There is a serious push for a national ID card right now. It is an issue that I think more folks should pay attention to. I know it's hard with all the mud they are slinging right now, but read this propaganda piece to get Massachusetts residents to buy into a national ID card.

Susan Podziba couldn’t enter a federal building near Washington this month because her driver’s license revealed an unacceptable home state: Massachusetts.

Bay State residents can no longer use their driver’s licenses to get inside some government agencies because the state is one of nine that have not signed on to a federal law called REAL ID. If nothing changes, they will even lose the ability to display their licenses to board a plane.

The REAL ID measure presses states to verify citizenship and update security standards when they issue licenses. Congress intended the act to prevent terrorists who arrive in the country illegally from boarding planes. But officials in Massachusetts and elsewhere have balked at a program they claim costs millions, raises privacy concerns, and infringes on state’s rights.

States face no direct penalty other than the frustration of their citizens.

Some restrictions — such as the one that kept Podziba, a public policy mediator from Brookline, out of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration — began in late July.

umm, what are the other states that are holdouts. I know there are people that maintain residences in multiple states but only one is there main one. Like could I rent someones closet and... I think I'd take tax hit doing this, but it would probably be worth it...

The Feds are already hooked into the state driver license databases, all this would do is make identification slightly more efficient. The Real ID isn't about catching illegal immigrants, clearly that isn't a priority or so many wouldn't be getting let go (which I am okay with, despite the welfare state). Marxists? Illegal Immigration, from the Govts perspective, is not about keeping non citizens out, its about keeping citizens in.

National ID id what enables this, and it will come in the form of other existing identification, such as State Drivers License. Why is your SSN on there already? Because it is a National ID and has been for years, complete with RFID and Biometric Bull$#@!. I dont know how many people remember the REAL ID Act that was tacked on to some other bill (I dont recall which one at the moment), but no one debated, it was just attached to something else.

As far as flying, I have zero desire to fly, and pay $#@!s to grope me, spread my buttocks, and feel like I am constantly forced to prove that I am not a terrorist at EVERY turn. Why would I throw money at companies that profit from this $#@!?

If you lump people into a group you will find disagreements among them. It's not valid to call it hypocrisy. It's not a 'we' or a 'they' it's individuals with varying beliefs. Pointing out hypocrisy is fine, but it exists within an individual, not a group.

The REAL ID Act, as it would be called, imposed a national standard by forcing the states to adopt uniform standards for their identification cards – or did it?

Maine responded by passing a resolution in 2007 that refused any type of REAL ID adoption in the state. Surely, Maine’s legislature was warned by opponents who dreaded the thought of opposing the federal juggernaut. Leading the charge, Maine showed that one state can stand up against the iron will of the federal state.

When Maine stood up, Utah took notice. Utah passed a similar bill a month later. The Utah law noted that REAL ID is “in opposition to the Jeffersonian principles of individual liberty, free markets, and limited government.” Since that time, 22 states passed similar bills and resolutions, creating additional opposition toward the national standard. Similar resolutions are pending in over a dozen additional states.

As a result, the REAL ID Act has been effectively neutered in much of the country. The federal government has not elected to devote its resources to enforce the mandate, sue the participating states, or send in the tanks as a result.
