Pentagon to deploy 400-plus troops to train and equip Syrian opposition

The US military has announced it will send about 400 specialists and hundreds more “enabling forces” to train the rebel Syrian opposition as Washington takes its fight against the Assad government and Islamic State to a new level.

The Pentagon mission, expected to begin as early as March, envisions US specialists training Syrian opposition forces from military bases in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar, Cmdr. Elissa Smith, a Defense Department spokeswoman, was quoted by the Army Times as saying.

In addition to the 400 military specialists, so-called “enabling forces,” which are to serve as a security detail, will also accompany the trainers, Smith said.

The US-led coalition, which began its bombing campaign over Syrian territory against the jihadist forces of Islamic State [also known as ISIS, or ISIL] in September 2014, includes Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The Arab states will be expected to contribute troops to the US operation, which expects to train about 5,400 rebel forces each year for three years, according to Defense One, which first broke the news on the number of US specialists preparing for deployment.

News of the Pentagon’s mission to train Syrian rebels, some of whom are reported to be affiliated with terrorist organizations including al-Qaeda, has already attracted criticism from those who say the US military offensive against Islamic State forces in Syria, carried out without the consent of Damascus, is a thinly veiled effort to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power.

    They just don't $#@!ing learn.

My guess, is that they were already there.
    On Trump:
How conservative Republicans can continue to support this arrogant imposter—the man who brags about inflicting the world with the Covid mark of the beast; the man who said, “Take the guns first, go through due process second”; and the man who deliberately played and then set up Stewart Rhodes (of course, Stewart was all too eager to be Trump’s patsy) for an 18-year prison sentence—is truly beyond my comprehension.” Chuck Baldwin

Some were. This is more,,and publicly stated. (maybe?) (sent to Jordan?)

Anyone remember when we were sending advisers to Vietnam?

Over something the French were mucking around in? (and getting their asses kicked)

Where did the ISIS get their training and weapons? (funneled through Turkey)

    Are these not obvious questions?

Empire of Chaos... everyone of those "so-called" rebels would be labeled a terrorist in a honest world. Aiding in so many ways, known terrorists... CIA Libya & Egypt recruiting, training, and arming, was somewhat covert, but now it's just outright war against Syria.

    Train?

From what I have seen of this war, it's fairly primitive.

All the factions hide behind something and randomly fire AK's in each other's direction until one side gets scared and leaves the town they held. Throw in some pilfered artillery and aim in the general direction of an enemy, rinse and repeat.

Assad had some decent gear at the start of the war, put now are reduced to about the level of IS and the opposition.

This will grind on for years unless Russian or US are on the ground. Not that I want that.

In an honest world, nobody would be labeled a terrorist. The word is inherently dishonest and subjective.

No biggie, it is just a "five year problem" being create by neocons.

Sort of like "ten year problem" that was created in Afghanistan in 70s that unfortunately ended up being 40 year problem and counting.

Bad news for modern women of Syria though and all the population.

For the billionth time on here. Reagan met with the Mujhadeen fighters against the Russians not the Taliban, there was no Taliban during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. Nobody in that picture has ever been confirmed to have gone on to be a Taliban member. The founding fathers is a misquote. Reagan said that about the Contras in Nicaragua, not the Mujhadeen in Aghanistan.

Are you saying no mujahadin joined the taleban? OF course that is silly, so how many, do you think did? 10%? 20? Eventually maybe 80% by now?

The various tribal leaders and religious leaders became the Taliban. They became that with US help and backing.

Update - US troops training Syrian ‘moderates’ could top 1,000 – Pentagon

The Pentagon announced that a mission to train the “moderate” Syrian opposition may involve over 1,000 US troops. The first soldiers may flow into the region in a month, while the trained fighters may return to Syria to “fight ISIS” by the end of 2015.

The earlier announced number suggested 400 pairs of US boots on the ground in countries neighboring Syria, where the training will take place. However, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters in a press briefing on Friday that the total number "could approach 1,000."

"It might even exceed that. I can't rule that out," Kirby added.

Kirby also announced that trainers from other countries could join the effort to help tackle the Islamic State threat in Syria.

The $500 million training plan for Syrian insurgents was first proposed by the Pentagon in June last year. Congress first approved the measure in September for three months, and last month has extended the program through 2016.

At this point, I consider these soldiers disgraceful for obeying. This is just too late in the game of the "war on terrorism" for these people to not know whats happening, its an oath they swore to uphold and they DO HAVE THE OBLIGATION to refuse an order that is in direct threat to the u.s. and unconstitutional. The fact that syrian rebels are declared as "enemy combatants" since 2001 (yes its still on the books that syrian rebel/alqaeda are enemies) . ...this would be the definition of treason according to law and military operation.

    This is a tar baby.
The United States is going to be training Sunnis to fight ISIS. They are going to be training them to use US weapons, (defense contractors need their cut), to fight ISIS. Many of the ISIS fighters now are former "Sons of Iraq", Sunnis, who Petreaus paid off when it was clear "the surge" was failing. No matter how many they train, some will fight without a cause, most will flee, but the best fighters, the most passionate, will find the cause ISIS.

Just like ISIS driving around in humveees and MRAPS. Most of these guys will turn to ISIS, and know exactly how to use the captured weapons.

And so America will slap its hand in the middle eastern tar again, trying to get the other out.

2003 America. You were wrong. You made the wrong choice, and now you will pay for the rest of your history.

McCain is going to head over there playing a few rounds of video poker while inflight, point out and meet up with all the good guy rebels, hand them guns get them trained, and then have them kill the bad terrorists.

McCain can tell the difference don't you know?

You see McCain knows about war, he's a war hero, he will make sure everything goes OK.

They have learned. They are successful. Just two years ago Americans were increasingly turning against the GWOT. Even republicans were calling the Iraq war a mistake. The war in Afghanistan had lost support as well. People were wanting their freedoms back. Obama and Clinton wanted to do "regime change" in Syria but the American people weren't buying it. Fox news was telling the American people "We need to ally with Al Qaeda to defeat Assad" but the American people weren't buying it. So ISIS came along. The Iraqi army stood down. The Syrian "opposition" we were supporting openly started working with ISIS. ISIS started beheading people and posting videos for no apparent reason. And viola! All of a sudden 80% of the American people are no longer "war weary". They got a formula that works every time. The Charlie Hebdo BS is just icing in the cake. Hell, even people here at RPF are starting to buy into the propaganda. They are learning. Just like a killer virus learns how to be more virulent. It doesn't care that it's ultimately killing off the host it needs for its own survival. It always assumes there will be other hosts to feed on. The ones who are not learning are the hosts.
