126 years old, pack a day smoker

    From Drudge;

Brazilian who turned 126 years old last week could be oldest living person

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...ng-person.html

A Brazilian man whose parents were African slaves could be the oldest living person ever documented after receiving a birth cerficate showing he turned 126 last week, it was reported on Tuesday.

Jose Aguinelo dos Santos was born on July 7 1888, just two months after slavery was abolished in Brazil - the last country in the world to outlaw the trade.

Yet the batchelor, who never married or had children, still walks without a stick, eats four meals a day and has no health problems - despite smoking a packet of cigarettes a day for the last 50 years.

Jose - known simply as Ze - was 26 when World War I broke out, and already a pensioner at 65 when Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the British throne.

He was 52 when Brazil football legend Pele was born - and 62 when Brazil last hosted the World Cup, in 1950.

One of five children, Jose was born in a slave compound in the town of Pedra Branca in the state of Ceara, northeast Brazil.

He was among hundreds of slave families who continued to live there, even after being granted their freedom.

He later travelled south to the state of Sao Paulo, where he spent most of his life working on a coffee plantation in the town of Bauru.

Now a resident of an old people's home in the same town, Jose likes to tell jokes and sing, hates having a bath, and never misses his daily plate of rice and beans.

And he told Brazil's G1 website there is no secret to living a long life: "The truth is that you just keep getting older. You take each stage at a time.

"If I got to this age it's because I've lived a lot, that's all."

Mariana Silva, psychologist at the Vila Vicentina home, said Jose has no health problems and is so lucid he still amuses other residents by cracking one-liners.

She said: "He's one of our most with-it residents.

"He doesn't have high cholesterol, diabetes or high blood pressure. The only medicine he takes are vitamins and a tablet to give him an appetite, which you can lose with old age.

"When he's on his own he likes to sing. None of us know the songs he sings. They're from a time no-one else remembers.

"He doesn't like to take a bath every day and it's sometimes impossible to get him to the shower. When he puts his foot down, that's it. No-one can get him in there."

Jose, who arrived at the home in 2001, received his birth certificate last month after living his entire life without any documents.

A team of experts arrived on his birth date after researching his past and interviewing him about his earliest memories, during which he was able to describe the slave compound perfectly.

The old people's home now hopes to provide conclusive evidence that he is the world's oldest man through 'Carbon-14' dating.

Jose Roberto Pires, the president of the retirement home, said they are determined to do the test even though it costs around £13,000.

But he added: "We are trying to find a way to do it without having to pay. This is very important. We believe the world's oldest ever person is living here with us, and this is the only way we can really prove it."

And those cigarettes don't have filters, either. And I'll bet he never developed a taste for chemical-laden "light" cigarettes. Which is why cigarettes haven't killed him.

LOL, but how boring would that be....I think I'm helping my husband live longer, I make him go to the Dr, nag him about eating right, make him take his vitamins, fuss at him about doing dangerous stuff....if it weren't for me that man would've died a long time ago.

I would rather live a few less years, and be happily married.

But like William tell said, I rather spend a few less years in this world if it meant that I spent it with a significant other that I love than live to 126 and be single.

    Agreed.

Although I must say, I haven't been able to conquer his selective hearing problem. I heard it only gets worse as they get older.

    Can you imagine?
There are no crimes against people.
There are only crimes against the state.
And the state will never, ever choose to hold accountable its agents, because a thing can not commit a crime against itself.

I'll bet you make him take a bath too.
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

Ummm, pharmaceuticals and stress? You might rethink those tactics...

Stress causes heart attacks. So think of it as self defense.

    There, does that help?

Keep going with all that and he may end up wishing he had.

There is only one correct way: freedom. All other solutions are non-solutions.

It appears that artificial intelligence is at least slightly superior to natural stupidity.

Our words make us the ghosts that we are.

Convincing the world he didn't exist was the Devil's second greatest trick; the first was convincing us that God didn't exist.

I still don't have one. You heard me right. I have no birth certificate and I have absolutely no intention of ever getting one.

I griped about my husband's "hearing" problem for years until I got fed up and made an appointment for him with an ENT doctor. Turns out he did actually have a hearing problem, he ended up having to get tubes in his ears.

My dad has hearing problems too. (70+ y/o) His doc cleaned a whole lot of wax out of his ears some years ago. Family tells me it helped quite a bit. (I try to avoid him because he annoys me :P so I can't testify about it personally) Try having a doc look into the hubby's ears.

Exactly. It's not the tobacco, it's the chemicals, something I bet he doesn't have in his cigarettes.

All that said, though, I'm kind of iffy on this story, considering all of the age-liars that come out of countries with no birth certificates. Carbon-14 dating might actually work since he's actually a living being, so that would help me believe it better. He could have easily come up with a story and recited all the facts he had to remember before his "interview".

Well, since I can't see the future that is not very relevant Since so many single and married people die at different ages for different reasons. Getting married is really one of my main things on my to do list, I'm not going to stay single because of this article.

Yeah, I'd rather marry and live to 76 than stay single and live to 126. I know where I'm going.

Although, this article does put some things into perspective. 76 seems like a really long time away to me, and it is (57 years) but 126 is a long, long time.

Maybe he liked not hearing so well? One man's "problem" is another man's refuge.

There is one thing that a poor man has and a rich man wants: Nothing.

This goes back to the Level of Validity of said threat being proportional to Fear Response. AKA Fearmongering. Govt always seeks to validate its existence. And there are valid threats out there. But its that Level of Validity that is, as Tod said, amplified. Govt tells us to be afraid of ALL things. MSM, based on profits with amplification of emotional responses creates sensationalism. Terrorism is a valid threat, but its that Amplification of Emotions that causes people to be controllable. Smoking is also a valid threat, but it is also heavily amplified. Lots of things make smoking dangerous, but that danger is amplified to a degree that is disproportionate from the Level of Validity of that Threat. Filters, using Lighters vs Matches, the chemicals in the Papers, Fire Safe Cigarettes (FSC, its on the side of many packs, it just means "more chemicals added"), Genetically Modified Tobacco, Pesticides, etc. All contributing factors.

The powers that be are so intent on creating that overwhelming sense of Fear in every single aspect of a persons life that it causes illogical responses. OMG, you had one cigarette one time in your entire life? How could you possibly live to be 75? One cigarette is too many? Its like people are responding by making this story go viral because of that very concept of unbelievability. Its definitely possible, but dont think about Smoking for a second, just look at how people are responding to the story. ITs a response of Fear, and it is that very same Fear that causes people to cry out and validatate the existence of Govt and Tyranny in all its forms to protect them from ALL things a person is told to be afraid of. Now to make Paper illegal because of a Fear of Papercuts and "we need Govt to protect us from Paper and those harmful Papercuts"...
