The tea party groups had an unexpected big win last night.
At the Oakland County convention the establishment had a slate of delegates for the state convention from their Nominating Committee. They had to do this because they "forgot" to send the sub-caucus apportionment list on time to the State party.
In my caucus, at least half the people on the slate weren't even in attendance. They tried to adjourn before a motion could be made to amend the slate. The chair ignored calls for a division vote. They eventually allowed an alternative slate to be voted upon, but it failed. They refused to allow any amendments to the slate and then they adjourned despite objections. It was in bad-faith at best, but it was really a railroad job.
However in MI-11 (the crown jewel of Oakland county), the tea party groups turned the tables and ousted the establishment chair. They also had the votes to amend the slate with their own nominees. Many party officials did not get nominated to the State convention--not even the county chairman. It was funny to see this slate tactic blow up in their faces. If they had just done the normal subcaucus nominations from the floor they probably would have many more delegates to the state convention.
Oh and the chairman hired the Waterford police force for extra security. It included 6 uniformed officers, an undisclosed amount of plainclothes officers and a K9 unit. Nothing says unity like a police squad. Your Republican membership dues at work.
I personally don't really care about the Lt. Gov. race, but I do care about the leadership blatantly trying to disenfranchise the grassroots. The next two conventions should be very interesting since that's where the county and state leadership will be selected.
