5 Reasons Why You Should Eat Chia Seeds TODAY!

    by Derek Lovell

Chia seeds are tiny black seeds that come from the plant, Salvia Hispanica. The seeds were an important food for the Aztecs and Mayans way back in the day as they were able to provide them with sustainable energy.

Despite their ancient history as a dietary staple, only recently did chia seeds make a comeback as a modern day superfood. In the past few years, they have exploded in popularity and are now consumed by health conscious people all over the world.

Before we get into the benefits that the seeds hold, let’s look at their nutritional profile.

A one ounce (approximately 2 tablespoons) serving of chia seeds contains:

    11 grams Fiber
    4 grams Protein
    5 grams Omega-3
    18% of your daily Calcium
    30% of your daily Manganese
    30% of your Magnesium
    27% of your daily Phosphorus

    1. They’re Loaded With Antioxidants

Another area where chia seeds shine is in their high amount of antioxidants. Although antioxidant supplements are not very effective, getting antioxidants from whole foods can have positive effects on your health. Most importantly, antioxidants fight the production of free radicals, which can damage molecules in cells and contribute to aging and various diseases.

    2. Combat Diabetes

Due to their ability to slow down digestion, chia seeds are being studied as a potential natural treatment for type 2 diabetes. The jelly-like coating that the seeds develop when exposed to liquids can also prevent sugar spikes in the blood.

I saw a guy the other day with lime green hair...I thought he was the Riddler from Batman.

I've never eaten them but I've had a few pets here and there. I might have to give them a shot and donnay's lemonade looks yummy.

I made a chia drink this morning. I just put a tsp of chia seeds in 10 oz of cold water with a slice of lemon. At first it was weird but after it sat for a little while the seeds softened up and it was quite enjoyable and refreshing.

    Suzanimal's cha-cha-chia water...

I'm loving my cha-cha-chia water. I've noticed my appetite has decreased and my energy level has increased while drinking this stuff. I started with just one after coffee with breakfast but now I drink it all day because I love the texture. After you let it sit for a minute and the seeds soften up it feels like citrus pulp in your mouth.

I agree. However, my DH doesn't agree. I had him try it the other day, he said, "that's just awful, ugh, ewe, get it away from me!" You would of thought I was trying to poison the man. SMDH

I was in line at WF a couple weeks back and the lady in front of me was waiting to checkout and all she was buying was a bottle of that stuff. I watched her as she opened the cap, took a swig, got a awful grimace on her face, spit it back in and put the cap back on. She turned around, put the bottle on the belt on the closed lane behind us and walked out the door.

I hope you told someone that works at the store so they would not resell it...

When some one eats a poor diet often times things that are highly nutritious taste terrible because their tongue is coated with chemicals. Once your body is really clean you can taste how bad prepackaged food really is.

That is just flat out disgusting.

That I did. I was actually kinda shocked by it; as its nothing I would ever think to do.

I forgot to mention I've lost 4lbs this week. The only thing I did differently was the chia water which did suppress my appetite. I wasn't trying to lose weight, I just wasn't hungry at all.

    I had a Strawberry/Banana Snack squeeze.

    I think they are great!

If he physically saw them he would have never tasted it.

    Ha, ha

I love the texture but they do look nasty. My sons think my cha-cha-chia water looks disgusting. I've been putting them on their salads and they're fine with that but in the water they say it looks like frog eggs.

    Frog eggs

    New cha-cha-chia water recipe.

Cut up a few slices of cucumber and soak in glass of water overnight, a tablespoon of chia seeds, a squeeze of lemon, and let sit for 10 minutes before drinking. Re-Freshing!

good thread.. I use white chia seeds to "hide" them better in soups. They don't come up looking quite so much like caviar.. must check the nutritional profile against standard black ones. I think the whole chia beverage thing is going to become my after coffee breakfast ritual.
Disclaimer: any post made after midnight and before 8AM is made before the coffee dip stick has come up to optomim level - expect some level of silliness,
