Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s supporters will abandon the mogul once they realize he is a fake conservative.
“He’s about as fake as a conservative I’ve ever seen,” Paul told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Bruce St. James and Pamela Hughes on Tuesday.
Paul said Trump supporters haven’t yet figured out that the former “Apprentice” host supports higher taxes, government-endorsed health care, partial-birth abortion and is an opponent to property rights. Paul said Trump pushed the government to use eminent domain to give land to Trump property owners.
“I think when people discover more about Trump, they’ll flee from him with their hair on fire,” he said.
Trump has created a new divide in his constant attack of illegal immigration when he used the term “anchor babies,” implying that people cross into the U.S. illegally for the purpose of giving birth to a child who will become a citizen.
The Trump campaign asserts that 400,000 children are born each year to women who entered the country illegally. The actual number appears to be smaller, but is still sizable. A Pew Research Center study in 2010 estimated 340,000 babies born in 2008 were the offspring of people in the country illegally.
Paul said he wants the courts to decide the issue. He said they have never ruled on children born to illegal parents, only those that already have their green card.
“There is a part of the 14th Amendment that says, ‘and are under the jurisdiction of,’ and there is a question: If you come here illegally, are you under the jurisdiction of the United States or are you still under the jurisdiction of the country from which you came?”
Paul said the issue stems from the problems with the immigration system as a whole. While Trump pushes for a wall paid for by Mexico along the nation’s southern border, the Kentucky senator said a combination of walls in high-traffic areas and helicopter stations should be enough to secure the border.
Paul also said the next president needs to adopt a zero-tolerance stance on illegal immigration while the nation creates a digitized and functional legal program that would make it easier and faster for noncitizens to acquire work permits and/or citizenship.
