When a 53-year-old spectator attended a mix martial arts show he wasn't expecting to be doing any fighting. But after a fighter dropped out of the event in Bourbonnais, IL, the promoters turned to audience participation.
According to TSN's BarDown, 53-year-old fan Tim Karaker had only one hour to prepare for his fight.
Somehow he ended up being victorious.
The site also reports the video was filmed by Stephan Bonner from the first Ultimate Fighter.

One thing about these fights, these guys keep their wind. It's pretty fast paced too. If you watch a fight in the real world, people can't usually go more than a few minutes tops.

Publicity stunt. Maybe MMA going WWF. People fight others that weigh the same. Obviously the old dude was much heavier.

Not true. UFC was originally a league with no weight classes whatsoever. Mostly a public demonstration of Gracie BJJ. You wound up with sumo wrestlers fighting Brazillian JJ specialists and the guy with half the weight but twice the skill still won. It's one of the great things about MMA. It's a test of pure martial skill.
BTW, I personally know an MMA fighter. In his last fight he got a concussion (wound up winning though). I assure you, the hits are very real at every level from amateur to pro.

The extra weight is not always an advantage, especially if it makes you slower.

For example, when WWE wrestlers Brock Lesnar and Dave Batista tried MMA (the former was successful, the latter was fair) they dropped their muscle mass. After leaving MMA, they took time to bulk up before returning to the WWE.

As an old guy...I approve of this message.
    On Trump:
How conservative Republicans can continue to support this arrogant imposter—the man who brags about inflicting the world with the Covid mark of the beast; the man who said, “Take the guns first, go through due process second”; and the man who deliberately played and then set up Stewart Rhodes (of course, Stewart was all too eager to be Trump’s patsy) for an 18-year prison sentence—is truly beyond my comprehension.” Chuck Baldwin

Something tells me the 21yo won't be getting a UFC contract anytime soo...ever.

Kudos to the old man and he had a pot belly to boot. There are 2 fights I will not let myself lose. One is to an older man with a pot belly and preteen. Then again, I try to avoid fights whenever I can.

He's either not very good or he was told to go easy.

Don't let a pot belly or grey/receding hair fool ya. I've seen a number of senior instructors with the old man pot belly who are fast as hell in a ring. I doubt they'd win the 100 meter sprint, though.

Probably just not that good. It has the look/feel of an amateur or maybe semi-pro bout. That's where n00bs get their start and hobbyists have shiggles.

That should be more along the lines of "Old age and skill will beat youth every time" IMO. (they're both accurate, though)

    50, the new 30

Good for both of them. I know that most young'nz can benefit from some humility, and that guy was a pretty humble victor.

Good fight. Haymaker city, but a good fight.

21 y/o couldn't take a punch. The older guy got a lucky one in somewhere in the middle, and it took the wind out of the kid's sails. One more good punch later and he was out.

Is 30 the new 15? I certainly act like it...

It was at 2:03, after that, the kid was out while still standing.

    From 2004:
    United States[edit]
Prior to state sanctioning, weight classes were not mandatory since the competitions were held without the approval of the athletic commissions. For instance, the Ultimate Fighting Championship introduced two weight classes at UFC 12: heavyweight, which grouped competitors above 200 lb (91 kg), and lightweight, which grouped competitors under 200 lb.

Weight divisions underwent many changes in the ensuing years, but the ability of promotions to autonomously decide their own weight classes eventually disappeared after athletic commissions began supervising mixed martial arts.

In 2000, the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts were codified by the New Jersey State Athletic Commission. The California State Athletic Commission had worked extensively on regulation, but their sanctioning of MMA was not implemented due to state governmental issues surrounding the process.[1] California officially sanctioned MMA on December 28, 2005, using the ruleset it helped devise five years previously.[2]

Since then, to create uniformity, all state commissions in the United States that regulate mixed martial arts have assimilated these rules into their existing unarmed combat competition rules and statutes. For a promotion to hold mixed martial arts events in a state-sanctioned venue, the promotion must abide by the state athletic commission's body of rules for weight limits.

In July 2008, a change to the existing classes was proposed to the Association of Boxing Commissions to expand the weight classes to 14, with most classes 10 pounds apart and a division of the current 205–265 lb heavyweight class into two. The proposals were met with resistance from various quarters, including from the UFC and several state athletic commissions.[3] The proposed classes were later rejected by the ABC.[4]

Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts[edit]
The Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts designate limits for nine different weight classes in mixed martial arts. Fighters must be weighed in pounds (lb):[5]

    Weight class name Upper limit
in pounds (lb) in kilograms (kg)
    Flyweight 125 56.7
    Bantamweight 135 61.2
    Featherweight 145 65.8
    Lightweight 155 70.3
    Welterweight 170 77.1
    Middleweight 185 83.9
    Light Heavyweight 205 93.0
    Heavyweight 265 120.2
    Super Heavyweight No weight limit

The original UFC they didn't even want to have rounds, they had to in order to be sanctioned by the athletic commissions.

You sure? I know there were occasions in which people like the Gracies wanted no time limits for their particular fight (like Royce's fight with Sakuraba) because they believed no limit to be an advantage-but no one else.

It was something Dana White mentioned in an interview or documentary, I don't remember what it was called.

Cool. There ought to be a "branch" of UFC that maintains no time limit rules. That would be more realistic/"Ultimate" than 3 5-minute rounds in the octagon, IMO.
