    Sleeping problems

So here I sit drinking a caramel coffee at 4:25 AM. I just couldn't sleep and can't figure out why. I am wide awake and I still have to get through today with tons of work to do. I'm probably up for the rest of the day now.

I even tried drinking some wine before bed last night hoping that would knock me out, but no such luck. Lately I haven't been sleeping good at all. Anyone got any good suggestions?

    Is the coffee caffeinated?

Seriously, though, you'll probably have to mentally review the past few days or weeks and ask yourself if there is anything happening in your personal life which is troubling you enough to keep you awake. Anything you're really worried about or can't let go of in your thoughts.

If it's not that, then it's likely a physical problem of some sort, which would take a lot more narrowing down.

I know this is pretty vague and not very helpful. I hope you're able to solve the problem and get some rest soon. I understand how miserable it is to be tired and know there's still a whole day's work lying ahead of oneself....

In the short term, a Melatonin supplement may help. As for me, I'm a night person, and continually keep trying how to cope with the day timers. You might consider working 2nd or 3rd shift.

You're probably right. I do have and have had a lot of stuff going on that past two months. I was caring for two disabled people and one I had to give up and place in the nursing home, but not before having to have him rushed to the hospital twice. I cared for him for 11 years, so it was hard watching him go through these changes and then him asking me why I was giving him up. It was really hard. Then the other lady I take care of ended up in the hospital as well. While this was all happening, we're trying to get our house ready for market to sell.

Then one of our old cats that we've had for 17 years became ill. She was always an indoor kitty and we knew she didn't have long before we were going to have to take her to be put down because we didn't want her suffering. The other day I left the sliding door open for just a few minutes to let the dog out and she must have went out then because we searched the house and yard and drove through the neighborhood and couldn't find her anywhere. It's like she knew her time was near. We've both been grieving over not knowing what happened to her, but we're sure she didn't last long outside because she was getting so weak and thin. In fact we both said that the next day we going to take her in to be put down. It's like she knew or something. We had her for 17 years--this was just so strange that she did this.

So yeah--been going through a lot lately and maybe this is why I can't sleep.

I've worked all of my life--I just turned 60 and I'm ready to quit. The hub wants me to quit too. It's hard getting used to the idea, but I've got a lot of plans for the future I'd like to do that I've never had the time to do before. Yeah--there's a lot of really big changes happening now, so I'm pretty sure that's why I can't sleep lately.

Stress, whether you admit it to yourself or not.

Everybody deals with it differently, sex-drugs and rock-n-roll are the old tried and true...

Sounds like you have a lot on your mind. If the wine doesn't help, you're not drinking enough. Try some sleepytime tea. That stuff works great for my mom - she usually has a cup after a few glasses of hooch.

I don't sleep well either. My husband has been sleeping 12 hours as we speak. I've been up since 7.

I know I didn't drink enough wine last night. I won't make that same mistake tonight though.

My hubs the same way. He's out as soon as his head hits the pillow. I tried to go back to bed last night and I couldn't stop thinking about $#@! I just didn't want to think about at all. Finally, I just got up and started drinking coffee and said the hell with it.

Wine (or other alcohol) can actually interfere with sleep. You may pass out but your sleep is not as deep and less beneficial.

When I am worried about things, my mind can run fast and that makes it harder to sleep- thinking about everything I have to take care of the next day. I have to distract it- either by going on mental walks or bicycle rides (literally- picturing all the events- from putting on shoes, heading out the door, which way to turn, what I see along the way) or a low volume radio station. Avoid bright lights too like your cell phone or computer screen or the TV (though I have sometimes fell asleep with the TV on- that too can distract the brain).

Calm brand mineral supplement before bed. And switch to a light box or Phillips light alarm to wake up with instead of a "normal" alarm. Also, don't do "stimulating" stuff like reading before bed. And keep the bed a place only for sleeping and sex. That way your mind doesn't associate it with other stuff that keeps you awake.

Yeah, I would say that's your problem... I am so sorry to hear about all of those sad events in your life. It sounds like you are going through an exceptionally rough time right now, and there's never any easy way to get past things like this.

Do you have anyone (besides your long-sleeping hubby) you can talk to? A close friend or family member? A pastor/spiritual advisor? Sometimes a burden shared is a burden lightened.

Thoughts and best wishes! I hope all works out well for you.

ordinary tylenol helps me fall asleep

I know tylenol is not popular on this forum, but for many years I've found that taking an ordinary dose of tylenol often helps me with insomnia. I only use the "regular" or "extra-strength" (or arthritis strength) tylenol, NOT the kind that has a "PM" in it's name. ("Tylenol PM" actually has some extra ingredient added, but I think it's just some allergy/benedryl type medicine, which I don't like using.)

I never understood why this worked, but a few months ago a study came out claiming that using tylenol blunts your emotions, so that could be why. Fretting over unpleasant things is what usually keeps me awake, and at such times duller emotions are welcome. (Be aware that too much tylenol is not good for your liver.)
    (April 5, 2015)
"Paracetamol [tylenol] may dull emotions as well as physical pain, new study shows'," The Guardian reports.
The story comes from research testing whether over-the-counter painkiller* paracetamol can blunt not just the feeling of pain, but also emotions.
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhe...-well-as-pain/
Using alcohol is a double-edged sword because the quality of your sleep will not be as restful, and eventually you wake up depressed and hungover.

And yes, cannabis indica (as opposed to cannabis sativa) really is used to treat insomnia.

Sorry about your cat. Hope you start feeling better soon.

Thanks, but the wine did work last night. I didn't drink enough to be hung over, but just enough to give me a mellow buzz and relax. I fell right asleep last night.

It has been the stress from everything that's happened in the last two months, plus losing our kitty and now we have another two other kitties that are 18 years old and both are blind and one is deaf as well now too. I know the time is coming when I'm going to have to have them put to sleep, but they're still eating, using the bathroom and finding their way around the house. I won't let them suffer though. I'll know when it's time, but it's hard watching them fade away. When those two are gone, we'll just have one kitty left and my little dog Bub. We should have those two around for good long time to come because they're not that old. Lot's of crap going on right now--life is kicking my ass up and down the street--but I know I'll get through it because I realize that I've got a lot more to be thankful for than many others.

When ever I start feeling sorry for myself--I have to stop and realize just how much I do have to be thankful for. Thanks again for the props.

Try This Easy Homemade Sleep Remedy With Just 4 Ingredients

    by Christina Sarich
    Posted on August 1, 2015

We’ve talked a lot about how important it is to get your sleep at Natural Society. It helps to regulate hormones, lower stress, and even staves off obesity and the diseases that are associated with it. Instead of heading to the pharmacy to take an over-the-counter sleep med that may be harmful to your health, try this simple, 4-ingredient home-made sleep remedy.

By making this concoction and taking it right before sleep, it helps to sustain the body, even through spikes of cortisol (the stress hormone), and insulin (which makes you hungry and want to get up for that midnight snack.) This means you can fall asleep and stay asleep more easily.

Ingredients for this Natural Sleep Remedy:

    1. Coconut oil

    2. Raw, organic honey

    3. Himalayan sea salt

    4. Lavender

The coconut oil is full of healthful fats, which will help sustain your glucose levels.

The honey does the same, while providing important nutrients and reducing insulin spikes since it is digested slowly. It is known as nature’s energy booster. It may sound counter intuitive to eat an energy booster before sleep, but it can help to keep your sugar levels stable so that the body doesn’t wake up with hunger pangs.

The sea salt lowers cortisol and adrenaline, which can make it impossible to fall asleep. It also raises oxytocin levels (the feel good hormones, or ‘the love hormone’ which can also help you to feel relaxed and fall asleep.) Oxytocin also lowers stress hormones.

The lavender smells amazing, and reduces stress – again so that you can fall asleep. Lavender flowers are edible, so you can place them right into your mixture.
