http://www.reddirtreport.com/red-dir...professor-saysOKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma’s attempt at ballot access reform fell woefully short, perpetuating apathy among younger voters who remain disappointed with the state’s two-party system, a University of Oklahoma political science professor said.
Gov. Mary Fallin signed a measure last week reducing the number of signatures required to officially recognize a third political party in Oklahoma. Previously, state law required signatures totaling 5 percent of the last general election for governor or president so another party could be placed on the ballot.
House Speaker Jeff Hickman proposed dropping the requirement to 1 percent, but as politics would have it, a state Senate rules committee amended the bill, pushing the requirement to 3 percent or slightly less than 25,000 signatures. Hickman’s original bill would have required about 8,200 signatures.
