Canada : Man on Plane Jokes About a Bomb, SWAT Team Then Terrorizes Passengers

The control freak SWAT culture is everywhere. Passenger jokes about a bomb? Bring a SWAT team on the plane to scream and point weapons and hut hut hut about. "Hands Up, Heads Down!"

Man accused of making threat aboard Sunwing flight 'not at fault,' father says

The father of a 25-year-old Canadian man whose alleged threats forced a Panama-bound plane to return to Toronto Friday says his son has mental health issues and is “not at fault” for what happened.

The Sunwing plane was forced to turn around when a passenger said he wanted to bomb Canada, eyewitnesses reported.

Flight 772 departed from Toronto at 7 a.m. Friday, heading toward Panama City with 181 passengers, two infants and a crew of six on board.

Passenger Bettina Bathe told CTV Toronto the incident unfolded not long after takeoff when a flight attendant came by to pass out headsets.

"He basically just tore a strip off her, explaining how expensive the cigarettes are here in Canada, he hates Canada," Bathe said.

"Then he said, with great expression using his hands, 'I just want to bomb Canada.'"

    snip

It landed safely at Toronto's Pearson around 8:55 a.m., where the flight was met by authorities.

Passenger footage captured armed tactical police officers boarding flight 772 once it landed. The officers pointed their guns and yelled “Heads down! Hands up!” as they boarded the plane.

    'Extremely frightening' ordeal

Before the flight 772 passengers boarded another plane in Toronto earlier Friday, one woman said the entire experience was frightening.

“I was in the washroom and when I was trying to come out, the SWAT team shut the door on me and I was there for what it seems like an eternity,” Lorena Karim said. “And all I saw was guns … it was quite scary.”

One security expert said the video footage of tactical officers on the plane further shows that the so-called “SWAT team culture” has gotten “a little bit out of hand.

John Thompson of the Strategic Capital Intelligence Group said the police response may have been more aggressive than what the situation called for.

“Very few people ever see the police like that and it is extremely frightening,” Thompson told CTV News Channel Friday.

It used to be where (police) would probably send a couple of detectives on quietly and just hustle the fellow off in a low-key manner. But that sort of style is gone from policing now for about 20, 25 years and I don’t think we’ll see it back.

And the ones who enjoy pointing loaded weapons at innocents while screaming at them.

I just wonder what would have been the result of failure to comply with the confusing screamed out commands ? A gunshot to the face, or a punch ?

If he had a real bomb, he wouldn't be joking about it. Plus isn't the nationalized security team supposed to catch these things before they enter that airplane?

Geez, how many terrorists with a bomb are going to joke about it? I mean REALLY?

how many times in history have bomb threats been followed through?
Though it's kinda funny, riding the plane is like riding the bus now. You can stop wherever you feel like, just say bomb.

If I remember my details right, after the obviously bs "bomb threat" the plane was escorted back to Canada by F-16s , a two-hour flight. If they really cared so much about the passengers safety the plane would have been immediately cleared to land at the nearest airport (bomb going off on the ground much better than in the air). It probably would have been on the ground within 15-20 minutes.

Then when they got back to Canada they had to wait an hour for the hut hut team to show up. So the playing out of the security theater basically gave any potential bomber three more hours to make the bomb go boom.

My mom worked for an airline for 30 years and even before the patriot act and all this new spying crap if has been a definite no no to utter one word about a bomb while on a plane, in the airport or, talking on the phone to an airline rep and it has always brought the law down on who ever said the word in a NY minute their phone lines were always being monitored and believe me they never took it as a joke. Now I suppose it could been even worse than it was when my mom worked in the industry.

Several decades ago, hi-jacking airliners was popular. It got to be the same insane bull$#@! over-reaction from the 'authorities' if you even blinked wrong. The big joke was if you see someone you know named JACK on the plane, don't ever say ...''hi...Jack'.....you go to jail...

    crazy world is crazy...

Insane. Magic words can now make real things happen!

Exactly! This is nothing more than collective punishment and terror. If you utter the wrong words, you will be subjecting all of your fellow passengers to terror and violence.

Nonetheless, I hope the hut-hut-hutters all made it home safely to their loving families. And I hope at some point near the end of the passengers' ordeal that they were permitted to lower their hands and raise their heads and thank their punishers with applause as the Congressmen did moments after Miriam Carey was executed.

Assume for a moment this "mentally ill" gentleman really did have a bomb, and his goal was to bomb Canada. I know. Nuts. But let's pretend.

    1. You take him to Canada, which is probably the dumbest thing you could do. This amounts to the same as your buddy holding up a knife and going "man I could TOTALLY stab that crazy ex-wife of mine right now" and you going "hang on, let me drive you there."

    2. You flood the plane with SWAT type folks. What? Let's give the guy a bunch more targets, yelling contradictory commands, providing him cover as people confusedly try to get down, put their hands up, not move, get on the floor, cover their heads, and generally play a deadly game of Twister between the bomb guy and the cops.

    3. You create a situation with no obvious hope of a positive outcome. This is kind of the thing that suicidal attackers are hoping for, as it makes the decision for them. If it's either be shot, or blow yourself up and take out the people who were going to shoot at you with you, which is going to happen? Remember, this is not an open field with a clear sniper shot and some easy way of killing the guy before he sets anything off. It's a plane.

    4. You also create a situation where, just in case the guy has a bomb and wants to make it off the plane, he can jockey for position in the chaos and hide or change his appearance. Bear in mind that other passengers don't get an explanation, so none of them are going to go "oh, headphone guy? That's him!" so you really only have one flight attendant to worry about. Seems pretty easy to avoid in all the mess.

    5. Actually, a bomb is not needed. Just the threat of bombs would be a good way to "cry wolf" without blowing up operatives and wasting money on bomb materials. Scare people, tighten the security noose, and generally make people think even harder about flying anywhere because they might be delayed, diverted, and accosted by SWAT teams? Yeah that kind of seems more like terror than some guy going "man I'd like to bomb Canada."
Genuine, willful, aggressive ignorance is the one sure way to tick me off. I wish I could say you were trolling. I know better, and it's just sad.

Was the suspect already restrained / subdued before landing or was he running loose? If he was already restrained, why did the SWAT team do a full assault ? And if he was restrained, how does he raise his hands? Fair enough if the suspect was fighting all the way to the tarmac.

Danke, where do they put caged dogs in a commercial trasnport? Do they have a pressurized cargo compartment on most airliners?
