Nice post! The only problem with this is that it only shows things at the county level, and doesn't include municipal level purchases. That said, it's quite interesting. Of the two counties I'm thinking about purchasing land in, one isn't listed at all, and the other hasn't bought anything that you could outright say only belongs in the hands of the military (bomb robot, tool kit, pickup truck, etc).

After seeing a hometown neighboring county show up as having purchased an MRAP did a google search here is the justification.

    ...

"We've never seen Ocean County or Monmouth County as war zones. These are not war zones. These are not battlefields," said Ari Rosmarin, Public Policy Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, which earlier this month urged the Bergen County Sheriff's Office to withdraw a request to the Pentagon for two mine-resistant vehicles. "The more our law enforcement agencies shift thinking of themselves as warriors, I think we're going to see more and more troubling consequences in communities."

That is not the view from the ranks of local police.

Middletown received its mine-resistant vehicle last October after losing three new police patrol cars in Tropical Storm Irene, and suffering heavy damage to two five-ton cargo trucks it had used to rescue victims of superstorm Sandy, Sgt. William Colangelo said.

"This is the vehicle that's going to take us into higher winds, higher water," he said.

Not sure if this is the case here but each military branch's books are so cooked that they cannot be audited. They are given X amount of dollars. Much of it is "lost." Items are then assigned an arbitrary number so in their books it shows that they spent the X amount of dollars given to them. Toilet seats might be said to cost $800, a screw driver- three thousand, a coffee pot for $700 or a single bolt for $2,400. I would not be surprised if the figures reflected were cases of this. That is, cases of embezzlement, money laundering, etc.

It's only when investigative journalists start combing through what they said they spent on this or on that that these discrepancies are found. But you have to figure, we are talking of $500,000,000,000. A million could be "lost" (and in fact they've lost many multiple millions of dollars multiple times) and no one would really notice. Kind of amazing when you think about it. Even more amazing people want to give them more money or would have an aneurysm at the thought of cutting even a penny from the DoD.

My county "only" got ~200 AR's - full auto, no doubt. 6 pages.

78 pages for the whole state.

The white house is claiming that only 4% of the program is weapons and that the vast majority is "office equipment". Outside of the 10 desk lamps and the coffee pot, I don't see any "office equipment" on the lists people have posted. Can anyone find the 96% of donated equipment that is "office equipment"?

The bulk of the equipment transferred from federal sources to LEAs is fairly routine—
office furniture, computers and other technological equipment, personal protective equipment
and basic firearms. But federal agencies also transfer, or fund the purchase of, military
equipment, including high powered weapons and tactical vehicles. Although such tactical
equipment constitutes a small percentage of the total material that flows from the federal
government to LEAs, it is nonetheless substantial. For example, under the DOD 1033 program,
only 4% of the property provided to LEAs last year was “controlled property2
    ” (property listed
on the Department of State Munitions Control List or Department of Commerce Control List).

However, this 4% translates into 78,000 pieces of controlled equipment transferred from DOD to
LEAs. To date, approximately 460,000 pieces of controlled property are currently in the
possession of LEAs across the country.

Department of State Munitions Control List:

    Department of Commerce Control List:

Someone is dyslexic. 96% of this crap is on these lists!

equipment, including high powered weapons and tactical vehicles.

Someone is dyslexic. 96% of this crap is on these lists!
