Lawyer: NSA Leaker Edward Snowden Wants to Return Home

    MOSCOW — Mar 3, 2015, 3:47 PM ET
    Associated Press

NSA systems analyst Edward Snowden wants to return to the United States from Russia if he's guaranteed a fair trial, his Russian lawyer said Tuesday.

Anatoly Kucherena told a news conference Tuesday that he has teamed up with U.S. and German lawyers to work on the issue, but gave no further details.

Snowden was stranded in a Moscow airport in 2013 on his way from Hong Kong to Cuba, shortly after he released extensive documentation about the National Security Agency's surveillance programs. Russia has granted him asylum, attracting the ire of the United States.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied that the nation's security agencies had worked with Snowden.

Snowden's whereabouts have not been made public. Kucherena said Snowden moves freely but is accompanied by guards. "He goes shopping, he visits museums and theaters under escort," he said.

He said Snowden's longtime girlfriend, Lindsay Mills, visited him in Moscow. "They have a very good relationship," he said, adding that he rejects other potential dates offered for Snowden.

The lawyer, who presented his book about Snowden, praised him as a "heroic and open person," who has "principles and convictions" and didn't hesitate to defy the U.S. government.
Another mark of a tyrant is that he likes foreigners better than citizens, and lives with them and invites them to his table; for the one are enemies, but the Others enter into no rivalry with him. - Aristotle's Politics Book 5 Part 11

If that wouldn't be the dumbest possible thing he could do. Boobus would be chanting for their gods in blue to string him up in public, no need for a trial.

There are no crimes against people.
There are only crimes against the state.
And the state will never, ever choose to hold accountable its agents, because a thing can not commit a crime against itself.

  8. #7
He is not even allowed to raise a defense as to why he did it (to prevent criminality or otherwise). Four-fifths, if not the entirety, of the 'trial' would be classified under state secrecy. The lawyers probably wouldn't even be allowed to talk about much of anything to press or even their significant other.

Then he will be convicted in a sham of trial and put in the basement of Leavenworth for a few decades. This isn't even really debatable as to the outcome of this. If they try him per document he'd never get out. And all they have to prove is that he took them.

Maybe one day he could come back with a hero's welcome but until that day, here's hoping he's drinking the finest vodka and if he's reading this thread, never come back.

If they try it in the FISA court, they would appoint a lawyer who couldn't even talk to Ed or his other lawyer about his own defense.

Snowden has been saying this from the very start. This isn't new information his lawyer is revealing.

Might be because the lawyer is promoting a new book.

Or, maybe he just said it again.

Perhaps his point it to display the myriad ways in which he will not be guaranteed a fair trial.

    He is an activist afterall.

Something seems like it is out of context.

I also want to return to the US, not as it is today, but as it once was when people were free of Tyranny and Terror created by the Government.

Hm... Time frame? If preparations for his return are being made right now few months would pass before he returns. Then it would pass few more months before trial starts. Who knows how many months would pass till verdict is made. If he returns it would get a lot of media attention. With a little luck media attention would help Rand to get elected and he could ensure fair trial...

Holder has apparently offered to take the death penalty off the table. Snowden will stand trial if the charges are not espionage act crimes.

Ed's an idiot if he takes them at theire word on this.

I think his lawyer is trying to paint Ed as a guy that still loves good 'ole USA.

Saying he wants to come back is showing that he loves the country and he's not a Russia commie loving traitor bastard. The way the some are portraying him.

The fact that he's stayed with his American GF, and has rejected dates with Russian girls, sounds silly to me, until I realize it's part of the whole, "Hey, I love America. I love American women! I love my country! I'm USA through and through! I'm ready to come back if I can get a fair trial!"

    I think it's more a PR/Image thing.

Of course, he does. Who else would stick their neck out in such a fashion? A lover of his country. That's who.

That goes without saying, but there has been a lot of backlash of people calling him a sellout to Putin, a commie bastard (even though russia is not communist), etc.

He need to be seen not as a traitor or Russia lover, but as a patriot. Not just in our eyes, but in the eyes of the public.

You are dramatically overestimating "the public". If their TV told them to, they would fly to Russia and bring back Snowden's head on a plate. Anything that pleases their masters, pleases Boobus.

    May, 2014: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/m...o-a-jail-cell/

Edward Snowden: ‘I’d like to go home’

Edward J. Snowden, in an hour-long television interview broadcast Wednesday night, portrayed himself as a “patriot” who broke the law in an act of “civil disobedience” directed at “massive” constitutional violations by the U.S. government.

While Snowden said he would love to return to the United States from Russia, where he sought and obtained asylum last summer after leaking thousands of documents detailing the extent of the National Security Agency’s sprawling surveillance program, he said he did not want to “walk into a jail cell.”

That, he said, would serve as a “bad example for other people in government who see something happening, some violation of the Constitution, and think they need to say something about it.”

Surprise: Pieces of paper don't magically guarantee compliance with what is written on them. Pieces of paper can be ignored if people want to ignore them. They do that with the Bible and the Bible was breathed by God Himself. Does it surprise you that they'd do it with the constitution?

If he does come back. Just wait till he does then all the bad news about Russia would be over, this is a trap to get him.

My guess, TPTB do not want a trial and don't want a martyr or a political prisoner. Call their bluff, Ed! Is there a kickstarter for his legal defense fund? I've never kickstarted even a motorbike but I'd jump on this.
