials who were not authorized to speak publicly about it.

Sounds to me like the pope is taking a backhanded swipe at the 2nd amendment.

I'm all for getting rid of subsidies for everything from guns to solar panels. That said what would happen to the right to bear arms for U.S. citizens if the gun manufacturers as a whole went out of business? Or am I the only one that sees the pope lumping firearms in with cluster bombs as implicit support for the UN small arms treaty that many 2nd amendment advocates see as a major problem?

Here’s how much it costs to replace the 59 Tomahawk missiles Trump fired on Syria
    Published: Apr 8, 2017

Each Tomahawk missile, made by Raytheon, costs about $1 million

    ClaudiaAssis

It could cost about $60 million to replace the cruise missiles that the U.S. military rained on Syrian targets Thursday night.
Each Tomahawk missile, made by Raytheon Co. RTN, +1.47% likely cost $1 million, according to experts.

The U.S. used 59 of them on a Syrian air base in response to the Syrian government’s chemical-weapons attack that killed scores of civilians earlier this week.

Weighing arms sale, U.S. seeks Saudi pledge on Yemen civilian casualties

The United States wants new commitments from Saudi Arabia to improve its targeting procedures to minimize civilian casualties in its part in the Yemen civil war as it weighs resuming sales of precision-guided munitions to Riyadh, U.S. officials told Reuters.
An announcement of the weapons sale had been anticipated last month, but objections by mostly Democratic lawmakers and human rights groups have complicated the matter, the U.S. officials and others close to the issue said.
"We want the Saudis to show that they are committed to use these things properly," said one U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
At issue is the sale of about $390 million worth of guidance systems made by Raytheon Co that convert "dumb" gravity bombs into precision-guided munitions that are supposed to more accurately hit targets.
Nearly 4,800 civilians have been killed in Yemen since the latest round of conflict began in March 2015, most of them by the Saudi-led coalition seeking to restore ousted President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, the United Nations human rights office said in March.
The conflict pits Iran-allied Houthi rebels against the government backed by the Saudi-led Arab coalition.
