Obama to propose new taxes in State of the Union

President Obama will ask Congress to hike capital gains taxes on wealthy Americans and impose a fee on large financial firms in Tuesday's State of the Union address, the White House announced Saturday.

The new taxes and fees, which the administration says will raise $320 billion over 10 years, would be used to finance $235 billion in new spending on community college tuition and targeted tax relief.

Senior administration officials said the proposals are designed to "raise wages and incomes for middle class families in the new economy" and that they'd "make the system more fair" by closing loopholes that primarily benefit top income-earners. Many Democrats have long sought higher taxes on capital gains, or income derived from investments, to make the tax code more progressive.

Of the estimated $320 billion in new revenue the president is seeking, $210 billion would come from a pair of adjustments to capital gains taxes. The first adjustment would close the so-called "trust fund loophole," a feature of the tax code that "lets the wealthy pass appreciated assets onto their heirs tax-free," according to the White House.

The second adjustment would raise capital gains taxes on the top 1 percent of income earners, currently at 15 percent, to 28 percent -- the same level it was at under former President Ronald Reagan, the White House is quick to point out.

An additional $110 billion would come from a new fee on highly leveraged financial services firms (firms bearing a heavy debt load) with more than $50 billion in assets. Roughly 100 firms would be targeted by the new fee, which a White House fact sheet argued would help "discourage excessive borrowing."

In return for those new taxes and fees, the president will ask Congress to set aside $60 billion to offer rebates to states that offer free community college tuition and an additional $175 billion in new tax benefits.

The president would offer a $500 second-earner tax credit that allows spouses in two-earner families to obtain a tax credit now available to the principle earner. That change could benefit 24 million couples.

He would also triple the child care tax credit to $3,000, a move that could benefit 5.1 million families with children under 5 and 6.7 million families overall.

And he'd offer a $2,500 tax credit for college students pursuing a full degree and consolidate the six federal college education tax benefits into only two. The tax credit could reach 8.5 million students and families, and the tax benefits through simplification could benefit 25 million families and students that claim those tax benefits, the White House estimates.

Finally, the president will also call for Congress to allow part-time workers to apply for and eventually receive retirement benefits through automatic enrollment in company-run savings plans. ‎This could benefit up to 30 million workers.

With the president's big speech looming, the White House is hoping the early announcement of the proposals could heighten the visibility of the address and gin up enthusiasm among groups sympathetic to his ideas.

"This is a clearer way for the president to present his vision," a senior administration official said Saturday.

Of course, the call to raise taxes on the wealthy and impose a fee on big financial institutions will likely go over like a lead balloon with Republicans, who now control both houses of Congress. The president has previously proposed hiking capital gains taxes, but the GOP has successfully thwarted any such action, arguing the move would discourage investment and put a crimp in economic growth.

Do You Deserve Community High Speed Internet? Obama Thinks So!

    ...

In what will be one of the more ambitious initiatives in President Obama’s SOTU, we are to learn of his plan to give the entire nation an Internet upgrade when he calls for the establishment of an improved infrastructure that will bring affordable high speed Internet to all Americans. In a 3:37 video posted to YouTube (embedded below), the president explains how much of the United States is woefully behind in delivering high speed Internet compared to Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Paris. In fact, only three U.S. cities deliver comparable speeds currently: Cedar Falls, Iowa; Kansas City, Missouri; and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

On Tuesday night, the president will make the case for the necessity of an improved and updated infrastructure by discussing how today’s slow Internet is actually a hindrance to those companies trying to get their footing in a changing business landscape. As we move toward a more digital world, companies unable to access the Internet due to slow connection speeds will likely lose business, lose customers, and lose market share.

Perhaps the best argument, (and one made very well in Fischer-Baum’s piece) is that the poor state of Internet connectivity in this nation is but one more signifier of a society that is becoming ever more polarized by the chasm that is wealth inequality. All of the mapped data sets show particularly fast connectivity figures in higher wealth areas while much of the country is left languishing in piteous broadband connectivity speeds, or worse, still using dial-up. For the nation responsible for the advent of the Internet, this should be seen as simply unacceptable. As the president noted in his Cedar Falls address, 98 percent of Americans are covered by providers offering the most basic broadband Internet connectivity. Unfortunately, availability of basic broadband Internet and affordability of basic broadband Internet are two entirely different matters. Approximately 45 million Americans currently do not have the ability or the means to purchase broadband connectivity. By urging a national initiative to drive the next-gen Internet, the president claims, as was the case for Cedar Falls, that the affordability of high speed Internet will be positively affected as well.

Raising taxes on the rich only works up until a certain point. After this point, the higher the tax rate, the less taxes that are actually collected. This is partly caused because the high tax rate causes companies to pack up and move elsewhere that the tax rate is lower. It is one of the reasons that so many companies have completely moved overseas and out of the USA. The end result is that by lowering the tax rate, more taxes are collected. The last president that did this was Kennedy with a tax rate on the rich of about 22% for Corporate Income Tax.

Other side of the coin is that it is never the rich that pay taxes at all. They just directly pass on those tax increases to the consumer by raising prices of products and goods. Raising taxes on the rich is always paid for by the poor. Lowering taxes can cause two results, higher tax revenue, and growth.

As usual nothing applies to me. No kids... So, don't get to steal to pay for them. YAY, single people don't exist, it's always about the dumbass "kids", and their stupid ass parents that have them then can't be bothered to pay for them.

There's a reason why the US Tax Code is ~75 THOUSAND PAGES

This 'WWE' Blue vs. Red on Taxes is just a convoluted game between to Mafioso groups vying to gain territory.

So, all those taxpayers without children or over 18 are not the recipients of child tax credits? ...it's a target for specific groups and specific voters, it's always premeditated operations with these CON MAN within the Washington DC beltway.

You hear and read the Tax Increase operations like clockwork on US media outlets, stating references like this, "Increase the capital gains tax back to the level that Ronald Regan had set it."

That's very disingenuous considering; ALL state taxes were much lower and many didn't even exist, ALL Americans could write off against earnings items interest on accounts like; Credit Cards, Auto Loans, etc and the individual was only paying 1% Social Security tax, and many many Federal TAXES/FEES didn't even exist back when Reagan was president.

The other misnomer is the repeated use of term "The Wealthy". And... it's the standard government Psych Ops of setting the level for a term. I kinda find it hilarious that I can quote Blow Hole Courtney Love's statement made on camera. After she had lost $20 Million over the years due to a number of reasons... The issue is not so much what people pay. The issue is that lower income people pay a higher percentage of their incomes in taxes. Wealthy pay a lot more tax, but it is a lower percentage of their income. Lots of disposable income in between.

Anyone think the Govt believes that it doesnt truly own everything? Try not paying taxes on just one thing, and they will come after everything and everything else.

If they put you in Prison for not paying taxes, it isnt to punish you. Not at all. Keeping you in Prison is far more expensive than if you were to pay your taxes, even for Private Prisons. The reason you are thrown in Prison for damn near everything is to make an example out of you, and thereby, keep everyone else in line. The thing is, raising taxes is not going to increase revenue. They know this damn well to be true. Once a tax rate hits a certain percentage, revenues begin to fall because people move from highly taxed areas to areas that suffer lower taxes. Lowering taxes that are too high actually increases tax revenue. But lets be real here. They do NOT need you to pay your taxes. All they need is the Buyer of Last Resort to print up more money, and the Spender of Last Resort, the Govt to blow what ever money it gets its hands on. You not paying taxes is a joke to them and has nothing to do with revenue or balancing their budgets. Making you pay your taxes is about keeping you out of their way.

This tax hike, even if it is on the rich, is about preventing Growth, and is another Nail in the Coffin of the non existent middle class.

As the president noted in his Cedar Falls address
Approximately 45 million Americans currently do not have the ability or the means to purchase broadband connectivity. By urging a national initiative to drive the next-gen Internet, the president claims, as was the case for Cedar Falls, that the affordability of high speed Internet will be positively affected as well.
Ok, being familiar with Cedar Falls, IA, I'm going to call this one out. First, the second snippet I quoted from the quote implies obomba actually made the SOTU address or some other speech there - does anyone know if that is true? Now, here's why obomba is making a big deal out of what's going on in Cedar Falls, IA - it's one of the biggest police state centers of the universe! Let me tell you all about Cedar Falls, IA. This is a place where cops spend their time walking into virtually every bar in town on the weekend nights, carding everyone in the place. During the week they send underage kids who want to be cops into gas stations and convenience stores to try to buy cigarettes. There is virtually no real crime there, so the city does the best that they can to manufacture it. Their police department even has a division that sits around online all day looking for thought crimes. I remember hearing something a few years back about some kind of new business tax and law to allow the fire department to invade people's businesses over phony fire inspections. Property taxes are about the highest in the state to support this level of extreme big brother big government. That's the type of place that Cedar Falls, IA is. Keep this in mind as I continue.

So what does this have to do with the internet, and what interests obomba so much about the place? Well, the one thing that makes the place supposedly "desirable" in the eyes of Iowans is that the utility rates are very low. The town is it's own utility company (and cable company also, IIRC). Cedar Falls has always made a point of keeping it's infrastructure as well-maintained and up to date as possible. So, when broadband internet first became available, the town decided to become it's own ISP as well. The only way to get high speed internet access (other than through satellite, which is a more recent development) is to buy the service from the city itself. I remember someone from Cedar Falls telling me that they used to download a lot of movies. That is, until the city suddenly shut their internet service off. They called to report the outage, and were told that the city had determined that they were committing a thought crime, and for this first offense, they were having their internet service shut off for 2 days. They were warned that if the city discovered them downloading anything again, they would permanently lose their ability to purchase high speed internet from the city, and would be charged with a crime and prosecuted in court.

So the town's snooping, extortion, and entrapment rackets even extend to your online activity. Not only does the town have a division of cops looking for thought crimes online, the city-owned ISP itself is literally watching everything you do online. THIS is what interests obomba so much. THIS is why he is suddenly holding this place up as a paragon of how the internet should be run: build the infrastructure with your tax dollars, and then use it to spy on you. THIS is the real agenda here, not the do-gooder socialist idea of cheap high speed internet for everyone. Now, I don't know about Chattanooga, but Kansas City is one of the first (if not the first) markets where google rolled out their FIOS service after verizon dropped the ball. Knowing google's level of respect for privacy, I don't believe that this is any coincidence that obomba is also holding Kansas City up as a shining example of what internet service should be.

Slaves are always made to pay for their own Chains.

Im sure the first issue that most people will want to address is the Speed of the internet services provided. Speed = Quality. And who has more money than a budding ISP? A city. But, who has more money than a city? Screw it, I'll cut to the chase, the people that PRINT the money. The Federal Reserve Bank is the Lender of Last Resort, while the Govt, any part of it, is also considered to be the Spender of Last Resort, which results in something we call an "economic cycle" for what ever that is worth. But to keep on topic, the City had more money to spend. It does so because it manufactures its crime (as stated above) and gets Federal Handouts, which come indirectly from the Bank in exchange for becoming an even more powerful Police State. The FED bought the Police State by offering money in exchange for compliance for some guideline laid forth by the Federal Government. Is it any suprise that a completely corrupt and paranoid Federal Govt would mandate that the Internet offered by the city be utilized as a form of Surveillance in exchange for bribing the City to Obedience?

Another Nail in the Coffin of Privacy

Governmet Run Internet is probably the worst idea I have heard of yet. I already posted a few threads about how if you use a VPN or TOR Network to try to retain any form of online anonymity, that you will be targetted to be hacked by the FBI. I do use a VPN, but my ISP isnt the FedGovISP. Actually, my internet is total $#@!. It doesnt even maintain a solid connection for 24 hours, let alone an hour. It isnt my VPN either, not that I fully trust them, but it is another hoop they have to jump through when if they want to find out somethign about me, I doubt it would be that difficult. The point is that with unlimited funding, the Govt will initially be able to provide faster internet, which many people will switch over to. But there is a problem. A "snag" if you will. When you sign up for service, you will be agreeing to their Terms of Service, which are non negotiable. Thus, you subject yourself to Unlimited Surveillance, and it wont be a 4th Amendment or Right Violation because you sign your name.

The TOS will be written in Legaleze which has absolutely zero bearing on the real world. Not that it will matter as none will be able to understand it anyway. If you try to dig through it, you'll start to notice an obvious pattern. The first pattern to recognize is the way that the word Permission is replaced with Right and Rights. No one can grant you ANY Right. Even if I wanted to, I can NOT grant you the Right to enter my home. That is an exchange of language and is how Rights are converted into Permissions, one of the many goals of the Communist Manifesto if I recall. What I can grant you is Permission to enter my home because I can grant Permission through my Property Rights, but can not grant you that which you already have. The next thing to observe in the TOS is that there is absolutely NO LIMIT as to what they can Dictate to you. Their abuse of the language of law is such that you are completely dehumanized and only the Corporate State has any recognizable authority, despite its obvious illegitimacy. Putting words on paper does not create Rights out of Thin Air. Nor can Rights be abolished and denied to any individual in the same manner. What they will do is get you to turn against yourself. Many will start to falsely believe that their Authority is Legitimate. It is not. Their TOS will most likely include "... any changes to the TOS" thereby granting them authority to SPY on you in any way shape or form they see fit. This is very similar to a Credit Card Company where you are tricked into agreeing that they can change the Terms of the Contract without your concent, and that is where it all falls apart. You are never offered to "agree" to the new terms of the contract, thus, it can not be valid. Contracts only live for the life of that contract and are unalterable, even if stated. Im sure some could debate that, but lets go a step further. Their legalization and word manipulation and by convincing you that you have zero authority through Contracts cant really be considered as valid or legitimate either as it is an agreement between you and a Non Human Party. I signed a contract with a rock, does the rock have any legitimate authority over me? No, it does not. Corporations and Governments are not human entities, despite every effort to make you think that not only should they be recognized as legitimate, but are superior to you as a human being.

It is all Smoke and Mirrors.

The validity of their authority over you lies completely in their ability to shape your Belief in the legitimacy of that authority. Any abuse of you what so ever, where you suffer loss of Life, Liberty, or ability to Pursue Happiness can not be considered Legitimate as so long as you do not Believe it. The Belief is not going to hold up in court. The Belief is not for the legal system, but a persons self realization that as a human you have inalienable rights. When you stop Believing in the false legitimacy of their actions, their system starts to crumble. The problem is that people are waking up. People everywhere around the world are far more awake than the stereotypical ignorant US citizen. And that has become a very clear and present danger to maintaining power as the upcomping paradigm shift unravels as the Status Quo has never been more threatened than it is right now at this very moment. And the only way for them to maintain their power is to first completely invade your Privacy on EVERY Level so that any public dissent will be crushed before it can be allowed to organize. When their Monopoly on Belief begins to falter, they will very quickly rationalize their actions as "preservation of our way of life" and sic the Enforcers of their Monopoloy on Violence against any and all dissenters.

The Status Quo has never been as threatened as much as it is right now, and like cornering any vicious animal, it is ready to attack. This also puts us at tremendous risk. People like you and me and anyone who even reads this is at risk, on both sides. This situation is a powder keg, and they are desperate to maintain their Total Control over you by completely violating your Privacy. What we stand to win is the permanent historical elimination of Enslavement through Fractional Reserve Banking. What we stand to lose is our very lives, and quite possibly all human life on Earth. This is a Paradigm Shift. Their system of control is faltering on every level. They are losing their power to control your Belief, your Money, and are only succeeding in Violence, but that will not last because to enforce their Violence they need both Money to pay Enforcers and Belief of the Enforcers. Their system is collapsing under its own weight and they damn well know it. Their real only hope is to deprive everyone of every shred of Privacy so that their Dissent does not spread like the wildfire that it has become. Obamas Tax BS is lip service to manufacture Belief in the value of their Money until a new system of Money can be implemented. It is either that, or to return to a previously functioning model of slavery where direct enforcement is always required, and they simply do not have the resources to do so. Sorry, I got off topic. Damn State of the Union Drinking Games, head is still fuzzy.

End result is that it is no suprise that Govt Internet will be exploited at every opportunity to SPY on any potential dissenters, regardless of how peaceful our intentions are.

It's deft politician speak. Notice in the transcript of the speech, he always says "working families" or some similar variation, but never does he say "American families". Why? Because he's not talking about American families. He's talking about some American families, Mexican illegals families, and every other family that is benefiting from the ongoing redistribution of American 'wealth' to foreign countries. That video is example of it. Most of that money being stolen is going to Mexico and other countries to build up THEIR economies on the back's of Americans, the people actually "responsible" for the debt being incurred or the bearers of the additional tax burdens. Always pay attention to exactly what they say instead of what you want to hear. Obama hopes you will fill in the mental image of what family you THINK he's talking about, not the ones he's actually talking about.

Just to add this: I remembered what the thing was with the Cedar Falls fire department. They and the city council were demanding the keys to every business in the city. They didn't want to break into anyone's business to respond to a fire alarm or fire call, if it occurred while the business was closed. They were planning to condemn businesses and not renew business licenses if the owners didn't turn in a set of keys to the fire department.

Are these the three cities google is doing for its internet test run?

Kansas City is but the other two are in Provo Utah and Austin Texas,, so I'm guessing there are more than three cities with comparable speeds.
