China 'Seals Off' Town After Man Dies of Bubonic Plague

    AFP July 23, 2014

BEIJING (AFP) — A Chinese town has been sealed off and 151 people placed in quarantine since last week after a man died of bubonic plague, state media said Tuesday.

The 30,000 people living in Yumen in the northwestern province of Gansu are not being allowed to leave, and police at roadblocks on its perimeter are telling motorists to find alternative routes, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) said.

Other reports said that earlier this month the 38-year-old victim had found a dead marmot, a small furry animal which lives on grasslands and is related to the squirrel.

He chopped it up to feed his dog but developed a fever the same day. He was taken to hospital after his condition worsened and died last Wednesday.

"The city has enough rice, flour and oil to supply all its residents for up to one month," CCTV added.

"Local residents and those in quarantine are all in stable condition."

CCTV said authorities are not allowing anyone to leave, although a previous report by the China Daily newspaper said “four quarantine sectors” had been set up in the city.

No further cases had been reported by Tuesday.

Plague is categorised as a “Class A infectious disease” in China, a report by the official news agency Xinhua said, “the most serious under China’s Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases”.

Bubonic plague is a bacterial infection best known for the “Black Death”, a virulent epidemic of the disease that killed tens of millions of people in 14th century Europe.

A more recent pandemic, the Modern Plague, began in China in the 1860s and reached Hong Kong by 1894, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says on its website.

"Over the next 20 years, it spread to port cities around the world by rats on steamships," it says. "The pandemic caused approximately 10 million deaths."

Primarily an animal illness, it is now extremely rare in humans.

Modern antibiotics are effective in treating plague, the CDC says, but without prompt treatment it can cause serious illness or death.

"Human plague infections continue to occur in the western United States, but significantly more cases occur in parts of Africa and Asia," it adds.

Cases occasionally emerge in China. A villager who found a dead marmot and ate it with other residents of Litang in Sichuan province, in the southwest, died of the disease in September 2012, a newspaper run by the health ministry reported.

Chinese media have not specified whether the latest victim’s dog fell ill.

I am sure their immune system are not working properly. Overuse of antibiotics are also causing these diseases to spread.

Well then I'm certainly glad that overuse of antibiotics isn't any kind of issue here.

The best immune system won't protect you from bubonic plague unless you have already been exposed to it in the past.

It didn't wipe out everyone. If people didn't have a good immune system then how did they live?

Some thieves lived. Ever heard of Thieves Vinegar?

Here is one story: The Four Thieves Vinegar. Perfumers by day, robbers by night. Four men made a concoction of herbs and essential oils in a base of vinegar and would douse their body with this before they went our plundering! They had a pretty good track record of stealing riches until the King found out and captured them, forcing them to give up their secret weapon against the plague. The herbal ingredients were wormwood, meadowsweet, juniper berries, rosemary, camphor, sage, cinnamon and cloves in a base of white wine vinegar.

Plague is effective at evading the immune system. No amount of home remedies will do you a bit of good unless you have previous immunity.

Overuse of antibiotics are also causing these diseases to spread.
    No, they aren't.

No disease kills 100%. Their immune systems mounted a defense before the bacterium spread to the blood and lungs.

Some thieves lived. Ever heard of Thieves Vinegar?
I'm sure some priests lived as well. Therefore, belief in God = immunity to plague. Or maybe it was the haircut...?

Documentaries - The Great Plague - A Clue to Genetic Protection against Infection

Since the beginning of recorded time infection has been the number one cause of mortality.

In the 17th century the great plague swept through European cities killing hundreds of thousands. But some people survived-they regarded as super survivors. They were mysteriously resistant to the deadly disease. Modern research is looking to find out how and why these people did not succumb. Could the great plague provide a key to surviving severe life-threatening infectious diseases? Could our own bodies be taught to overcome such infections?

Stephen O Brien is a medical researcher. He is one of many across the globe trying to find new ways to combat infectious diseases. He lost a brother to AIDS and so he is particularly motivated. He has come to believe that the secret to combating infectious disease may lie in our own DNA. He thought that there could be evidence to support this in the survivors from the great plague. Perhaps they might have passed on their particular immunity to their descendants.

In 1664, the people in London had no idea of the fate that was to befall them. A physician was called to a house for a very sick woman. He observed the typical sign of bubonic plague-a bubo on her neck. The position realised that the bubonic plague had returned to London. In the 17th century nobody knew the cause of the plague. It was a recurring phenomenon that ravaged cities from one generation to the next. It is believed historically that 150,000 died in London. In the midst of the plague there was a mystery. Some who were close to those with the infection were unaffected.

Some physicians during the play meticulously documented events. We now know that the plague was caused by a bacterial infection Yersinia pestis; this was recognised in the late 19th century. Rats were the carriers. Fleas would bite the rats and pick up the bacteria before pricing a human and transferring the infection.

The bacteria proliferated in the lymph glands causing them to swell. They spread throughout the lymph system and also travelled to the heart. There they entered the bloodstream and were transported throughout the body. Small blood clots formed blocking the blood supply to toes and fingers. Victims developed high fever before losing consciousness nurse and dying.

Some patients developed pneumonia and would cough up infected sputum. This like many respiratory illnesses could be transferred from human to human this time the infection being called pneumonic plague. The death rate in pneumonic plague was 90%. The question posed was how did the 10% who were in close contact with the infection survive? One possibility was that the survivors were the upper-class who did not believe in the same squalor as the poor. However, skeletal evidence suggests that many victims were from the upper classes. Further research has shown that business people were as likely to catch the disease as those who undertake rubbish collection in London.

Stephen O’Brien considered that those unaffected by plague might have some genetic endowments that protected them.

In the early 1980s the world first realised the potential dangers of AIDS. Initially, two populations were affected namely homosexual men and haemophiliacs. Haemophiliacs require blood extracts to replace their missing clotting factor. If the donor carried the AIDS virus the recipient would be affected. Again, as with the great plague in London, some who were at high risk, survived?

Dr O’Brien wondered if these haemophiliac survivors carried genetic protection. He joined the human genome project looking to find the gene concerned. Human chromosomes together consist of 3 million base pairs giving 25,000 genes. O’Brien was looking for the one in 25,000 genes that had mutated and provided genetic protection against infection. The genetic mutation proved to be delta 32. Only those with the mutation from both parents proved to be resistant to AIDS.

It is now believed that Delta 32 mutation first occurred in the 14th century and became relatively widespread because those with the mutation survived the plague whereas the others did not. O’Brien found his time capsule in a small village, Eyam, in the Peak District 200 miles north of London. Few new people came into the village left the village so that those who survived the plague in the 17th century were particularly likely to have descendants in the village. Many of the current villagers can trace their roots back to ancestors in the village at the time of the great plague.

260 residents of the village died out of a population of 800. Stephen O’Brien genetically tested members of the village. About 15% had the delta 32 gene compared to 10% in the general population. This supported the idea that the descendants of survivors from the great plague had a higher than expected incidence of the genetic mutation delta 32.

The next step was to assess the blood of those with delta 32 against the causative organism of bubonic plague. In this laboratory situation it was demonstrated that the delta 32 gene protect themselves against invasion by the bacteria. The hope now is that armed with this information therapy could be developed to counter infection for the majority who do not have the delta 32 mutation. A new generation of drugs has been developed cold fuzeon inhibitors. One HIV patient given one of these drugs has shown a remarkable improvement.

Dr O’Brien believes that just as the delta 32 mutation, we may be able to isolate genetic protection against numerous medical conditions and learn how to counter them.

I remember seeing a program on the History Channel about survivors of the European Black Death plague in the 1400s and the Delta 32 genetic mutation protection.

Garlic kills bubonic plague and other pathogen-based disease epidemics
    Posted by JB Bardot

During the 14th and 15th century pandemic, the black death killed nearly half the world’s population, according to, Bubonic Plague: Yesterday’s Scourge–and Tomorrow’s? As present-day cases of bubonic plague reappear in parts of North America and Europe, people are seeking natural methods to fortify themselves against this devastating disease. Due to its remarkable ability to destroy numerous toxic pathogens, garlic possesses the clout to kill plague.

    Plague

Bubonic plague is caused by the bacteria Yersinis pestis and is spread primarily by infected fleas found on rats.It is important to take fast action when plague strikes to save your life. Recognizing it as bubonic plague in its earlier stages can be difficult because initial symptoms mimic the flu with fever, chills and weakness. Treatment in the first 24 hours is critical to destroy the bacteria. Certain antibiotics such as stremptomycin, aureomycin and chloramphenicol have been used to treat plague patients, however, due to overuse, the plague bacteria is no longer responsive to most antibiotics.

As bubonic plague works its way deeper into your system, it settles in the lymph nodes, spreading rapidly to the skin through the lymphatic system. Severe trembling accompanied by profuse sweating, subcutaneous hemorrhaging, and painful, dark reddish-purple spots rapidly develop. In addition, painful hypersensitive buboes form in the lymph nodes of the armpit and groin. The buboes may swell as large as oranges, and fill with pus and blood. If the buboes are not carefully lanced, the infection causes blood poisoning. The disease is highly contagious and spread when the buboes burst. Left untreated, plague is 100 people fatal.

    Garlic

Garlic has been used medicinally by many cultures around the world for thousands of years. In the 1700s, gravediggers in Europe drank wine containing crushed garlic or ate fresh garlic in an effort to ward off plague. The amazing disease-fighting powers of garlic have repeatedly tested true in thousands of studies.

Garlic possesses potent, natural antibiotic and antimicrobial properties able to protect against plague. Garlic is also high in antioxidants that destroy free radicals, supporting a strong immune system. The active ingredient in garlic, allicin, contains antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties known to kill numerous disease-causing bacteria.

    Using garlic medicinally

Because garlic has such strong immune-building properties, regular supplementation acts prophylactically, preventing bubonic plague from taking hold. The best way to use garlic to prevent and treat plague is by consuming it raw every day. Crushing it first releases it’s powerful properties, increasing its potency. Next best use it in cooked foods in large quantities, daily.

Don’t like the smell or taste of fresh garlic? If that’s the case, take freeze dried garlic supplements in capsules form. Not as effective as fresh garlic, however, these can be taken daily especially if there is word of plague in your area.

Garlic can thin the blood, so if you’re taking it daily in any form, contact your natural health practitioner if you also take prescription blood thinners.

It is true garlic kills plague. I've been putting garlic in my food all my life, and I've never had plague.
