I don't understand why so many people worship the Pope. I understand why Catholics worship him, it's all those other people I'm really confused about.

That is way out of line. It sounds like you spend way too much time on Progressive conspiracy blogs.

No one worships the pope, he is simply the leader of the Catholic Church.
    * See my visitor message area for caveats related to my posting history here.
    * Also, I have effectively retired from all social media including posting here and are basically opting out of anything to do with national politics or this country on federal or state level and rather focusing locally. I may stop by from time to time to discuss philosophy on a general level related to Libertarian schools of thought and application in the real world.

Progresive? No, I'm a Reformed Christian that understands the socialism of the Roman Catholic religion. But "progressivism" surely sums up Rome quite nicely.

“The spirits of darkness are now among us. We have to be on guard so that we may realize what is happening when we encounter them and gain a real idea of where they are to be found. The most dangerous thing you can do in the immediate future will be to give yourself up unconsciously to the influences which are definitely present.” ~ Rudolf Steiner

Catholicism isn't any more inherently socialist than any Protestant denomination. The socialist wing of the Catholic clergy and laity is just the most voiciferous and obnoxious. See Dr Woods' book:
Ask a college student today what he knows about the Catholic Church and his answer might come down to one word: "corruption." But that one word should be "civilization." Western civilization has given us the miracles of modern science, the wealth of free-market economics, the security of the rule of law, a unique sense of human rights and freedom, charity as a virtue, splendid art and music, a philosophy grounded in reason, and innumerable other gifts that we take for granted as the wealthiest and most powerful civilization in history. But what is the ultimate source of these gifts? Bestselling author and professor Thomas E. Woods, Jr. provides the long neglected answer: the Catholic Church. Woods’s story goes far beyond the familiar tale of monks copying manuscripts and preserving the wisdom of classical antiquity. In How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization, you’ll learn: · Why modern science was born in the Catholic Church · How Catholic priests developed the idea of free-market economics five hundred years before Adam Smith · How the Catholic Church invented the university · Why what you know about the Galileo affair is wrong · How Western law grew out of Church canon law · How the Church humanized the West by insisting on the sacredness of all human life No institution has done more to shape Western civilization than the two-thousand-year-old Catholic Church—and in ways that many of us have forgotten or never known. How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization is essential reading for recovering this lost truth. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Educated Catholics don't worship the pope. He's just a bishop. If there are people who worship him, they're just fringey kooks like Mary-worshipers.

I'd argue that protestantism is more compatible with the left, because of it's democratic (small d) tendencies, but that's really only of historical interest at this point.

By now, the left has infiltrated all the churches (along with every other type of civil institution).

Yeah, those Calvinistic Puritans were really good at being compatible with the left.
