Obama: Ebola 'SWAT teams' to respond to infections

Obama said Americans need to understand

how Ebola is and isn't spread,

and used himself as an example:

"I shook hands with, hugged and kissed [] the nurses at Emory because of the valiant work that they did treating in one of the patients. They followed the protocols, they knew what they were doing, and I felt perfectly safe doing so."

'We endorse the idea of voluntarism; self-responsibility: Family, friends, and churches to solve problems, rather than saying that some monolithic government is going to make you take care of yourself and be a better person. It's a preposterous notion: It never worked, it never will. The government can't make you a better person; it can't make you follow good habits.' - Ron Paul 1988

She was concerned enough to tell them several times and yet still chose to expose others because some genius looks at a chart and says well, not quite hot enough yet but you're almost there. She is ultimately the one responsible for her irresponsible behavior that poses an enormous risk to all she exposed. From the initial leaving of the area, to the ultimate flight home when she KNEW she was running a fever. Now, like everyone else that seems to be connected to this mess, sounds like someone wants to pass the buck back to the CDC.

"contact" is the CDC version of congress or NSA speak. It means within 3 feet. You can get it a lot farther away via droplet spread.

over 260 health care workers following the WHO/MSF protocols have died.

When they transported the second nurse to Emory tonight the ambulance had a 14 car escort with emergency lights flashing. None of the previous 3 patients transported to Emory got anything like that. Obviously, the risk of disease transmission is directly related to the number of TV news camera's in the area.

I'm honestly curious, why hasn't a Republican Senator, Democrat Senator, or SOMEBODY in DC like a Representative, introduced legislation to increase TSA funding already? We need to double down on this, and make sure that we are safe by expanding the government where it works best.

I think the CDC can use this as evidence they need more funding, because the experts are just stretched so thin right now, they don't know what to do.
I think the TSA can do it, most definitely, because of the increased risk of people on flights. They need thermal scanners at airports for EVERYBODY, that will tell body temperatures.
The NSA can make sure to hop on this extra funding train as well, because well, if they had the necessary resources in place when she placed those CALLS (multiple calls!?) to the CDC, they might have intercepted one/all of them and been able to dispatch a SWAT team. That can be used for a future reason.
The Border Patrol can make the case they need more funds, to prevent Ebola from the southern border coming over.
The MIC can most certainly pitch for more funds for better HAZMAT suits, mobile decontamination units, and some sort of super-sonic-ultra-light-wave-cannon to kill the Ebola virus.
And, the healthcare industry can almost certain appeal for more funds, because they haven't been making enough milking patients for the last 3 decades with unnecessary procedures, and need more government funds to buy proper equipment and build new wings in hospitals just for these type of problems.

EBOLA COULD REVIVE THE ECONOMY! Somebody better get in on this now. Hillary is probably preparing her speech on it as I type this.

Im pretty sure you're being facetious, however I did read an article earlier touting that the gov't currently has the lowest budget deficit since 2008 so that would make sense as a fabricated method to require immediate government spending. Low deficit spending can't be allowed except right before election day....then it can go back through the roof.

Sadly, I have been expecting it.
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

    Interesting...

... was out tonight and talked with a local Doc of a local chain of medical offices around the area... they had a meeting recently (last few days) and they think (the whole group at large) that 30% of the world population will be effected by this eventually. (30% mortality, or 30% sick with 70% of that sick group in the mortality rate - I missed the exact context.) Either way, they are worried and have already decided they will shut down their offices / facilities when it starts getting bad locally to prevent concentrated hot spots.

Said you spew out both ends uncontrollably... I jokingly said someone who gets infected should pay a visit to congress and spew there... Clean out a good 30%+ of that group....

"Let the government handle it" was the phrase used by them - the local medical group - and "quarantine everyone" was the general message. The movie "Outbreak" was referenced as the the probable landscape of our near future....

    Fun times ahead....

There are only 19 level 4 bio-containment beds in the whole of the United States…and four in the UK
    http://undergroundmedic.com/?p=6990#....nWrMXNWZ.dpuf

The UK is well set for an Ebola outbreak (sarcasm alert) We have TWO isolation units, but one is getting ‘redeveloped’ so it’s not available right now. Called High Security Infectious Diseases Units there are two in the country, each capable of taking two patients. One is at The Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead North London, the other, the one getting a bit of a make-over, is at The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, up in the north-east of England.

Four level 4 bio-containment beds between 69,000,000 people

In the US there are 4 units geared up to handle Ebola. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, has 3 beds. Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, has 10 beds. Emory Hospital, Atlanta has 3 beds and St Patricks Hospital, Missoula has 3 beds (source)

19 level four biocontainment beds for 317,000,000 people

I think we just found out why the government(s) are under-playing the situation. They simply do not have the facilities to cope with even a small outbreak. They are, in fact in exactly the same position as the dirt-poor hospitals in West Africa…there are not enough facilities to stop the spread of the disease if it gets out. The quality of care is better, but the availability of containment most likely isn’t.

I am sure ‘regular’ isolation units will be pressed into use but they are not designed to handle level 4 biohazards, they are nowhere near as secure medically speaking, as biocontainment units.

A couple of days ago I explained how exponential spread works. You can read that article here if you like. As a quick recap. Once a disease is at the point where every carrier infects 2 more people,(exponential spread) it will continue until it:

    A) runs out of hosts

    B) is stopped by medical science or

    C) mutates into something less harmful.

What follows will show you how woefully inadequately our governments have prepared for something as lethal as Ebola.

In the flu pandemic of 1918-1920 28% of Americans were infected with the disease…try to remember I am talking numbers here not HOW disease spreads or any medical similarities between diseases, 625,000 Americans lost their lives out of some 29,400,000 infections. The population of the United States at that time was 105,000,000 people. (source)

Fast forward to today. If that flu pandemic had hit the United States in 2014, when the population stands at 317,000,000 people 88,760,000 people would have been infected and 2,130,240 of them would have died.

Now, let’s try this with Ebola. I have picked Liberia just because it is in the news due to the Thomas Duncan case.

Liberia has a population of 4,290,000 people, as of the latest figures there have been 3692 cases of Ebola, this represents 0.0086% of the population.Of those infections, 1998 people have died that’s a fatality rate of 54%. (source)

If that same infection and death rate were applied to the United States Ebola would infect 269,000 people and of those 156,281 would die.

Now, if as doctors and scientists fear the basic reproduction rate rises to 2 in Liberia the numbers change very quickly. Using the mean average incubation time of 9 days it would take around 13 weeks for the entire population of Liberia to become infected. (10 doublings starting with 3692 = just under the population of Liberia. This multiplied by 9 days gives us 90 days which divided by 7 gives 12.85 weeks.) Of the 4,290,000 people infected 2,316,000 would lose their lives.

This is just Liberia, not the other affected countries in West Africa.

Translated to an equivalent outbreak in the United States, where the basic reproduction rate is also 2, the numbers are horrifying. Starting with patient zero it would take around 245 days, 35 weeks for every person in the United States to become infected. Of those 17,118,000 people would die. (27.17 doublings x 9 days = 245 days =35 weeks)

Please remember the figures for Liberia are pulled from the CDC website, the percentages are correct. The scenario for the United States was based on exactly the same parameters as for Liberia…a like for like comparison.

The CDC could be spending their time educating people, advising people to stock up, get ready for the possibility of staying in their homes. Self imposed isolation, or if need be state imposed isolation, that may last for an extended time period may become a reality. They’re not doing it though are they? They are sprouting figures and applying them to West Africa, and they can’t even get that right. They are saying that there could be 1.4 deaths in West Africa in a worst case scenario. When actually applying the figures they supplied with some simple mathematics we can see that 1.4 million deaths is a gross understatement.

Even a basic reproduction rate of 1.7, the latest figure for Liberia it will only take around 30 weeks to get to the same point as the above scenario, over 2,000,000 dead.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that the UK government is any better, if anything they are worse, they don’t even try to do the maths. Most of them went to Eton (a very expensive school that churns out politicians) so it’s unlikely they would be capable of it even if they wanted to. You only have to look at our national finances to see they are no good at sums. They send out press briefings that there will be an emergency COBRA meeting, do you have any clue what that stands for? Let me enlighten you, Cabinet Office Briefing Room A. COBRA is not an emergency planning group, it’s an effing office.

Although I am loathed to say it, it’s time that our governments started worrying about the facilities at home rather than worrying about the facilities abroad. Stopping the disease in Africa does not mean we are out of the woods. There are so many unreported cases, people turned away from medica facilities in West Africa that nobody has the slightest idea how many cases of Ebola are actually out there. The porous borders of the region mean that people move around without the controls that are usually exercised in the west. There has to be a travel ban on non-US citizens entering the United States from these areas, the same applies from the UK.

Border control has to be improved in both countries if we have any hope of halting the spread of this terrible disease. The west is going to be the destination for anyone from Ebola hit areas that can afford to make their way from Africa. Many West Africans have contacts in the west who will help them get out, and shelter them when they arrive. As harsh as it seems this has to be stopped, it’s time for governments to put their own citizens first. Repatriation of your own is one thing, risking millions of lives at home because won’t man up and prevent foreigners entering is quite another.

    Take Care

    Liz

Travel bans already going on in Africa. Even Kenya is banning travel from the Ebola hot zone. The irony is South Korea stopped its flights to Kenya.

Anticipate travel disruption due to Ebola-related flight bans, health screening measures

The authorities in several countries have implemented entry restrictions to curtail the spread of Ebola from countries that have Ebola cases, while air carriers have restricted flights or modified schedules. Health screening has also been implemented at ports of entry and departure in various countries throughout West Africa and is being introduced in Europe and North America countries as well.

Specific details of restrictions such as those listed below are difficult to verify and subject to change, while the implementation of state-imposed entry conditions can vary. Similarly, flight schedules may change at short notice. Travellers departing from countries affected by an outbreak of Ebola should seek itinerary-specific guidance from the relevant authorities on screening procedures and documentation requirements. They should also reconfirm the status of flights before setting out and allow additional time during arrival and departure to pass through enhanced medical screening.

    Entry restrictions

Kenya on 10 October announced that it had closed the Suam border crossing (Trans-Nzoia county) with Uganda due to reports of an Ebola-related death in Bukwo district (Uganda). Earlier, the Kenyan authorities on 19 August suspended entry of passengers travelling from and through Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, excluding health professionals supporting efforts to contain the outbreak and Kenyan citizens.

Cape Verde on 9 October announced that it would now deny entry to non-resident foreigners coming from countries with ‘intense Ebola transmission' – Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia - or who have been to those countries in the previous 30 days.

Mauritius on 8 October banned entry to all travellers who have visited Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia, Senegal and Congo (DRC) in the last two months, rather than just citizens of those countries, as was the case previously. The authorities have announced that entry restrictions for travellers from Senegal and Nigeria will be lifted on 10 October and 17 October respectively, if no further cases of Ebola infection are reported.

Seychelles on 8 October suspended entry to travellers who have visited Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Nigeria or Congo (DRC) 28 days prior to their journey, with the exception of Seychellois citizens.

Côte d'Ivoire has reopened in early October its borders with Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Equatorial Guinea is denying entry to travellers whose journeys originated in countries affected by Ebola.

Cameroon on 17 September reopened its borders to travellers from Senegal. An 18 August ban remains in place on travel from Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states – Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe – have stated that travellers coming from Ebola-affected countries (according to the World Health Organisation, WHO) would be monitored for 21 days and that travel to member countries for any gatherings would be discouraged. The SADC provided no details as to how member countries will carry out the associated screening and follow-up and it is likely that countries will have individual processes. There are also reports that some countries require health documentation for entry. Travellers are advised to contact the embassy or health ministry of their destination country to clarify their individual circumstances and prepare their trips accordingly.

South Sudan has placed a ban on travellers coming from Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia or Congo (DRC), or those who have travelled to those countries in the preceding 21 days. According to the health ministry, entry of travellers from Nigeria depends on their travel history in that country and whether they have visited Ebola-affected areas.

Namibia's foreign ministry on 11 September announced that foreigners travelling from countries affected by Ebola would be prohibited from entering the country.

Gambia on 1 September suspended entry of persons who have visited Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone or Nigeria in the 21 days prior to travel. Those travelling indirectly from any of the aforementioned countries to Gambia via another country also come under this measure.

Côte d'Ivoire announced on 23 August that it had closed its land borders with Guinea and Liberia.

Gabon stated on 22 August that it is restricting the issuance of entry visas to travellers from Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria on a case-by-case basis.

Rwanda, according to the US Department of State on 22 August, has banned entry to travellers who have visited Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone in the 22 days prior to travel.

Senegal on 21 August closed its land border with Guinea, while the country's sea and air borders will also be closed to vessels and aircraft from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Chad on 21 August closed its land border with Nigeria at Lake Chad. The country previously reportedly banned the entry of any travellers originating or transiting through Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria or Sierra Leone, with airlines serving the country reportedly rerouting flights.

South Africa on 21 August restricted entry for all non-citizens travelling from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The government subsequently clarified that this was not a blanket ban and could be waived for 'absolutely essential travel'.

The people that survived the plague quarantined themselves from everyone else. No surprise it was well off land owners that walled themselves in for a month until the disease burned out. Afterwards they had no peasants to work for them and had to work the land themselves in order to survive.
