Memorial Day: Remember Brutal Deliberate Israeli Attack on USS Liberty

In 2007 the Chicago Tribune reported on the surviving crew of the USS Liberty and wrote:

"Four decades later, many of the more than two dozen Liberty survivors located and interviewed by the Tribune cannot talk about the attack without shouting or weeping..."

Former Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Navy Admiral Thomas Moorer concluded in his investigation:

''Throughout the morning, the ship sailed on, with reconnaissance repeated at approximately 30-minute intervals. At one point, an Israeli air force Noratlas Nord 2501 circled the ship and headed back towards the Sinai. "It had a big Star of David on it and it was flying just a little bit above our mast," recalled crew member Larry Weaver. "I was actually able to wave to the co-pilot. He waved back and actually smiled at me - I could see him that well. There's no question about it. They had seen the ship's markings and the American flag. They could damn near see my rank. The underway flag was definitely flying, especially when you're that close to a war zone.""

Israeli recon planes circled the ship for 6 hours on a clear morning, knowing it was an American ship and knowing it was the Liberty.. In the 3 hour attack that followed, rounds meant for tanks punched through the thin steel hull like tissue paper, and slaughtered men deep inside their living quarters.

One Israeli pilot who refused to carry out the mission was arrested upon landing, and later spoke with Congressman Pete McClosky:

"Fifteen years after the attack, an Israeli pilot approached Liberty survivors and then held extensive interviews with former Congressman Paul N. (Pete) McCloskey about his role. According to this senior Israeli lead pilot, he recognized the Liberty as American immediately, so informed his headquarters, and was told to ignore the American flag and continue his attack. He refused to do so and returned to base, where he was arrested." - Whatreallyhappened.com

Why did Israel do it? At the time, Israel was engaged in the 1967 war against Egypt. The BBC documentary Dead in the Water asserts, in its official press release, that the attack was:

"a daring ploy by Israel to fake an Egyptian attack on the American spy ship, and thereby provide America with a reason to officially enter the war against Egypt."

The plan went awry because the Liberty was supposed to sink with all hands and leave no witnesses. In short, the heroism of the crew which fought fires and damage, even while wounded, prevented the ship from sinking, and perhaps prevented WWIII. Russia had promised to defend Egypt, and reports are that LBJ was sending nuclear tipped warheads on planes to Cairo.

The USS Liberty attack, in which 32 American sailors were killed by Israeli warplanes and gunboats, which was later deemed to be an "accident" by a congressional investigation, is still arousing controversy. The survivors are still calling for a new investigation so they can get justice while they live.

On this Memorial Day, call your congressman for a new investigation. Let the surviving crew members of the USS Liberty know that they are not forgotten.

The US made a mistake and had it where they were told and agreed not to have it.
It was literally a military war zone.
And the Israelis mistook it for the enemy and blew the $#@!e out of it.

First, what does where they were have to do with being attacked deliberately, with the goal of sending it to the bottom of the sea and blaming Egypt? So that the US would attack Israel's enemies and do its dirty work for them? They all knew it was American and one Israeli pilot even refused to attack and was arrested upon landing. They flew recon all morning close enough to wave at the guys on the unmistakable intelligence ship which looked nothing like the Egyptian horse transport one-half the size. Then they attacked it for 2 full hours, rocketed it, strafed it, torpedoed it with gun boats, then machine-gunned the life boats. HOW DO YOU MACHINE GUN LIFE BOATS BY ACCIDENT?

The fact of the USS Liberty make the allegation that Mossad and American Neocons were behind 9/11 almost a slam-dunk. What was the result of 9/11? The overthrow of Saddam and the utter destruction of Iraq, which Israel considered a mortal enemy. And American Neocons had been openly writing of just such an agenda for decades.
