The origin of the 17th Amendment. Is it tied to the Civil War?

Hello, I was doing some research on the 17th Amendment. I'm having difficulty finding a solid origin from a trustworthy source... it's almost like I can't find a straight answer.

Does anyone have some insight on this or can help me out with a proper reference on this?

    Thank you very much.

I believe the single biggest reason that passed is Mark Twain's 1873 novel The Gilded Age.

I believe a lot of it had to do with corruption at the time (as if making Senators directly elected fixes this).
    Equality is a false god.
