JONES CALLS ON FEDS NOT TO OVERREGULATE SPINY DOGFISH

    Aug 13, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C.--Last month, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) sent a letter to Dan Ashe, Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, asking him to oppose any proposals that would impact the continued ability of U.S. fishermen to responsibly and sustainably manage and catch spiny dogfish. The letter supports the position of the Sustainable Fisheries Association (SFA), which also wrote to Director Ashe in anticipation of the 17th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP17) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which will take place next year in Johannesburg, South Africa. The letter explains that federal and state management of spiny dogfish has been successful, with a 240% increase in amount of the species able to reproduce between 2001 and 2013. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Marine Stewardship Council consider the spiny dogfish fishery to be sustainable.

"In the past 15 years, the spiny dogfish stock has grown and been responsibly maintained so that it is not overfished, benefiting fisherman in Eastern North Carolina and up the East Coast," said Congressman Jones. "The last thing fishermen in Eastern North Carolina need is an international body to assert unnecessary controls over fish that are already being properly maintained and managed here in the U.S."

Bureaucrats don't give a flip. This international treaty would mean more funding to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to regulate. Thanks, Walter. You really do some good things, but that is not how it works. Better to state that any implementation of said treaties need to go through Congress first, line by line.
