Major bummer. Only real bright spot is the fact that no one got hurt. I'll bet they're going to be picking up pieces of this thing for about ten square miles.
agree on the nozzle, though it also looked like there was a gasket blowout between the first and second stage - though that doesn't really make sense. The initial and primary explosion was definitely from the base.

Sanctions may have caused a few critical engine mount "through bolts" to go missing... by accident.

it had a primitive computer on board and there were terrestrial computers that plotted it and supported it.

That said, my dad was an aerospace engineer and yeah - slide rule...

Hell yes they do. Who do you think made up most of NASA in the early days? Google "Operation Paperclip" for the details.

NASA should set up a "kick-starter" or "gofundme."

Did someone check the WIFI prior to launch!?! Coulda been terrorists..

So they delayed the launch for one day because of a mysterious boat, then the next day the rocket blows up. Nothing to see here.

    In New Zealand:

Air Traffic Control is a private company run on user fees
The DMV is a private non-profit
Rescue helicopters and ambulances are operated by charities and are plastered with corporate logos
The agriculture industry has zero subsidies

The ridiculous thing is that they even thought they could sneak that past RPFs.

Now the only question is who was on that 26 foot, four knot sailboat that blew up that rocket the day after they moseyed by oh so innocently.

    CIA?Bilderberg?Monsanto?Rothschilds?Skull and Bones?

I have no doubt that RPFs will get to the bottom of it.That's what we're good for these days.

    Sounds cute doesn't it ?

In reality rockets, especially big ones sometimes blow up. Someone probably made a stupid mistake somewhere. I think the low volume of rockets has something to do with this. The first cars and airplanes weren't all that good or safe either. Things have to be developed and mistakes have to be made in order to learn from them. All pretty logical stuff imo. This was only the fifth flight of this particular (type) rocket.

The stupid mistake was using old "off the shelf" Soviet-era rocket engines. Elon Musk of SpaceX said as much two years ago. Orbital Sciences bought a bunch of old engines from Russia that had been in storage since the early 70s, and stuffed them into rocket bodies and then hoped for the best. Two of these engines failed catastrophically in earlier tests over the past year or two.

confirmed: ISS keeps 4-6 months of reserve supplies on hand at all times.

Russia has offered to do a launch to get supplies up there.

What I find interesting is the fact that the government had some sort of classified project on board, and apparently there was quite a scramble to get it back in the aftermath of the explosion. What's more, civilians are being told the debris is "hazardous" and are being told to stay away:

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/28403...aft-cargo.html

Shortly after the incident, an unidentified official on the range controller’s audio channel noted that the cargo contained “class-5 crypto” and so the launch site must be kept secure...

“It was a rocket and it had hazardous materials on board that people should not be looking for or wanting to collect as souvenirs,” said Frank Culbertson, Orbital’s executive vice president, during a Tuesday evening news conference....

Investigators are asking members of the public to call 757-824-1295 should they find any debris.
Does anyone know what "Class 5 Cryptograpic equipment" is? Obviously, cryptographic equipment has to do with encryption and encoding. Interesting that they're doing space experiments with it.

The only reference I could find for "class 5" crypto was in an after-action report from the USS Hornet after the Battle of Midway:

    http://www.history.navy.mil/docs/wwii/mid5.htm

    3. It was at about this time that several despatches were sent to the Task Force Commander in high command ciphers. It is strongly recommended that carriers be issued a class 5 cryptographic allowance; these ships may well become separated during continuous air operations and the carrier commanding officers require all available information. The receipt of this information will obviate the necessity for a large part of the visual traffic so difficult to deliver by semaphore from the Task Force Commander to the carriers.

The Russians don't seem to have a problem with Russian rocket engines. Perhaps our rocket scientists aren't as smart as they think they are.

The Russians have an unmatched reliability record.

Orbital uses the Russians engines because there are no American engines that match them for performance, even 50 years later.

If memory serves, the ridiculous sanctions against Russia left an exception for rocket engines. If I were Russia, if the Amerikans are going to boycott me for everything except one item, I would serve up a good one.

The difference is that they sweep their CATO's under the rug and the media does not report on them.

We are so blessed to live in a country with a free media that is not afraid to report on the failures of government.
