Israeli expert says Iron Dome defence is a hoax

An Israeli scientist and award-winning security expert has called the Iron Dome missile defence system "the biggest hoax the world has seen", Addustour news website has reported.

According to Dr Motty Scheffer, "Today, there is no missile which can intercept other missiles or rocket-propelled grenades, and the Iron Dome is a light audio system which blocks Israeli public opinion and, of course, itself. In fact, all the explosions that we have seen in the atmosphere are self-destruction. The Iron Dome did not launch any rocket that could intercept at least one missile fired from Gaza."

That is a pretty $#@!ty bomb!
I've always thought this was a pretty sketchy concept. I mean... I can see intercepting ICBMS... but intercepting RPG's? Yeah right.

Bryan this needs exposure... can we get a front page?

'We endorse the idea of voluntarism; self-responsibility: Family, friends, and churches to solve problems, rather than saying that some monolithic government is going to make you take care of yourself and be a better person. It's a preposterous notion: It never worked, it never will. The government can't make you a better person; it can't make you follow good habits.' - Ron Paul 1988

It's not like it would require any new technology, it's just a matter of engineering. It's a very feasible concept, although I'd think lasers or metal storm weapons will have more long-term relevance as an antimissile system than "anti-missile missiles", which strikes me as the more difficult/expensive route. If you can track a projectile accurately enough, figuring out a solution to intercept it is the easier part of the problem.

They are firing 500-1000 dollar garage made missiles ( if they even cost that much ) and they are using 100 000 $ rockets to stop them ( that was the price I came across ).As for the video, the explosions must be with proximity sensors for high performance ,while the Hamas rockets leave no trails because they are junk and most likely use all the propellant on lift off and then let gravity do its course, unlike the Iron dome ones who are all seen during take off and are actively using their propulsion to catch up to rockets.

I am truly skeptical of the effect it would have on modern rockets which all change course during flight to avoid interception or against a battery of 4-5 Grad/Plamen which can rain 150+ rockets in a few minutes. If the system works against cruise missiles it is highly valuable but to try to stop MLRS fire is a fulls errand.

A repeated theme is that the Hamas rockets can not be seen when intercepted. That would be because the propellant in the Hamas rocket would be spent by the time of interception. There would be no trail to make them visible from the ground.

Israel's largest paper had an article on this:

What if Iron Dome is a bluff?

That's what two prominent missile experts assert. Could the Israel Defense Forces and the government be lying to us?

An Iron Dome air defense system fires to intercept a rocket from Gaza Strip in Ashkelon, July 5, 2014. Do the missiles really intercept most rockets or just self-destruct? Photo by AP

Iron Dome is Israeli society’s deus ex machina coming from nowhere to solve the problems that left us helpless. We worship it. Unquestioningly. We were told up front that it can guarantee interception of only 90 percent of the rockets launched at us, so even a little damage and a few casualties and fatalities won’t cause us to doubt its efficacy.
However, Israel Defense Prize laureate and aerospace engineer Dr. Moti Shefer, whose specialty is interception missiles, says Iron Dome is a bluff. It doesn’t intercept anything but rather invents virtual rockets. The explosions we hear are the sounds of Iron Dome missiles self-destructing. As of the writing of these lines, Hamas rockets have done very little damage to people and property. We see this as proof of Iron Dome’s efficacy and reliability; Shefer says the number of rockets coming in from the Gaza Strip is immeasurably smaller than what Iron Dome reports and in any case they are tinpot weapons, so 95 percent of the time we are safe anyway, irrespective of Iron Dome (and the endless “open spaces” with which we have suddenly been blessed, like some new sort of manna rained down upon us by a benevolent deity).
