Cop KILLS Police Dog..Leaves dog in hot car for 6 hours.

The cop is being charged with animal cruelty charges...and of course his plea is not guilty.

Wasn't there some law in some place that said if you kill or attack a police dog it's similar punishment to attacking an officer? Didn't a homeless man get swatted for showing a knife to a barking k-9? Looks like this is a misdemeanor.

MILLS, Wyo. (AP) — A Wyoming police officer has pleaded not guilty to an animal-cruelty charge that alleges a police dog died after he left it in a hot patrol car for several hours.

According to an investigator's statement filed in Natrona County Circuit Court, Mills police officer Zachary Miller left the dog, a 10-year-old female black lab named Nyx, in his patrol car for over six hours July 9.

"It's a tragedy," Mills Mayor Marrolyce Wilson said.

The car was running, but the air conditioning was off and outside temperatures reached 86 degrees, KCWY News 13 reported (http://bit.ly/1tAzzhs).

Miller, a four-year veteran of the Mills Police Department, has pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge, the Casper Star-Tribune reported Friday (http://bit.ly/1vsZr03 ).

KCWY reported that he appeared for a preliminary hearing Friday.

Nyx was trained to detect drugs and had been with the department since 2006. Miller had been her handler for the past two years, and the dog lived with his family and went on family vacations.

Mills police Chief Bryon Preciado said it's not normal to leave a car running that long. "I'm not justifying it," Preciado said.

The affidavit states that Miller left the dog inside his car, went into the police department about 6 a.m. and did not return to the car until about 12:20 p.m. Police dogs are allowed inside the station, Preciado said.

During the time Miller was inside, he was training another officer on patrol-duty procedures. Miller is no longer a training officer, Preciado said. The officer who was with Miller that day will not be disciplined, Preciado said.

Miller remains employed by the police department but is currently not on active duty, Preciado said. He was suspended for a week with pay starting the day the dog died.

"It was a mistake he's going to have to pay for," Preciado said. "He's going to be disciplined through our department."

Miller had never faced disciplinary action by the department before this incident, Preciado said. He was named "Officer of the Year" in 2013.

The dog had assisted Casper Police, Wyoming Highway Patrol, the Division of Criminal Investigation and the Natrona County Sheriff's Office, Preciado said. A plaque or other kind of memorial will be created in the dog's memory at the police department, he said.

The dog's body was buried on Miller's property, Preciado said. "Everyone was hurt by her loss," he said.

Nyx was the department's first and only police dog. The department has suspended its K9 program and is reviewing its policies, Preciado said.

Alarms will be installed in the K9 patrol car before the department acquires a new police dog, Preciado said. The alarm will come with a key fob that dog handlers will carry that will alert them when the car gets too hot or too cold.

    Summary execution in this case.

I wonder what would happen if a Mundane blew away a cop that had just killed his dog?

Oklahoma City police dog dies after being stabbed by chase suspect

    http://kfor.com/2014/08/25/police-of...h-speed-chase/

OKLAHOMA CITY – An Oklahoma City police dog is killed in the line of duty following a high speed chase.

Police say one of their officers also shot and killed an armed suspect trying to escape arrest.

Police chased the suspect for 30 minutes before the shooting.

The pursuit sped through Moore, Norman and ended along I-35 near Goldsby.

After crashing his car, the suspect tried to run on foot.

Police say he then repeatedly stabbed a police dog trying to catch him.

“The canine officer made his way to the suspect’s location to pull the canine off the suspect and noticed the suspect armed with a knife and had been actively stabbing the canine,” said Oklahoma City police Capt. Dexter Nelson.

That’s when the dog’s partner opened fire and killed the suspect on the spot.

The dog was rushed to surgery but later died.

Contrary to popular belief, the police dog is not legally considered an officer.

“The canine, from the officer’s standpoint, is considered an officer, but from a legal standpoint he’s not. He’s a tool or a weapon used by the officer,” said Nelson.

The chase began inside a BNSF property when a cleaning crew saw a man breaking into a car and called police.

Investigators are still looking into whether the officer was justified using deadly force.

“We know the officer was in close proximity to the suspect when the suspect was stabbing the dog, which places the officer in great danger of the suspect,” said Nelson.

Police also say the same suspect may have been involved in a different chase that started in Bricktown on Sunday.

A man matching the suspect’s description skipped out on a bill and fled from the Bass Pro parking lot.

Police called off that pursuit without making an arrest.

The officer who pulled the trigger is is on leave while the shooting is investigated. Authorities say the officer has 13 years experience with the force.

Police have not *officially* released the suspect’s name because the next of kin hasn’t been notified.

However, we’ve done some checking and the suspect doesn’t have a criminal past here in Oklahoma.

...He was named "Officer of the Year" in 2013."

Does this mean he's disqualified from being a back-to-back winner?

In most states, a police dog is considered a full-fledged police officer, sometimes even given a badge.[2][16][not in citation given] As such, most laws find assaulting a police dog to be equal or very similar to assaulting a human officer, and as a result some agencies will deem it acceptable for officers to open fire on a person who is intentionally hurting a police dog, with apparent attempt to kill it.

That seems a bit harsh...I think just 2 weeks paid vacation at home is enough discipline for the Officer of the Year. That's a real punishment those officers can understand...

So if a mundane does something sick like lock a police dog in a hot car for 6 hours, they can be shot and killed. But if a cop does it....Time to break out the DVD's of COPS Season one through ten for the next 2 weeks while they sit at home and collect a paycheck.

Where was this jackass at for six hours anyway? Beating a mundane in a basement or screwing the chiefs old lady maybe?
The suspension with pay best be to give him the benefit of a doubt (like maybe the AC knocked off? Or it was an officer who looked like him?).
But if he is found guilty then he needs to turn in the badge and pay retribution accordingly.

CASPER, Wyo. — Mills police officer Zachary Miller did not intend to kill police dog Nyx, an eight-year veteran of the department, when he left the animal in a hot car for several hours last month, Natrona County’s top prosecutor said Monday
