Rand Paul said Wednesday that he met with the Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson this week while Mr. Adelson was in Washington for a congressional address by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel.

Mr. Paul and Mr. Adelson are not especially close — personally or in their world views. Mr. Adelson, a staunch supporter of Israel, favors a robust, activist military policy. Mr. Paul, the junior senator from Kentucky and a likely candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has advocated a more restrained approach overseas.

In an interview on the radio program “Jewish Moments in the Morning,” Mr. Paul said that Mr. Adelson had assured him he would not fund an effort by Republicans to defeat him. The New York Times reported last week that Mr. Adelson had told associates that he was open to the idea of underwriting such a campaign. Many hawkish Republicans are worried about the prospect that Mr. Paul could gain traction in the primary and are already attacking him as ill-equipped to lead a country at war with extremists.

In the interview, Mr. Paul said that he met with Mr. Adelson and his wife, Miriam, and that “they assured me there was no truth to that.”

Because if he didn't do that then Adelson would spend tens of milions to stop him, and Rand isn't going to be able to compete with that kind of money. Someone like Adelson is never going to support Rand, but Rand's goal is to at least convince Adelson that he's not his enemy.

Nice to know that Rand is so confident of his ideas that he doesn't think anyone could figure out what he is"really up to." Shhhh. It's such a great secret scheme that Adelson cannot possibly have the brains to figure it out in this role of one of the American oligarchs.

And you can also be a non interventionist and criticize Obama's approach to Israel, as Obama has been very much in favor of interfering in Israel's internal affairs.

If that's true, Rand should really be all over that and heavily criticize Obama for that. That would really show that non intervention (or at least less intervention) is actually a pro Israel foreign policy.

Agreed. Sometimes it just takes talking to someone to deflate rumors, and really burst your opponents bubbles.

Not only do they disagree on foreign policy, they also disagree on domestic policy. Adelson is a crony capitalist and the biggest supporter of no internet gambling.

I actually do believe he would bankroll a campaign against Rand.
