Rick Santorum Slams Rand Paul on ISIS: 'I'd Expect to Hear That From Maybe Bernie Sanders'

Newly-minted presidential candidate Rick Santorum today slammed fellow 2016 hopeful Rand Paul, who said he blames Republican hawks for the rise of terrorist group ISIS.

“I think that is just fundamentally a misunderstanding of the nature of the enemy we face,” Santorum said in an exclusive interview with ABC News’ Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

“ISIS didn't come about because of ... the arms that America left behind. ISIS came about because they hate everything that we believe in and we stand for,” Santorum added. “I think the idea that we accept now that this tripe from the left that it’s our fault that ISIS exists -- go back to the thousand-year history of Muslim expansionism, and look at some of the horrible things that were done to spread radical Islam. That is not something that America had anything to do with.”

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, Sen. Paul asserted GOP hawks “created” ISIS.
“ISIS exists and grew stronger because of the hawks in our party who gave arms indiscriminately,” he said. “They created these people.”

But Santorum, who touted his national security credentials, took issue with Paul’s comment.
“I would expect to hear that from maybe Bernie Sanders. I don't expect to hear that from someone running for the Republican nomination,” Santorum told Stephanopoulos.

Wow, they are all lining up and taking their shots at Rand.

All I can say about Santorum is ... ewwwww.

These Republicans are writing Rand's USP for him. They're making it very clear where the ideological divide is.

This might work in Rand's favor if there is a critical mass of non war-hawks among the Republican base.

Everytime he opens his stupid mouth I remember this bit.

There are no crimes against people.
There are only crimes against the state.
And the state will never, ever choose to hold accountable its agents, because a thing can not commit a crime against itself.

Sure this is true but when Rand starts getting asked about this repeatedly he dont have to mention names, simply that he is the only one that introduced a bill to deal with situation while everyone else just sat back and twiddeled their thumbs. Actually it just occurred to me that maybe thats why Rand choose the words he did because he's leading them right into a trap when he does come out and remind everyone that he was the only one to try and deal with the issue. In fact I wouldnt be suprised to see Rand reintroduce the bill along with the stand with Israel by defunding their enemies bill. They are gonna feel pretty stupid when they realize they just got played..

Holy $#@!. Santorum once again with the most coherent historically grounded counter-argument of anyone.

Problem with it, Islam petered out due to internal corruption in the early 1900's. The US assault has galvanized a force that had nearly gone extinct.

I think this is an argument worth countering. Have a debate about actual Islam and the nature of it. Most don't know that Islam continuously assaulted the west for 1400 years and destroyed a lot of great civilisation, creating the dark ages.
    In New Zealand:
    The Coastguard is a Charity
Air Traffic Control is a private company run on user fees
The DMV is a private non-profit
Rescue helicopters and ambulances are operated by charities and are plastered with corporate logos
The agriculture industry has zero subsidies
5% of the national vote, gets you 5 seats in Parliament
A tax return has 4 fields
    Business licenses aren't a thing
    Prostitution is legal
We have a constitutional right to refuse any type of medical care

That's as far from the truth as you can come. The dark ages where upon Europe long before Islam was created. Both before and after Islam, large civilizations with huge cities continued to persist in the Middle East. The Arabs and Persians preserved the vast human knowledge acquired during antiquity, and added to it with own experimentation and infusions of ideas from Asia. This knowledge again rapidly spread throughout Europe, once Italian mercantile states opened their minds enough to disregard some of the strict thought-restrictions of the papacy, and applied it to their benefit. The renaissance means 'rediscovery', why? Because they rediscovered vital insights of thought and technology that had been lost from them since the the Roman era.

As for Muslims fighting Christians. Yes it happened. However, there was way more infighting between the Muslims, and between the Christians. Why? Because very few wars are fought over religion. Most are over access to land, resources or simply just power. Sometimes war over land and resources are re-branded as a religious war, however, to better mobilize the population and neighboring states to join in.

I don't expect most people to know this, but if you are going to post something about it, would you not check first?

Are you referring to the expansion of Islam that peaked in the 900sAD and then to the rise and decline of the Ottoman Empire? Because those are two completely different things. And as the other poster mentioned, the Muslim world is responsible almost exclusively (not even partially but almost 100%) for retaining the knowledge and academia from the age of Antiquity.

To borrow a phrase, "most don't know" the history of Islam. Then again, most people don't know the history of subjects that are of no concern to them, so it isn't really a big deal.

Rick is competing w/ Huck for his parcel of the GOP electorate so this is a win overall. They're competing together w/ Cruz, Carson and a few others to snag the entire bunch and Rand is flying high in all these interviews lately. Rand is that big time 2nd supporting candidate for these types just to let Jeb fall on hard along w/ Rubio on their war hawk knives.

    The first stage is denial.

Problem is, Sanatorium and his ilk are stuck in the first stage and refuse to budge.

On the other hand, he did carry eleven states and over 20% of the primary vote.

These comments on Rand are too weak sauced to be added to his list of golden comments. Some of Rick Santorum's better moments:

    "Ron Paul is disgusting"

"You know, Mitt [Romney], I don't want to go to a trade war, I want to beat China, I want to go to war with China."

"The right to privacy … doesn’t exist in my opinion in the United States Constitution, this right that was created - [by contraception activists] - this freedom actually intervenes and affects the family... it destroys the basic unit of our society because it condones behavior that’s antithetical to strong healthy families. Whether it’s polygamy, whether it’s adultery, where it’s sodomy..."

"What we’re talking about, basically, is priests who were having sexual relations with post-pubescent men. We’re not talking about priests with 3-year-olds, or 5-year-olds. We’re talking about a basic homosexual relationship" - Santorum defending pedofile catholic priests.

This clown peaked in 2012. With Huckabee around, he offers absolutely nothing. Furthermore, despite Santorum's performance in 2012, he's polling extremely poorly in Iowa and nationally. Nobody cares about this cad.

Sheesh. All this ganging up on Paul, you'd think he was in the lead or something.

Yep, in just the past few days, Paul has been attacked by Larry, Curly, Moe and Shemp...er, sorry...Christie, Graham, Jindal and Santorum.

Well, I bet Bernie Sanders demonstrated sufficient wisdom to vote against the Iraq War. Something Frothington cannot say...
"We have allowed our Nation to be overtaxed, and over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The Founders would be ashamed of us for what we're putting up with."

Never try to take the "politics" out of politics.

    First they ignore you.
    Then they laugh at you.
    Then they fight you.
Then you post that one Gandhi quote about them ignoring you.
Then you ultimately lose the election because of lack of funds and moral backbone in the electorate.

he is trying to say ISIS would exist without weapons. Except, they wouldnt because they were the minority and the state they were fighting against would have beat them down without weapons.
