NY: Astorino Takes Most of the State, but Loses to Cuomo

There are only two things that really matter in NY politics at the moment... FRACKING and NYSAFE GUN CONTROL

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo ran for a second term as the first state leader in decades who paid attention to Upstate New York.
But on Tuesday, Upstate voters did not love Cuomo back, according to unofficial returns.
Instead, Cuomo won only eight Upstate counties while Republican Rob Astorino won 42 counties, with 99 percent of the vote counted. Four years ago, Cuomo won 37 Upstate counties, leaving Republican Carl Paladino only 13.
Cuomo clearly won the popular vote on Tuesday. He beat Astorino 54 percent to 41 percent. That's not as wide a margin as four years ago, when Cuomo beat Paladino 63 percent to 33 percent statewide.
This year, Cuomo won by depending on his Democratic base. He won most of the state's urban centers: New York City, Buffalo, Syracuse and Albany.
But Cuomo lost ground among suburban and rural Upstate voters -- some of whom had supported him four years ago. He lost Monroe County, home to Rochester.
Upstate New York's boundaries are not officially defined. For this story, any counties north of Orange and Dutchess counties is considered Upstate.

'We endorse the idea of voluntarism; self-responsibility: Family, friends, and churches to solve problems, rather than saying that some monolithic government is going to make you take care of yourself and be a better person. It's a preposterous notion: It never worked, it never will. The government can't make you a better person; it can't make you follow good habits.' - Ron Paul 1988
