BASIC SKILLS: The End Of Cheap Oil And The Rise Of The Scythe

Do this to mow your lawn and you will have no weight problems.

There is only one correct way: freedom. All other solutions are non-solutions.

It appears that artificial intelligence is at least slightly superior to natural stupidity.

Our words make us the ghosts that we are.

Convincing the world he didn't exist was the Devil's second greatest trick; the first was convincing us that God didn't exist.

Oh no, not the dreaded scythe rise! I wonder what a few sheep would cost to rent periodically?

Sheep will not be of much use if what you seek is a barn full of hay.

I've had to use one before (easiest when putting up political signs in random countryside). They are not fun, but they do get the job done.

Are you talking about a sheep or a scythe?

I've got an old one kind of like this out in the barn:

I've used it a few times to beat back the tall grass the stihl weed whacker can't handle. I've never grown any grain though.

Is it just me, or does she look really hot doing that?

I have two scythes. One has a fairly heavy (thick) blade, and the other, which apparently came from europe, has a very light blade. I haven't used them in quite a while.

If it comes down to no fuel, I'm going for a horse-drawn sickle bar mower, thank you very much.

In one of Ralph Moody's books, The Fields of Home, I think, he describes how his grandfather put him to work scything a field and how at first he was swinging it wrong and making a lot more work out of it than it was supposed to be. Great series, btw, aimed at a youthful audience but readable by anyone. It is autobiographical about growing up back at the turn of the last century. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Moody_%28author%29

There are many reports out about how we are running out of storage for oil...in the next 3 months or so. What make you think we're going to run out anytime soon?

I don't see anyone as having said it WAS going to happen. The question is, what will you do IF it happens?

If you're going to plan for such an event that lies significantly outside the standard deviation curve then you should also plan for what you'd do in the exact opposite possibility.

In my specific case, I'd just not cut the pastures and let the horses eat whatevers left. We've got enough acres of pasture that it would work. Of course if there was unlimited energy forever and ever? I probably wouldn't worry to much about it because its excessively unlikely.

Come on antifed. That new john deere was drug because of the weight not necessarily the age of the machine. Some of those old steam engines have an incredible amount of torque. Steam is still probably the most effective engine out there....well except for electric...which is all derived from steam.

I love old tractors. I've got an IH460 that my Great Grandfather bought in 50's. It worked for 60 years on my folk's dairy farm. We figure it had in that 25k-30k hours on it. Its now on my hobby farm enjoying retirement. Some day I'll have the money to take its "barn clothes" off and get it restored. I also own a farmall f12 on steel wheels. Its the same model that Grandmpa bought when the farm was changing over from real horse power to mechanical horse power.

    Oh, no doubt.

The premise of the OP's video was, however, "what does one do when the oil is gone?"

    I proposed using hard oil.

Plenty of it, just dig it out of the ground.
