Huckabee stands by Duggars: ‘Inexcusable’ but not ‘unforgivable’

Definitely something that would get him hammered in a general election:

    http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/huckabee-...id=sm_fb_msnbc

Republican presidential candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is standing by “19 Kids and Counting” star Josh Duggar, who issued an apology and resigned from his job on Thursday amid reports that he molested underage girls when he was a teenager.

“Janet and I want to affirm our support for the Duggar family,” Huckabee said in a statement Friday on behalf of himself and his wife. “Josh’s actions when he was an underage teen are as he described them himself, ‘inexcusable,’ but that doesn’t mean ‘unforgivable.’ He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities. No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are now trying to discredit Josh or his family by sensationalizing the story. Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things.”

The allegations against Duggar, now 27 years old, were first reported by In Touch magazine, which published a police report Thursday obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. The report alleges multiple instances in which Duggar molested underage girls as a teen. It also states that Duggar’s father, Jim Bob Duggar, waited more than a year to contact police after his eldest son confessed to sexually molesting several female minors.

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, who are also from Arkansas, recently endorsed Huckabee for president after campaigning for former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in 2012. A spokesman for Santorum did not immediately return msnbc’s request for comment.

Criticizing “today’s blood-thirsty media,” Huckabee said that “being a minor means that one’s judgement is not mature.”

“No one needs to defend Josh’s actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility,” Huckabee said.

The document published by In Touch, however, calls into question the “help” Huckabee claims that Duggar sought. In one portion, the report describes Jim Bob Duggar’s reluctance to send his son to a treatment program because one of the elders in his church said that “some of the programs for juveniles were finishing schools where juveniles learned how to offend from other offenders.” Jim Bob Duggar ended up finding “a Christian program in Little Rock” that he felt comfortable sending his son to, according to the report, but he could not remember the name. The elder Duggar said his son was in that program from March 17, 2003, until July 17, 2003, the police report states.

In a different portion of the document, however, Michelle Duggar tells police that the “training center” they sent their son to “was not really a training center” and that her son did not talk to a certified counselor while there.

“She said it was a guy they know in Little Rock that is remodeling a building,” the report states. “Det. Hignite asked if they guy was more of a mentor. She said kind of.”

Upon returning home in July 2003, the report states that Jim Bob Duggar and church elders took Josh Duggar to see a state trooper for a “very stern talk.” The trooper, however, did not charge Duggar with any crimes. And in a bizarre twist, In Touch reported that that same trooper, Cpl. Hutchins, is currently serving a 56-year prison sentence for child pornography.

The Duggars are politically active conservatives in addition to being deeply religious reality TV stars. Jim Bob Duggar was a state representative from 1999 until 2003, as well as a candidate for U.S. Senate. Before he resigned Thursday, Josh Duggar worked at the Washington D.C.-based Family Research Council, a conservative lobbying group that advocates for socially conservative policies and political candidates. Michelle Duggar has also built a reputation as an outspoken critic of civil rights protections for the LGBT community. Last year, she campaigned against a measure to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in the city of Fayetteville, Arkansas, saying that the law would have put children in danger.

“The Fayetteville City Council is voting on an ordinance this Tuesday night that would allow men – yes, I said men – to use women’s and girls’ restrooms, locker rooms, showers, sleeping areas and other areas that are designated for females only,” Duggar said in a robocall last August. “I don’t believe the citizens of Fayetteville would want males with past child predator convictions that claim they are female to have a legal right to enter private areas that are reserved for women and girls. I doubt that Fayetteville parents would stand for a law that would endanger their daughters or allow them to be traumatized by a man joining them in their private space. We should never place the preference of an adult over the safety and innocence of a child.”

In a statement, TLC announced Friday that it had pulled all episodes of “19 Kids and Counting” from the air. “We are deeply saddened and troubled by this heartbreaking situation, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and victims at this difficult time,” TLC said.

Well, as long as he said he was sorry then it's nothing right? The Huckster is going to have a good time walking this tightrope.

All this bull$#@! over the fact that he pinched his sleeping sister's, and some of her friend's prepubescent nipples when he was 14.

However I did chuckle at the fact that the state trooper they took him to for a stern talking to is now in jail for child pornography.

It sucks that they throw that in there as some kind of dig on him though. In my eyes he did nothing that required the intervention of the state, cops, or courts.

Kids being kids. He certainly shouldn't feel pressured to resign over $#@! he did when his armpits were just starting to stink.

I don't know the details (or much about these people at all) but if that's basically all that happened this is completely ridiculous. 14 year olds dunno wtf they are doing. Obviously it was addressed at the time and he changed his ways so who even cares?

Yeah, I'm certainly no Huckabee fan, but I agree with him on this. If the victims want justice they have the right to go forward and demand it, but I don't think anyone else has any business trying to hammer this repentant man over it.

Well I guess we know Huckabee isn't running a serious campaign now. A real candidate would have throw them under the bus in a heartbeat. Maybe after he drops out he can have them on his fox show and get some ratings.

Well he did let a cop killer out of jail as governor (who went on to kill another cop), so par for the course I guess.

    Why is everything about politics?

Interesting, I initially saw commercials for this program during other shows I watch on TLC and was just disgusted by this massive family and how dorky they all were. Then, I tuned in for a few shows cause nothing else was on and kinda got interested just because their family ways are so strange. The last episode I watched is where this Josh dude had his 3rd kid and then they were gonna move to DC and I was curious as to where he's be working. Big surprise, not so much. Idk, on one hand, I admire strong family ties but these guys take it to a whole new level. OTOH, I don't get along much w/ social conservatives that fall deep into the prude category where a racy conversation at times over a few drinks is frowned upon. Or, when folks act like they're holier than thou, can't stand that.

Normal 14 year old boys don't fondle their younger sisters' breasts and genitalia. The youngest sister was four.
    Four!

Lord, bring healing and wholeness to those poor girls.

    ****
Other bombshells in the police report are: Josh Duggar was investigated for multiple sex offenses — including forcible fondling — against five minors. Some of the alleged offenses investigated were felonies. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar were interview by the Springdale Police department on Dec. 12, 2006. The report says that James told police he was alerted in March, 2002 by a female minor that Josh — who turned 14-years-old that month — had been touching her breasts and genitals while she slept. This allegedly happened on multiple occasions. In 2006, Jim Bob told police that in July, 2002 Josh admitted to fondling a minor’s breasts while she slept. “James said that they disciplined (redacted, Josh) after this incident.” The family did not alert authorities.

Because Huckabee is a declared potus candidate. Like or not, when you do that every decision you make is political.

"Like or not, when you do that every decision you make is political."

So are the Duggars. Jim Bob, the father, is a former Arkansas state legislator and U.S. Senate candidate. He was running for the state senate at the exact time when these charges were sealed back in 2006. They came to fame because of politics. They were first noticed campaigning for Mike Huckabee back in 2008 (The Duggars would not be have been in politics if it wasn't for Huckabee). The whole family came up to Iowa in 2012 to campaign for Santorum. Just after they arrived and thanks to the clebrity cache they had from the TLC show, Santorum suddenly begins to rise in the polls, gets Bob VanderPlaats's endorsement and the rest is history. So you can thank the Duggar family, Josh and all, for ripping enough home schoolers in Iowa away from Ron Paul to give the caucus win to Santorum. Just lovely!

This wasn't just about his family, there other victims too. And if wasn't for the show, if Duggar were poor, non-white, anything else in Arkansas other than who he was then he would have been in jail for statutory rape. But no, he's a Duggar so he gets off easy. Gets three months of "therapy" and a "talk too" by a crooked Arkansas state trooper. There is no justice in the justice system. None! And it's not suprising Huckabee is closing ranks with the family he helped to create as far as celebrity goes.

I tell you what, there's an issue here that Rand can ride far, all the way to the White House if not just the nomination and that's justice one. Look at how many powerful people in this country get off scot free for their crimes while the poor and middle class, the non-white, others, go right to the can: bankers, celebrities, Generals, bishops, politicians, cops, you name it. Accountability. That's the name of the game. I tell you people are starting to get pissed at a two-tier justice system with prisons filled with drug users while white collar crooks get their own TV shows. The Duggars are no exceptions.

I'm not saying he shouldn't be legally punished, just that its not wrong to say he's forgivable.

The Duggars were relatively instrumental in siphoning votes away from Greg Brannon and putting them on Mark Harris. They claimed that Brannon wasn't Godly enough. I'm betting that none of Brannon's 7 kids molested children or had to be covered up by a politically influential dad.

It's something right out of South Park.
