Retaliation vs Self defence?
I know your not allowed to retaliate in fights...(well you can...)
What are the differences?

A private citizen has an obligation to retreat when faced with a threat (except inside their own home in most states). It is only when they have no ability to flee, that they may use force in self defense, and then only force that is sufficient to neutralize the threat of harm.
If someone walks up to you and punches you, you walk (or run) away, you do not hit back. Hitting back is retaliation. If you run away, and get "cornered" you can hit back to prevent the aggressor from hitting you again.
the law is very, very clear on this. If you aim a gun at someone, and they have no where to hide, they can shoot you in self defense. But, if they can safely avoid the threat, that is their first obligation under the law. In my 12 years in Homicide, I worked several cases with legitimate self-defense issues. We did not charge several people (citizens, not police officers) who had legitimately, and within the scope of the law, used deadly force in self defense (or in the defense of another).

Self defense is to prevent a further attack.
Retaliation is revenge for the attack.
You must be in imminent danger of a continued attack to claim self defense.

retaliation is an act committed against a person after such a fight, while self defense happens during the fight itself, wherein, a defending person obviously defends itself from such attacks...
hope this helps...
