Probably so in substance. However if Michelle Obama's last visit caused any minor ripples in the bilateral relations between the two powerful nations, there is potential that Obama grandma could smooth things over a bit in the opticals realm.

Syria: The Strange US/Israel/Al-Qaeda Ménage à Trois

Daniel McAdams at 15:44 pm EDT on September 28, 2012
A little more than a week after the extremists linked to Al-Qaeda by our own US government set up and murdered Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has announced that the United States would send an additional $45 million to the very same Al-Qaeda’s Syrian franchise.
Yes you read that right: The US is sending another $45 million to assist in Syria the same people it is fighting in Afghanistan and the same people who killed US Ambassador Chris Stevens in Libya.

CPUd, did you mistake current thread for this one?

Getting back to the topic. A day after news of Obama's grandma visiting Saudi Arabia for her muslim pilgrimage was reported, one of the most prominent Christian leaders in America linked ongoing slaughter of mideast Christians to Obama's Islamic upbringing.

Franklin Graham blames Obama: His Islamic upbringing may make him ignore Christian slaughter

    April 25, 2015
The Rev. Franklin Graham blamed President Obama on Friday for Islamic State’s murderous rampage and massacre of Christians in Iraq.
“We have a mess on our hands, and the president, and his policies are responsible for this,” the son of famous evangelist Billy Graham told Fox News host Eric Bolling on “The O’Reilly Factor.”

Graham said Obama’s upbringing has likely influenced him to remain silent on the atrocities against Christians around the world.
“As a youth, his influence was Islam,” Graham said. “Growing up, his impressions as a young man came from Islam, not the Christian faith.”
The removal of American troops from Iraq has accelerated the chaos in that area of the world, Graham said. Obama withdrew troops too soon, paving the way for Islamic State to take root.
Christians in Iraq are being butchered, and “the president has been doing virtually nothing,” he said, adding that he appreciates the airstrikes, but believes America may have to return ground troops to Iraq to defeat Islamic State, “I don’t think the airstrikes are enough. ISIS is growing.”
The evangelist was also critical of Obama’s untimely decision to use speeches at the National Prayer Breakfast and during Easter to call out Christians for past atrocities. Graham turned the tables back on Obama, repeating that he is doing nothing to help persecuted Christians, “being slaughtered” because of their faith.
“My question to the president and his administration: What are you going to do?” he said. “You going to say you didn’t know? You do know!”

It's more like a discussion on possible political implications and impact on US-Saudi ties based on a news.

But why you think news about Obama's grandma would lower a forum's standing in any way? Would a news about Bush's grandma visiting a close US ally on a religious prayer visit have evoked same response from you?

This news is not about random relative visiting a US ally at a critical juncture of US-Saudi relations, it is someone who is close to current US President.

Does anyone really care? 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. By 'improvement in relations,' are we expecting grandma's visit means they'll send fewer next time or what? You have to admit the bar is set pretty low as for what could be considered an improvement in relations.

More than 15 of the delegates that went to Saudi Arabia to pay respects to the Saudi King few months ago were top US Democrats or Republicans. Does that answer your question?

And without close US-Saudi relations, Ramadi would still have been in Iran's hands today:

"In Iran, the daily newspaper Javan, which is seen as close to the Revolutionary Guard, quoted Soleimani as saying the U.S. didn't do a "damn thing" to stop the extremists' advance on Ramadi.
"Does it mean anything else than being an accomplice in the plot?" he reportedly asked, later saying the U.S. showed "no will" in fighting the Islamic State, also known as ISIL or ISIS.
Soleimani said Iran and its allies are the only forces that can deal with the threat.
"Today, there is nobody in confrontation with (the Islamic State) except the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as nations who are next to Iran or supported by Iran," he said.
