Oklahoma FAILS to Reform Ballot Access (Again)

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma’s attempt at ballot access reform fell woefully short, perpetuating apathy among younger voters who remain disappointed with the state’s two-party system, a University of Oklahoma political science professor said.
Gov. Mary Fallin signed a measure last week reducing the number of signatures required to officially recognize a third political party in Oklahoma. Previously, state law required signatures totaling 5 percent of the last general election for governor or president so another party could be placed on the ballot.
House Speaker Jeff Hickman proposed dropping the requirement to 1 percent, but as politics would have it, a state Senate rules committee amended the bill, pushing the requirement to 3 percent or slightly less than 25,000 signatures. Hickman’s original bill would have required about 8,200 signatures.

The Libertarian and Green parties held a joint announcement today in regard to a renewed push to gain ballot access given the new ramifications.

The Libertarian and Green parties plan to launch a signature drive to get their party's nominees on the ballot, and a new state law is expected to aid in that effort. The two parties scheduled a joint news conference Monday at the state Capitol to announce their plans.

Under current law, political parties must gather signatures from registered voters equal to 5 percent of the votes cast in the last general election for governor or president, which would be about 41,000 based on 2014 turnout in the governor's race.

The law going into effect in November reduces that number to 3 percent in last gubernatorial election, which would be about 25,000 signatures."
