There are some things you might not know about Kentucky politician Henry Clay. Clay’s nickname was the “The Great Compromiser” and one time, when rushing to the Senate Chambers, Clay was attacked by a large goat on Pennsylvania Avenue.

He’s also the political predecessor of Rand Paul, at least according to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

“I can say this without fear of contradiction: He (Paul) is the most credible candidate for president of the United States since Henry Clay,” McConnell declared over the weekend at the annual Fancy Farm picnic in Kentucky, Politico reported.

Paul (R-Ky.) came to the picnic to lend support to McConnell, who faces a tough competition in the November election. McConnell reciprocated the vote of support, comparing Paul, a likely 2016 presidential contender, to McConnell’s political hero.

There certainly are some similarities between Paul and Clay, like the fact that both came to Washington D.C. by way of Kentucky and both have served in the Senate.

But in his maiden Senate speech, Paul made it a point to highlight differences between his and Clay’s political philosophies.

And, of course, there’s another key way Paul would likely want to differ from Clay. After three failed presidential bids, the elder statesman never made it to the White House.
