Boehner Wants to Give Obama MORE Power? Posted by Jd Winteregg 10.40pc on April 23, 2015
You read that right.
Speaker Boehner is working to give President Obama fast-track authority in the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations. What this means is that the President will negotiate the trade agreement with 12 countries in the Pacific region and bring it back for Congress to vote yay or nay--with no opportunity to amend it. His agreement can put our country at the
mercy of international law that will supersede the Constitution. This is not 'Free Trade.'
Constitutionally, Congress is the only entity that can work a deal like this. Any push to give the President Fast Track authority is in fact unconstitutional. Speaker Boehner has sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution, and he's breaking this oath by pushing to appease special interest groups and crony capitalists. That's how it works--they give him money to work the political system, and he creates an environment for them that gives them the upper hand to the detriment of middle class, hard-working Americans. Someone who is "one of us" wouldn't work to create conditions that will send our jobs overseas.
But that's not the worst part of this deal. Think about it. Speaker Boehner wants to give our President--the President he criticizes--ultimate authority to negotiate this deal. Why would he be willing to turn over this process to a guy the American public does not trust? Did we not give Republicans the power to fight him this past election? That answer, unfortunately, is easy--
he would do this because he absolutely trusts President Obama.
Well, guess what?
I don't trust the President. Despite the unconstitutionality of the action, in no way should we vote to give this President fast-track authority in TPP negotiations. The veil of secrecy with negotiations needs to be ripped back, and Congress and the President need to be open about what is going on with this process.
The best way to restore the trust between the American people and our government is to elect fresh blood--people who hold the interests of their constituents above the interests of Big Business and K Street. I will fight to restore our country to Constitutional governance, and I will work to renew the trust between the people and their representatives.
Unlike some in DC, I refuse to sell out our country.
