As soon as Jennifer Burga heard the gunshot, she told police she jumped out of the shower, got dressed and rushed out the front door of her Boca Raton home. Her 2-year-old pit bull, Alize, ran inside, leaving a trail of blood behind.

She asked the man, later identified by Boca Raton police as Patrick Barry, in front of her home if he shot her dog.

“Is she dead?” she remembered him asking.

He suggested she should call a vet, she told police.

Barry, 45, faces charges of animal cruelty, shooting a firearm in public and making a false report. He was released from the Palm Beach County Jail on $3,000 bond.

The pit bull survived, but the veterinarian suggested Alize get its tail amputated.

On May 7, Barry told Boca Raton police officers he was walking his American bulldog, Cheese, along the 900 block of 2nd Terrace, when he said a pit bull charged at him. Because he feared for his dog’s and his own safety, he pulled his handgun out from his waistband and shot the 2-year-old dog. He told police he didn’t even know he hit the dog until the owner came outside, according to the report.

Barry, who owns an animal removal service, said he shot the dog in self defense. Two witnesses and a veterinarian told police otherwise.

The veterinarian said the entry wound on the pit bull was on the underside of the tail, which, from her experience, meant the dog wasn’t charging when the gun was fired. She said if the dog charged Barry, the shot would have been in the torso or the head. She said the dog was either walking away or lying down at the time of the shooting.

Both neighbors who witnessed the incident told police the dog never went after Barry and that he was not walking a dog. One woman told police she couldn’t believe what she saw and called police. The other woman said she went inside before the shot went off, but immediately came back out to see Barry walking away. She said she yelled at him asking if he shot the dog, but he didn’t answer.

Though he does not have an arrest record in Palm Beach County, Barry was arrested in Broward County on charges of resisting an officer with violence and possession of marijuana in 2009.

    Stasi Enforcer Shoots Dog:

Off-duty National City police officer shoots dog in Bonita

    2:47 PM, Jun 28, 2014

BONITA, Calif. - Deputies are investigating after an off-duty National City police officer shot a dog in Bonita.

The incident occurred at about 12:19 p.m. Saturday at the Sweetwater Summit Campgrounds at 3218 Summit Meadow Rd. An off-duty officer was walking with his wife and three dogs – two of which were Chihuahuas and the other a larger dog.

A 3-year-old Great Dane broke free from her chain and went over to one of the little dogs. It is unclear if the dog bit the Chihuahua. The off-duty officer then shot the dog.

The brother-in-law of the dog's owner says the officer fired five shots.

"I thought they were blanks, but actually when she came over here and laid down, I kind of realized she got shot," said Luis Alarcon. "After he shot the first shot,

I saw the dog running back, and he continued to shoot."

The dog began to retreat back to a home but died.

Deputies say the shooting was justified.

'We endorse the idea of voluntarism; self-responsibility: Family, friends, and churches to solve problems, rather than saying that some monolithic government is going to make you take care of yourself and be a better person. It's a preposterous notion: It never worked, it never will. The government can't make you a better person; it can't make you follow good habits.' - Ron Paul 1988
