You're the one who called the guy an $#@! or somesuch.....

Until this post you never mentioned a rant either?

What's up with the story Paul?

If you're riding in their car it's your responsibility to get out and wait on the side of the road while the car owner smokes, thinking otherwise is a BIG problem!

How is this different than him asking you to step outside while he smoked?

I'm curious Paul. Do you also ask people to get out of a vehicle when they have to fart?

Just wondering, I work with smokers. The smoke doesn't bother me. But then suddenly it smells like something died, turned to $#@!, died again then turned to $#@!.

You know that when you smelling someone's fart you are pretty much getting their poop in your nose and in your mouth, so how do u handle fatulence? We all know old guys fart a million times an hour. Its a direct assault by ass to the face. How do you handle such situations?

Funny how umpteen posts later you finally qualify your position with the fact that you've ridden in a company car with this fellow, I'd be interested in hearing his take on your behavior then....(Could be he thought it was your turn to get out of the car while he smoked?)

It's entirely possible, probable even, that something went on then that he believed gave him cause to behave as he did in his car...
I don't think it's funny. It wasn't his car so it wasn't his choice. I, however, had to be in his car for my job. And no, nothing went on. You can suspect me all you want, but that's just showing your bias again. He really was just a dumbass.

You very easily jump to suspecting me of wrongdoing even though you have no knowledge of the event. You're just proving my point that you're incredibly biased against non-smokers.

I called him that because he was an $#@!. What about the rant? I summed up the rant perfectly by telling you he didn't want to stop and get out to smoke. What else do you need to know about specifically what he said?

The smoke stays in the car after he's done smoking. It doesn't all just immediately evaporate. It gets in the upholstery and the smell will remain for hours even with the window open. There's a reason we have common courtesy. My boss always got out of the car when I was riding with him because he understood that you can't just expect it all to be gone the second after he stops.

It's different because it affects me more than it affects him. If you smoke in the car, it doesn't just immediately go away after he stops. I would rather people just have some common courtesy. Again, my boss completely understood that. I'm touchy about it because it's my body and I know how I react to it and I don't like it. Sorry if my sensitivity to it offends you. I still have the right not to be exposed to it if I'm just trying to do my job.

You tried to tell this guy he had to get out of his own car to smoke?

I'd have booted you out physically, sounds like the guy showed you much more respect than you deserved.

Work or not you have no authority to tell someone to get out of their own car because you don't want to smell their smoke.

My prima-donna assumption seems spot on....

No, because $#@! is in everything. I'm not offended by $#@!. I'm offended by known neurotoxins. $#@! particles are literally everywhere.

No, I tried to tell him he had to get out to smoke if I was going to keep riding with him. Because, you know, it's my JOB. How do you even know what it sounded like? You're just showing your bias again and again and again. My only goal was to not be exposed to it, so I decided to do what was necessary to get out of his car because he wouldn't. I elected to remove myself from the situation altogether. How is that unreasonable?

I never threatened you. Why are you so defensive? You're telling me I've got issues and you seem paranoid I'm going to break into your house or something and kidnap your family. WTF?

After I asked him to get out of the car to smoke, he got mad and I decided I would rather just not be there. Again, what's the problem? Even if I am sensitive about it to you, what's the problem?

And I told you I'm an athlete, so no, I wouldn't expect you to get it, but you don't really have to understand it in order to agree that I had the perfect right to do what I did.

You had every right to get out of his car and hit the road...

It was the lipping before you did that you had no right to.

You're quite lucky that guy actually let you finish your "suggestion" that he get out of his car to suit your proclivities...

Hell you're lucky all he did was yell at you for your audacity.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to not be around smokers Paul but there's everything wrong when you try to tell one how to behave in his own car.

If you can't see that (and it appears you can't) no amount of peckin' on this keyboard is going to help you.

Remember what I've typed if you ever actually leave the country to "teach" because most folks aren't as nice and polite as the guy you've been railing about.

    Wise advice,Paul.
I believe you had settled on Korea? You might want to rethink that, they rate 38 spots ahead of the USA in cigarette use per capita and they all know Kung-FU.

I would suggest Uganda,Kiribati,Solomon Islands or Guinea.

Again, how can you possibly know how any of this went down? What "lipping" are you talking about? You don't know what I said, so how is it that you have the audacity to paint me as the bad guy? I never told the guy how to behave. I ASKED him to do something for me and when he wouldn't, I did the only other option available. Somehow, you still seem to think I'm in the wrong and I'm just confused as hell, which leads me to believe that you really just hate non-smokers for no reason. You don't know how "polite" he was. How are you even able to make all these assumptions?

I don't get how you all think I'm in the wrong for asking some hick (and he was a hick, not just because of his smoking) to get out of the car to smoke while I was with him doing my job. After he got angry for apparently no reason, I decided to get out of there and did the only thing that would allow me to do that. How is that unreasonable?

Also, I live in a place with a lot of smokers already, so it won't bother me as long as they are polite, and from what I hear, they are.

You know, if somebody would just explain to me how I was in the wrong for ASKING them to step outside and then leaving when they didn't, I would be happy to oblige, but nobody can seem to do that without making smartass comments for some reason. I really don't get how I'm the bad guy. Tod said multiple times that it's perfectly okay to ask somebody not to smoke while you're there, so I'm really confused as to what part of that was unreasonable.

Besides, hick isn't even an insult around here there's so many of them. (And no, I never actually called him that or any other name to his face.)

I'm going to try this one more time even though it seems as though I'm wasting cyber ink....

"Please let me step out of your vehicle while you smoke." Is perfectly acceptable and will most likely get a polite and courteous response..

"Get out of your car to smoke because you know it bothers me." Should invoke ire and retribution from the car owner...

There's no need to respond, either you understand or you don't.......

I understand perfectly what you're saying, but I still don't think you get it, so I'm going to try one more time:

This is the crux of the issue: I asked, nothing more. That should not invoke anger from anyone. I don't care who you are, asking for something should not invoke anger. When he declined, I took the only other reasonable route and got out of there. It doesn't matter how sensitive you think I am, I still have the right to self-determination.

Every other person I was with understood that they needed to accommodate me to some degree because I was the one teaching them how to do their job. Given that I was helping them to make their living by being there, I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask for them to accommodate my needs to at least that degree.
