Sore on forehead that wouldn't heal

Had a sore on my forehead that wouldn't heal? Had it frozen off a couple of times over the course of a couple years and it always came back. I finally had it cut out and biopsied and it came back and the doctor told me that it was basal cell carcinoma.
I wasn't surprised at all. I've lost count the number of times I've been sunburned. I've worked outdoor jobs most of my life. I've used a tanning bed a few times. I have naturally pale skin (I'm half Irish). Until recently I never wore a hat outside and the list continues.

Back in the day people would be outside all day working in the fields and they didn't have the rates of sunburn we have today. They were outside because they had to be not because they wanted to be. They didn't care about having a tan physique they cared about getting enough food to survive. They didn't work with their shirts off. The were smart they wore hats, long sleeve shirts, kept their necks covered, and most of the men had beards.

If I could go back and give a younger version of myself a piece of advise it would be: never get sunburned.
I believe sun exposure is just like anything else good in moderation.

Here is a interesting video seems like some valid points are being brought up.

I'm sorry that you have been diagnosed with cancer.

I tend to be on the side that thinks skin cancers have increased with the use of sun screen. Or maybe it's like autism where the diagnosis has just gotten better?

I had a squamus cell carcinoma on my head which wasn't healing until I got treatment. I had plenty of vitamin D- both from supplements and sun exposure. It doesn't prevent it. Sunscreen does.

Being Irish and using a tanning bed is probably the worst decision ever.

I agree with a lot of what you say but still, I'm sure sunburns were an occasional thing in the old days. Maybe not so much when travel and immigration was less easy. My brother is of German descent and lives in Texas. He does all of those things you listed from "back in the day". He has melanoma.

thank you, lots of guys in my business have this, tops of the ears, nose, forearms and the backs of our hands seem to be the worst places..

I stopped using sunscreen mostly because it clogs my pores and gets in my eyes. I will soon be 55 and don't have it .. yet.
mostly I just hide out from the sun as much as I can.

I wish I would have started sooner, after seeing what is happening to other guys..

Just don't put the sunscreen on your forehead or next to your eyes and wear a hat. Sweat is what gets it into your eyes. (If you are in the sun a lot, it also helps prevent premature aging).

My husband is Canadian and has super fair, almost albino skin. He gets sunburned from fluorescent light and from no more than 10 minutes in the sun. Skin cancer is a constant worry. He wears SPF 60 sunscreen he gets in Canada. Hope you caught it quickly and wishing you the best for a full recovery.

I am convinced more people get skin cancer because of the chemicals that are in sunscreen baking into their skin.

Local application of frankincense essential oil may provide a non-surgical treatment alternative, with no or minimal side effect for carcinoma in situ, minimally invasive carcinoma and pre-cancerous conditions such as actinic keratosis. A study with larger number of patients with both squamous-cell carcinoma and BCC is required to confirm our current findings.

Tamanu (pronounced TAW-man-oo) oil — derived from the large, blonde nuts of the Ati tree — has been used by natives of South East Asia and the Pacific Islands for centuries as a cure-all for any kind of skin problem.

Japanese researchers at Meijo University found that several isolated chemical compounds in tamanu inhibit skin tumor production.

I've got a small unhealed rough spot boo on my forehead too. It's been there, off and on, for years. It comes and it goes. Probably just a few too many childhood sunburns. Who knew back then? Good luck with your's. Hang in there.

The good thing about skin cancer is that it can be treated surgically with a high rate of success. Even melanoma, if you are vigilant and catch it early. Had my own basal cell carcinoma removed. Not a big deal. But then facial scars actually improve my appearance. That may not be true for everyone.

Based on my own experience, I disagree. My cancer was on the forehead where I did not use sunscreen. Where I do use sunscreen I have no problems.

    From one of your links:
Our results are probably related mainly to earlier sunscreens of low SPF.

Thanks to everyone fore the well wishes and information.
I'm in the process of gathering as much information I can.
I'm still trying to decide what is fact and what is fiction.
Right now I'm trying to find a "natural" sunscreen.

Drinking carrot juice can protect your skin from the sun
    http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthr...n-from-the-sun

    Natural Homemade Sunscreen Ingredients:

1/2 cup almond or olive oil (can infuse with herbs first if desired)
1/4 cup coconut oil (natural SPF 4)
    1/4 cup beeswax
2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide (This is a non-nano version that won’t be absorbed into the skin. Be careful not to inhale the powder). This makes a natural SPF of 20+ or more can be added.)
Optional: up to 1 teaspoon Red Raspberry Seed Oil
Optional: up to 1 teaspoon Carrot Seed Oil
Optional: up to 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
Optional: 2 tablespoons Shea Butter (natural SPF 4-5)
Optional: Essential Oils, Vanilla Extract or other natural extracts to suit your preference

    How to Make Natural Sunscreen

Combine ingredients except zinc oxide in a pint sized or larger glass jar. I have a mason jar that I keep just for making lotions and lotion bars, or you can even reuse a glass jar from pickles, olives, or other foods.
Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat.
Put a lid on the jar loosely and place in the pan with the water.
As the water heats, the ingredients in the jar will start to melt. Shake or stir occasionally to incorporate. When all ingredients are completely melted, add the zinc oxide, stir in well and pour into whatever jar or tin you will use for storage. Small mason jars (pint size) are great for this. It will not pump well in a lotion pump!
Stir a few times as it cools to make sure zinc oxide is incorporated.
Use as you would regular sunscreen. Best if used within six months.

I don't know the answer. I know that religious use of sunscreen did not prevent my cancer. So I stopped using it. Now I make sure I get plenty of vitamin d3 and avoid excess exposure. I did not tell my dermatologist that I stopped using sunscreen, but he thinks my skin looks good with fewer actinic keratosis lesions. Just an anecdote and not science. Science suggests that more sun exposure increases risk of melanoma but also that the more sun exposure decreases the mortality from melanoma. So it would seem that on the one hand sun exposure causes more cancer but also helps the body develop a defense against cancer. I think the jury is still out on this one.
