The Price of Gold Tracked US Debt Levels until 2013

Here is a new chart from Sharelynx showing the correlation of U.S. debt vs. the price of gold.

You'll notice an almost direct correlation between the US debt levels and the price of gold from 2000-2013.

From 2013 through the present, the correlation has diverted significantly.

2013 was the year when massive naked short selling of gold began taking place.

Between 2000 and 2013 is a very short time. Does it hold up if you look longer? Was US debt was falling between 1980 and 2002 when the price of gold was declining? You do note that it doesn't work after that time as well. It does not seem to provide any useful information for investors. Didn't the diversion occur in 2011 when gold peaked at $1900 and started down rather than in 2013? Or was US debt in decline for a couple years there?

There goes Zippy using the price of gold in 1980 again! Just a random year!
