Voters narrowly rejected the legalization of medical marijuana in Florida on Tuesday after a surge of ads saying the ballot initiative was riddled with holes.
The Associated Press declared that Amendment 2 had failed as it did not appear it would reach the necessary 60 percent to pass. It had about 57 percent support with nearly all precincts reporting Tuesday night.

"Floridians defeated Amendment 2 because they had the benefit of both sides of the story — and the truth is that Amendment 2's loopholes made it nothing more than de facto legalization of marijuana," said Sarah Bascom, a spokeswoman for Vote No on 2.

The campaign for medical marijuana was among the most expensive ballot measures in the country, with millions spent on both sides of the debate.
Opponents spent more than $6.2 million to spread their message that Amendment 2 was riddled with holes and would result in a system where marijuana was medical in name only. They had the backing of Sheldon Adelson, a Las Vegas casino magnate who gave the bulk of the money raised by the Drug Free Florida Committee, which funded the Vote No on 2 campaign. Those warnings resonated with enough voters to defeat the initiative.

"I truly think that it's a health and safety issue," said 68-year-old Veora Little of Naples, who voted against Amendment 2. "It's the looseness of the law and the ability of children to get yet another controlled substance in a very liberal way."

At forums around the state, though, it appeared backers of the ballot initiative had momentum on their side. Supporters far outnumbered opponents at events, and polls — for a time — seemed to mirror that. In July, Quinnipiac University found that 88 percent of Florida voters supported medical marijuana, but later polls suggested that was an outlier.
People United for Medical Marijuana, which ran the United for Care effort in support of Amendment 2, spent more than $6.5 million in the past year to spread a message of compassion for suffering patients. It had significant financial backing from Orlando trial attorney John Morgan, who employs Charlie Crist. Crist, the Republican-turned-Democrat former governor who unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Rick Scott for his old position, said he favored the amendment, a sentiment echoed by many Floridians.
"It helps people that are sick," said Anna Solver, 39, of Clearwater, who supported the ballot measure. "It helps them with the pain."

California voters were the first to legalize medical marijuana in 1996, and 22 other states and the District of Columbia have since followed. Earlier this year, Florida lawmakers passed legislation to approve use of low-potency marijuana for certain medical conditions, but Amendment 2's supporters said a broader provision was needed to help people of varying illnesses.
Morgan vowed to continue his fight for medical marijuana, noting that Amendment 2 had more support than any winning candidate for governor or president in Florida over the past few decades. In an email to supporters, he said his push would return to the state Legislature.
"This fight does not end tonight. This fight begins tonight. Tomorrow we go to Tallahassee," he said. "Tallahassee politicians can ignore polls and ignore activists. They cannot ignore a clear majority of Florida voters."

'We endorse the idea of voluntarism; self-responsibility: Family, friends, and churches to solve problems, rather than saying that some monolithic government is going to make you take care of yourself and be a better person. It's a preposterous notion: It never worked, it never will. The government can't make you a better person; it can't make you follow good habits.' - Ron Paul 1988

I was really hoping this would pass. I guess we'll go at it next time, and without John Morgan too.

It won't take very long to get them home but it won't be overnight either but Iraq says they can't stay and they are coming home just like Trump said.

Surely it got more than 34.2%.

Maybe if they got high more often they'd be competent at math.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

no worries...when these old retired Florida residents start to get cancer, they'll be on the street buying some good ganja from Rafael near their local beach parking lot...its all good. Black Market will survive, and the Florida tax coffers will suffer...
