This morning I found out one of my closest friends over the last 4 years has died. He committed suicide at some point over the weekend. This guy was a more than just a friend, he was a brother. We were in the same battalion in boot camp, the same ITB (Infantry Training Battalion) company and platoon. Once we hit the fleet we were in the same platoon. We went through two deployments together. We lived together before our second deployment. We often drank together out in town. In Afghanistan we were even in the same vehicle together. He's watched my ass as I have watched his.
22 veterans and active service members commit suicide a day. All the suicide briefs, and all the stories I have heard from senior guys...well they never hit home because quite frankly they never effected me. Today that $#@! means something. Today it means I lost somebody I really cared about.
Till Vahhalla my friend.
