NFL Announces Stricter Domestic Violence Penalties

How does any employer deal with the off-work activities of employees?

NFL Announces Stricter Domestic Violence Penalties

The NFL announced on Thursday that it will institute harsher punishments for players who commit domestic violence.

In a letter to team owners, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said that the penalty for a first offense is a six-game ban under the personal conduct policy. Players who commit a second offense will be banned for life. ProFootballTalk tweeted that the new domestic violence policy was announced without input from the NFL Players Association. According to Albert Breer of the NFL Network, Goodell can "act unilaterally" on the new domestic violence punishments because it lies under the league's personal conduct policy.
    ...
The NFL was widely criticized after giving Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice a two-game suspension following a domestic violence arrest during the offseason.
    ...
In the letter, Goodell admitted that he got the Rice punishment wrong.

"My disciplinary decision led the public to question our sincerity, our commitment, and whether we understood the toll that domestic violence inflicts on so many families," Goodell wrote, via USA Today Sports. "I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future properly reflect our values. I didn't get it right. Simply put, we have to do better. And we will."

Before the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony earlier in August, Goodell defended the two-game suspension for Rice, saying that it was "consistent with other cases."

If it has an effect on the employer's profits, it is definitely within the scope of interest of the employer.

This is hilarious, considering they gave Ray Rice just a two-game suspension for knocking his finacee out cold.

Do not forget, the fiance spat(she admitted this) on him first before he knocked(could easily have been him grazing her on the chin) her out. So basically, she assaulted him first and he defended himself and still the state was about to lock him up if he didn't go into some diversion program.

I am sorry but there are 2 things that if done to me will produce an immediate reflexive punch to the face and those 2 things are spitting on me and punching me in the nuts.

It's easy to say she did something "first," but what happened before that? What was really first? All we know is what we think we can see on this film. What happened before they got to this point?

Sure, it is always up to the employer. But in today's upside down bizzaro world, does every employer need to have a set of guidelines equal in size to the entire relevant legal code?

The Baltimore Sun broke the story that Rice had been arrested, charged, and released. His attorney, Andrew Alperstein, claimed that Rice's fiancée had also been arrested in connection with the incident, which he described as a "very minor physical altercation."

That may be so; Atlantic City police aren't returning calls on the matter right now and the casino declined to comment on the incident. According to our tipster, though, word at the Revel early Saturday morning was that a woman—presumably the fiancée—had spit on Rice and that in retaliation

Just thought I'll add a little background to the story. Ray Rice did not attack his fiancee for no reason, he attack in retaliation to a spit assault from his girl friend. I know some members think its fine and dandy to just spit on people but either way, its important to present the full story.

Also to the double standards is glaring, try spitting on a cop and see the kind of beating you get, but the cop gets no jail time for defending himself from the spitter but the same state that let the police off scot-free will throw the books at a civilian like Ray Rice.

I understand. An eye for an eye. Your finacee spits what you take in every time you kiss her and so rightly deserves to be knocked into oblivion.

Btw, no one here but copsuckers defends the cops...

"If you do some $#@! that hits the news, we will punish you in equal proportion to the amount of negative publicity generated." Boom, there is the entirety of the NFL guidelines.

Conversely, "If you generate positive publicity, we will treat you as if you are a good player even if you are not." The Tebow effect.

No matter what happens it's not going to affect NFL's business. However, it will be interesting to see how Roger Goodell squirms out of this one, especially when he likely seen the footage TMZ released today before he gave the 2 game suspension. I bet a lot of money is going to be donated to domestic violence shelters, and Ray Rice getting suspended for the season (or maybe even more).

Anyway.. why do women marry men who physically abuse them? That wasn't the first time she was hit by Rice judging by his reaction. Also, she married him AFTER he knocked her out cold. It can't all be about the money can it?

Most likely a history of severe child abuse.

He was cut by the Ravens and suspended indefinitely. If she married him for financial security, she struck out.

This whole incident has been a major embarrassment for the NFL, Dear Commish and the Ravens organization. If it weren't for the public outcry, the Ravens would still be speaking highly of his character and would probably give him a raise.

I'm not saying he handled this right but I saw her hit him at least once and was advancing to strike him again when he hit her.

You slap at a hornets nest, you are going to get stung. Violence works both ways, and I don't believe women should be a "protected" class just because of their gender.

Now before I get flooded with neg rep, just let me finish...

He shouldn't have hit her back, their relationship is dysfunctional and violent. But if he was a real man he'd drop her off on the curb with a $20 bill and found himself a better gal.

That said, she was asking for it.

With power comes responsibility. Response should be proportional. So a ripped jock shouldn't knock a woman out because she picked at him a little.

    Great post.

When women throw temper tantrums they need to be disciplined just like children do.

You know, come to think of it... if those women folk don't want get raped anymore, they need to stop dressing so provocatively- if college women don’t want to get date raped- they should just be good girls and not go to parties or have any fun. After all, they're just asking for it.

And to think: all this could be avoided if women just stayed in the home, kept their traps shut, dress conservatively, and serve their man like a nice subservient wife/girlfriend should.

You disobey or get feisty with us men folk, you're gonna what's comin' to ya.

We live in a culture where you may not hit a woman no matter how hard she works to provoke it, and keep in mind that pretty much every woman knows she can get away with things that would get a guy slugged in 2 seconds or less.

Absolutely. This culture is going to hell. Say what you want about Saudi Arabia, but they sure do know how to handle their women.

Because there are no grey areas between Saudi Arabia and the US.

But the problem with these kind of harsh penalties is that the league is not only punishing Rice, they are also punishing the wife. I can imagine in the future, NFL wives who have some kind of domestic problem with their mate but still love each will do everything humanly possible to hide any and all abuses. Plus women are going to use this to blackmail their lovers.

The attitude about domestic violence here is quite frankly disgusting. Anybody defending Ray Rice should be ashamed of themselves. What he did was gutless and his fiancee did not deserve to:

    A) Be cold clocked
    B) Dragged out onto the street
    C) Not even have the bastard who cold clocked her check to see if she was okay, and just walk away

    Despicable...

I'm not sure if some of you are just trolling or genuinely hold these P.O.V's, but either way, it is embarrassing in my opinion.

Ok, let me ask you this.

If YOU went out in the street and randomly hit somebody, would you be really all that surprised if that person hit you back?

Why does this woman get a free pass when she was being violent first?

Again- to be perfectly $#@!ing clear here. I am not defending Ray's actions. I am questioning the lady's.
